Re: The Tower
Ruig takes a brief glance at Kezib, unarmored and armed with only a staff, and decides that the dwarves should take the lead. With the stout Ruig up front, and Draxim with his crossbow close behind, the four move down the tunnel.
The curvature of the tube is such that they must move single file down the uneven passage as it turns first to the right, then back sharply to the left continuing on in generally the same direction. Only twenty feet or so beyond the dog-leg and the tunnel widens into a smallish chamber. The cave is maybe forty feet long, twenty feet wide and runs generally north (where the tunnel emerges) to south.
At the southern end of the cave are two wooden barrels reinforced with thick iron bands. A pair of heavy iron chain crosses over the lid of the cask, holding the lid shut. On the ground, leaning up against the closest barrel, is another corpse. Two old crossbow bolts protrude from its unarmored chest.
Reaching the base of the tunnel, and looking southward, Ruig pauses and stares at the scene. A moment later and he shakes his head.
"There is something down here, but I cannot tell what it is. A presence..."
The cave turns sharply to the left out of sight beyond the two barrels.

Re: The Tower
Draxim enters the chamber slowly whipping his head left then right then up to check that no is hiding behind the door frame. He proceeds over to the corpse cautiously and alertly with his crossbow at the ready. [If he makes it to the corpse, he will glean the bolts if they are worth it.]

Re: The Tower
As Draxim reaches the corpse, barely laying the tip of a single digit on one of the protruding crossbow bolts, and Madragar begins to intone his spell, several things happen... none of which are good.
The first word that comes out of Madragar's mouth is suddenly amplified, booming around the walls of the cave like the call of a hundred mighty horns. "AZHAN!" It is a deafening blast of sound, shaking everyone's teeth in their sockets and nearly knocking Madragar over with the shock of it. His simple spell is instantly disrupted and the echoes of the incantation quickly fade away.
Draxim, nearly jumping out of his boots at the tremendous sound, loses his balance and falls forward into the lap of the crusty corpse. The dwarf instantly recoils, trying to put his hands and feet beneath him to get away from the thing as quickly as possible. Draxim regains his balance but finds himself swept completely off his feet, hanging several feet above the ground.
A cloud of inky darkness has appeared out of nowhere and is wrapped around the torso, head and limbs of the crumbling corpse. The dead creature now moves as if alive, its lifeless sockets gleaming with a sickly yellow glow. Worse still, the thing is hovering a foot or so off the ground and has Draxim by the collar. The unfortunate dwarf is being held aloft, his head only a foot or so from the roof of the cave.
Initiative: Ruig, Madragar, Draxim, Kezib, the creature...

Re: The Tower
Ruig bellows in dwarvish Guronto Turan! and charges forward. Sidestepping the dangling form of Draxim, the muscular dwarf lays into the creature with gusto. The thing swats at the incoming warhammer with its free hand, partially blocking the attack. A cloud of corpse dust rises but the thing looks generally unharmed. Certainly a normal, brittle skeleton would have been smashed to powder by such a blow.

Re: The Tower
[The map would seem to indicate that Madragar does not have a clear shot. I'll use the Theeurth rules for careful and careless shooting, but the Thing has 50% cover. It'll be one hell of a shot for a 1st level Wizard.]

Re: The Tower
"VALAASAM!" the word is shattering thunderbolt, and Madragar is knocked clean off his feet. He hits one wall of the tunnel, falls down, then rolls to the center of the tube. The wizard was half expecting this to happen, but the shock of it was still too much for him to maintain his concentration.

Draxim fires his crossbow at the thing at point blank range. He then drops the crossbow and attempts to escape its horrible grasp. He is careful not to yell.

Re: The Tower
[OOC: Kezib grabbed his armor before leaving, prepared for an event like this, even though the armor doesnt really give much]
Kezib will hug the wall to his left and will quietly move along the wall, to behind the second little bump in the wall.

Re: The Tower
Draxim frantically tries to aim his crossbow at the thing, but the crossbow fires prematurely sending the bolt uselessly against the cave wall. Kezib approaches cautiously.
Bringing the dangling dwarf close to its cadaverous face, the creature opens its dusty maw and belches out a cloud of pure darkness and terror. The wave washes over Draxim, Ruig and Kezib but stops short of Madragar. The air itself begins to frost and particles of ice crystals form on the ground and the three victims.
Ruig averts his eyes and puts his shoulder into the blast, while Kezib ducks low behind the dwarf, averting the worst of it. Draxim, however, is in no position to dodge to attack and takes the full force of it right in the face. He strains like an animal in a trap to escape the clutches of the creature. Breaking free, pale and covered in a light dusting of frost, Draxim stumbles up the tunnel and past Madragar.
Ruig steps up and again lays into the thing. His warhammer swing downward in a ferocious arc, knocking the left leg completely off the hideous beast. The thing shrieks in anger and turns on the burly dwarf, looming with its claws outstretched.

Re: The Tower
Madragar hesitates. He has no spells left, and very little protection. He cannot fire his crossbow, for fear of hitting Ruig. But he has left his staff upstairs and could do little to help the warrior without it.
Thus, he moves around to his left, keeping his crossbow aimed and waiting for an opening. If he sees a clean shot, he will take it as soon as it presents itself.

I soiled my armor I was so scared!
Draxim, wishing to accomodate Madragar's desire to get a clean shot, continues to run. And scream.

Re: The Tower
Kezib tries to move past Ruig, and flank the beast to get a good clean shot at the back. No penalties, just swinging with all Kezib has with his trusty quarterstaff.

Re: The Tower
As Kezib moves forward to engage with his staff, Madragar sees an opening and pulls the trigger of his crossbow. Although the wizard could clearly see the creature's torso and head, he neglected to actually point the crossbow at it and the bolt zips down the cave and smacks against the far wall.
Kezib makes a hard, two-handed swing with the length of oak, grateful that Draxim is not so tall... "lots of room up top," Kezib thinks to himself. "I can use the 'branch in a gale' blow." This he does, catching the hovering undead in the chest. The sound of breaking ribs is clearly heard even through the stale air, and the creature recoils from the attack.
Ruig moves in closer where his short but powerful arms have the advantage. He manages to land another crushing blow against the levitating thing, knocking its pelvis clean off its body. The monster screams in torment and tries to slide away from the murderous pair. Although lacking a lower half, the thing continues to levitate, and makes a half-hearted swing at the dwarf with its shadowy claws, but to no avail. Ruig is clearly not taking any chances.

From the next cavern, echo the cries "Run, Run for your lives! It's horrible!"
[I think you meant "grateful that Ruig is not so tall"]
