Re: The Tower
"Well that ain't good," mutters Madragar, backing away and gripping his crossbow tightly.
"This is some ancient work of Chaos; I've not read of anything like it. And we're most inconveniently short on the two main enemies of Chaos: sunlight and running water."
"Fire..." he murmurs. "Maybe fire..."
Madragar looks around for something flammable. If he cannot find anything, he'll light a second torch. He's loathe to use up his only light source on a gamble.

Re: Better get a bucket.
Madragar thinks he might get a few minutes of burning time out of the garments of the arrow-riddled corpse. The corpse Ruig just poured out of the barrel is naked.

Re: The Tower
"A little help, if you please, gentlemen!" Madragar says, as he hurries toward the corpse.
"Strip those clothes off him. I'll light them on fire and one of you can hurl the burning bundle onto...whatever that thing is."

Re: Better get a bucket.
Kezib jumps into action. Rushing over to the barrels, holding back his urge to vomit and his immediate disgust, he roughly rips the clothing off the corpse and drops them at Madragars feet.
"I hope you know what you are doing" Kezib says as he looks at Madragar with fleeting hope in his eyes.

Re: The Tower
Gathering what's left of the dead man's garments, and wrapping them around a crusty femur, Madragar fashions a make-shift torch and puts it to light. The fire is slow to start but soon consumes the whole bundle. With bits of cloth falling in flaming bits to the floor, Madragar tosses the torch into the creeping mass of corruption.
It is like a splash of oil hitting a hot skillet. In the area around the torch the ooze recoils as hundreds of tiny bubbles explode from the sticky mass. Jets of foul vapor shoot toward the ceiling and everyone must crouch to avoid getting a lung full of the stuff.
The torch burns its way down into the middle of the disgusting pool until it is extinguished in a sputtering cloud of black vapor. The ooze continues its slow advance...

Re: The Tower
Stepping in front of the group and holding his hammer before him, Ruig stands firmly against the creeping thing.
"Go back foul shadow! Ghurul ilduan karul! The Storm Bull's fury is upon you! Rurugarath vaygurad! Ghurul ilduan karul!"
For a moment the ooze seems to halt, quivering in the orange torchlight, but it does not last. The thing continues its inexorable advance and begins to fill the northern most part of the cave.
Retreating before the silent menace, Ruig grumbles "I'm open to suggestions."

Re: The Tower
"More fire. Fire hurt it. We may be able to drive it back or even destroy it, given time. But first, we need to make a clear path to the exit."
"We need a way to lure it toward one corner. Then we can keep it at bay with the fire while we exit up the corridor."
"Might it be attracted to one of the corpses? If we can get it to choose them over us...with our fire...we may yet survive this."

Re: The Tower
"Perhaps, we can burn the barrel stock," suggests Draxim. He runs back south, and sets about smashing the now empty barrel into tinder as best he can. Suddenly he stops "Blessings upon you Meneloss!" Beaming, he produces a flask of oil from beneath his cloak. He also takes his winter blanket out of his pack and begins tearing strips from it. "Ideas? I'm, uh, still not thinking clearly..."

Re: The Tower
Ruig rips the cloak from his shoulders and throws it at Draxim's feet.
"Leave the barrel to me," Ruig declares. Certainly his hefty warhammer is a better tool for smashing the barrels than Draxim's crude morningstar. Spitting into his hands the sturdy dwarf lays the barrel on its side and swiftly knocks the oaken slats out of the iron framework. Kicking the useless iron cage aside Ruig begins gathering the smashed planks of wood.
The slow advance of the Chaos ooze has reached the pile of dried flesh and broken bone of the recently animated corpse and pours over it without pausing. A slight hiss can be heard as the lifeless remains are dissolved under the merciless caress of the hideous slime.

Re: The Tower
Draxim has soaked strips of the blanket in oil, and is now passing them out to the others. He hastily wraps a strip around a plank creating a torch for himself and lights it from Madragar's. [Where exactly is the pudding/slime/thing and how much area is it taking up? Maybe a map?]

Re: The Tower
Holy Snit! There really isn't much of a corner to get into, is there?
Madragar grabs up anything flammable and moves as quickly as possible to the western wall.
"To me!" he shouts. "Torches and fire, that's our only chance! If we can convince this thing to slip around us, looking for an opening, we might be able to run past us once it's mostly over there," he says, pointing to his right.
The bald and tattooed mage frantically stokes the torch with Kezib's oil and waves it in front of him to keep the ooze at bay.

Re: The Tower
Draxim assists with moving the flammables and continues making and lighting torches. "If our torches will hold it back, we should push forward along the wall so that maybe we can get behind it!"
[Where is the corpse mousse? How much oil do we have left?]

Re: The Tower
The four explorers (three of them armed with their crude, sputtering torches) creep along the western wall. With flaming brand outstretched, Madragar tries to keep the quivering ooze at bay while they pass.
Initially, the massive slime pool edges away from the group. The four, nearly shoulder to shoulder, inch their way along the wall. Madragar takes cautious steps, crouching over as he blazes a trail with his torch. It is when they reach the narrow cave entrance that things go pear shaped.
The volume of black ooze flowing into the chamber still clogs much of the ascending tube. Hence, there is really nowhere for it to go and Madragar must bring his torch perilously close to the surface of the thing lest it pour over his feet. Draxim, at the back of the group, notices that the pool has completely enclosed the four explorers and has more or less formed a semi-circle around them.
Things grow desperate as each torch is used to force the retreat of some portion of the beast while it grows in strength elsewhere. And if that weren't enough, the ooze appears to be building up a particularly large bubble full of noxious vapors just a few feet away from Ruig and Kezib.

Re: The Tower
Kezib looks at the situation, and says a little prayer "Yelm, Bringer of Light, accept my sacrifice and let it serve its purpose"
Turning to Draxim, "Have you any oil left, if so, douse the end of my staff, and burn it, I will try to push the ooze back some with longer reach"

Re: The Tower
Draxim has a small amount of oil left in his flask, but it would simply roll off the end of Kezib's staff.

Re: The Tower
Draxim takes his bedroll and throws it to the ground in front of him. He then lights it on fire with his plank torch. He also feeds it with any remaining blanket strips.

Re: The Tower
Draxim hurls his ragged wool bedroll on the ground, covering part of the creeping ooze. He is a little disappointed when it doesn't burst into flames with the application of a little wood and fire. The ooze, however, seems to like the taste as the edges of the bedroll are beginning to smoulder and dissolve.

"Oil!" cries Madragar. "Pour the remaining oil on the bedroll!"
