Re: The Tower
"Well, dwarves have been known to be handy with axes," he winks at Ruig, "and I recall that the noble lady Grugni has a prime specimen on her woodpile, so after a little lunch we can start building up a good supply of fuel. Also we may be able to convince Grugni," Draxim's eye twinkles, "to let us use the stocks she may have, although transporting it up here may be a problem. Of course, we'd have to replace it," he adds hurriedly. After a bit more walking he realizes that he still has a death grip on the oil flask. He shakes it a bit and says, "I wonder where we could get some more oil as well. We'll be needing it if we're to face that beastly great pile' o muck again." He launches into a fit of loud hacking which ends in the production of the oddest colored gobber ever seen without the aid of magic.

[btw I hope that I remembered to retrieve Sangraal's rope]

Re: The Tower
Kezib looks at the group in confusion. "Is the plan to burn down the tower?"

Re: The Tower
Madragar shakes his head. "No. The creature could simply flee into the tunnels and be safe. We must bring the bonfire to it. For that, we will need several torches going, and as much lamp oil as we can scrounge."

Once we have the wood ready, we will haul it into the tunnels. If the beast is in the pit, we will start the fire at the pit's edge and collapse it in. If it is in the lower chamber, we will ring it with fire. It is slow, and we can work quickly if we are prepared."

Re: The Tower
"Hmm now that I think on it, we'll have to make sure that festering mass of greasy ooze doesn't escape into the water." He coughs again, remembering to cover his mouth this time and looks at his hand in amazement at the amount of soot covering it. "Ick," he says succinctly. "I'm as tired as a drunken sloth." he murmers.

"Well I will do what I can to aid in this endeavor"

Looking at the group, Kezib realizes that they are not as insane as he first thought.

"I thought you guys were going ot burn down this tower to kill the ooze, which would have been over kill. So, let us do what we have to do to rid this world of this taint of Chaos"

"Alright. Ruig, Draxim, why don't you two work on collecting wood? Kezib and I'll get what oil we can and come find you."

Re: The Tower
Ruig gives Draxim a knowing look... always getting the hard labor, we dwarves are, while Madragar and Kezib trudge down the hill, presumably toward Grugni's abode.

"Well lad, I guess we're to the forest. From what I've seen of Grugni's place there isn't enough wood to meet our needs. Besides, I wouldn't want to clean her out with autumn coming on."

Re: The Tower
Madragar and Kezib make their way to the house where they find both Grugni and Vala outside along the road. They have apparently set up some of Grugni's pumpkins, smashed during the broo raid, and are taking turns filling them full of crossbow bolts. Vala smiles at the pair while she reloads.

"You two seem to be in one piece, if a little dirty. How went the exploration? And where are Ruig and Draxim going?"

Re: The Tower
Madragar ignores his ragged condition and hugs Vala with some force. This is the first time he's ever really come face to face with his own mortality.

"It's not over. There is a...thing...down there and we plan to destroy it before it can escape at nightfall. The dwarves have gone to chop wood, while we have come to collect any oil and other flammables we can find."

Then, with a smile, he adds "I see those pumpkins will never trouble us again."

Re: The Tower
Vala quickly hands off the loaded crossbow to Grugni before Madragar's affections get either of them killed.

Grugni discharges the bolt into the distant melon. "I think we should pay a visit to our fishermen. They coat the bottom of their boats with some kind of pitch mixture which I believe burns well. If I know Hrun, though, he'll want to be paid for it."

Re: The Tower
[ I assume we grabbed an axe and a wheel barrow if one was available, since I mentioned it earlier.]

Draxim as he departs looks hungrily at the smashed pumpkins and single droplet of drool escapes his lips as he remembers the morning's steaming pumpkin bread. Had it been only this morning? It seemed weeks ago that the group was discussing their plan of attack. His hunger is quickly replaced by an aftershock of nausea, and he hurries after Ruig.

Re: The Tower
"I've met Hrun," says Madragar, darkly. "And I'd as soon let the old man be eaten by the beast of the tower as pay him for the means of his own salvation. Perhaps you should do the talking, Grugni."

Re: The Tower
Long story short:

Ruig and Draxim haul large amounts of deadfall out of the forest down to the tower and leave it in a pile.

Grugni and Kezib pay a visit to Hrun and his family and the dwarven hostess pays the man a modest price for a bucket of flammable pitch. She also manages to get Madragar's crossbow string back.

Everyone sits down to a hot lunch in Grugni's and, after taking a few minutes to reattach her front door, Madragar, Kezib, Ruig and Draxim return to the tower.

Continue...

Re: The Tower
"Anyone got matches or a flint and steel?" asks Draxim as he begins bundling up a huge load of firewood and hoisting it onto his back with a length of rope. As he heads inside the tower, he looks quite like an industious ant returning to the hill. Minus 2 legs.

Re: The Tower
[I was working form Madragar's earlier post:

"Once we have the wood ready, we will haul it into the tunnels. If the beast is in the pit, we will start the fire at the pit's edge and collapse it in. If it is in the lower chamber, we will ring it with fire. It is slow, and we can work quickly if we are prepared."

I had gotten to the "haul it into the tunnels" stage]

'We should be able to tell where that mass of putrid gelatin is from the stinking corrosive green cloud it sends up", says Draxim.

Re: The Tower
[Okie dokie..]

Gathering together enough of the deadfall for a good sized bonfire, and hoisting it all on your collective shoulders, you move down into the tunnel... careful to keep seperate the torch-bearers and the guy carrying the bucket of pitch.

[Madragar, your first torch is spent so you'll have to light another. Kezib still has no light source of his own.]

Moving down the entrance tunnel the group encounters that same, strange stillness in the air that muffles all sounds, though the trail of noxious vapor is no longer present. Carefully looking for signs of the slime creature you move down into the main chamber. After unloading the piles of dry wood, Draxim makes a quick scout of the lower chamber and finds nothing. The barrels and corpses are undisturbed and the creature is gone. Presumably it is back in the pit...

Re: The Tower
Draxim checks the water for signs of the beastie as well, and then [assuming it isn't in the water] starts piling up the wood at the edge of the pit to make a nice size fire. [Can pitch be used to make torches? We should all have at least one.]

Re: The Tower
"I have torches," declares Madragar.

From a distance, he can see that the slime creature is not lurking on the back wall of the pit. So, keeping his distance, he works his way around to see that it is not lurking just below the near side of the rim. Assuming it is not, he lays down and belly crawls to the rim, taking a quick peek in.

Re: The Tower
Ruig, equally curious as to what is in the dark pit, also creeps forward to peer in. The pit is about ten to fifteen feet wide and sits at the bottom of a shallow bowl in the back of the cavern. The slime trail leads directly to the odd spire of rock and then down into the pit itself.

The walls of the pit are of the same smooth, undulating stone. It looks as if it would be nearly impossible to climb. The walls extend down into the earth about twenty feet then open up into a larger chamber that extends off to the southeast. There is no sign of the beast and much of the chamber is hidden from view.
