Re: Leaving
Kezib stands, stretching as he grabs his gear. The sad and hungry look of a little girl grabs Kezibs attention as he was about to take another bite from his bread. He walks over with the bread, smiles at the little girl and places the uneaten bread on her plate. Pats her on the head and goes back to the group. Grabbing his quarterstaff, it slides down in his hand so that there is a loud thud.
Smiling Kezib says "I'm ready"

Re: Leaving
With at least a tacit understanding of the task at hand, the group begins to gather their things and prepare to meet the broo warband, or at least wait for it. Sangraal gathers up the bronze disk that was given him by Hegi, while Draxim, Kezib, Meneloss and Madragar each take one of the leather bags. Tagra secures the pot of deadly oils and meets briefly with Nrulias in order to gain possession of an adequate spear and a bow. Bulh provides Tagra with one of his own bows, a beautiful composite recurve bow made of horn and sinew, as well as a dozen arrows.

Then, gathered at the bonfire circle with scores of common farm folk milling about, the group meets again with Hegi. In soft, well practiced tones she asks for the blessing of Yelm and Chalana Arroy on this endeavor. The young disciple Shala moves through the group with a small but finely carved wooden bowl full of clear liquid. She traces a circle on everyone's right hand, muttering some inaudible blessing with each gesture. Then, Hegi explains, the companions are to go forth through the Pillars of Autumn.

No one is entirely sure what that means until, with the entire village watching them, the group passes through the Werthyn gates. On each side of the gate are two young girls, their eyes closed and each holding a bough of oak. With Vala at her side, Hegi completes the simple ceremony.

"You walk from the blessings of the hearth into the darkness of Chaos, and you walk freely. That is your gift to the Light. What the Light gives to the forest let now the forest give to you. Strength of oak, my children. Praise Yelm, and praise Chalana Arroy."

These last words are repeated by the entire village as the group completes their passage through the gates, and the Pillars of Autumn. The large wooden door of the pallisade then slowly closes.

...

With Nrulias in the lead the companions march west on the packed earth road. In less than an hour the group finds a farmhouse that suits their purposes. It is a modest sized house on a slight rise above wide fields of wheat and barley. With two entrances, sturdy construction, and a thatched roof the house is quickly chosen as the most preferable of the five between Werthyn and the Lhevas farm.

Entering the place, it is clear that the farmers left in a hurry. Clothes and other possessions are strewn about, furniture is upset, and even a small fire still smoulders in a brick fireplace. The group then goes about testing shutters and doors, finding advantageous positions for attacking anyone outside, and generally getting the lay of the land.

It isn't long before a gang of sturdy farmhands approach, their arms full of building materials. Stakes, wooden beams, and even some hefty stones (the Empire used them as ballast for their ships, but the Moagari often build with them) for hurling down from the roof... as requested. One large farmer also carries a modest sized pig, recently slaughtered, for roasting in the fire and hopefully attracting the attention of the broo. After stacking the supplies the men go into the house and gather up many of the valuables left behind the night before. There still remains a heavy wooden table, a single wide bed, and several chairs but the men hussle back to Werthyn with the rest.

Outside the three Merek Lek are carefully walking the surrounding fields. Each dip and rise is noted, as well as any unseen ditches or other impediments. Some fresh leaves are gathered and Tagra, Yimris and Atan each coat the heads of three arrows with Hegi's strange mixture. Then, wrapping the arrowheads in the leaves, they insert them carefully in their quivers such that they will be the first arrows drawn. They then wrap twine around their limbs and torso in preparation for camouflaging themselves in the tall grasses.

Inside, Madragar and Meneloss upend the bed and lean it against an interior wall. The slats of the bedframe they then use as a makeshift ladder to reach the rafters. With the help of Kezib from outside they cut two holes through six inches of the thatched roof with their daggers. They aren't large openings, but allow a clear line of sight to the south, southeast and southwest. The two wizards then stack a number of the ballast stones along the rafters for hurling down on the broo if the opportunity presents itself.

A few hours have passed since the group left Werthyn, but all seems to be prepared...

Re: Leaving
The apprehension inside the house is tense. At any moment, the Broo may come, and with them ruin and death. Meneloss up in the rafters looks down at the Dwarves, Ruglan, Kezib, and Sangraal. "From up here, you seem shorter than usual Draxim. Have you been shrinking? Or perhaps I have gotten taller!" Nobody even chuckles at his silly joke. The situation is too dire for Meneloss to lighten with his bad humor. So, buying into the morbid mood of the group, he changes tack: "If I should fall tonight, I want to be burned. Leave no trace of my body for the shades. Scatter my ashes to the winds so the Orlanth may carry me home." He goes on with his dark subject matter, "Madragar, you may have my scrolls. Draxim my rope and oil are for you. To Vala one of my daggers. The other dagger is for Atan. My sword and armor, I will need when I go to join the Army of the Lightbringers and the rest of my people. My coins can go to the others."

Re: Leaving
Taking out eight arrows from his quiver Atan carefully replaces the three leaf-wrapped shafts.

"Targa, take these.", nodding towards the eight arrows on the ground. "That way you will have plenty for the fight and," breaking into a grin, "Yimris and I won't have to carry your slack."

Atans turns and looks at his heavily camoflagued friend. "Isn't that right? Humakt's oath you look like a walking haybale."

[Skutai - If possible I would still like to dig some punji pits. They are only a foot deep with half a dozen sharp spikes. Do I have any time to build some after getting camoflagued?]

Re: Leaving
[Yes. There is a shovel at the house. How far away from the house do you want to set them?]

Tagra takes the arrows and adds them to his quiver. "I doubt we'll need moren a handful. Once the broo figure out where we are... and they will, all gets hairy quick."

Final Blessing
Sangraal satisfied that all the preperations are in order. He calls all of the group to him ( and farmers). Thumbing through a small leather bound book.

" I actually found this days ago during morning prayer. It seems very approperate considering our current endevour.

Arise Yelm!
Deliver us, from the darkness!
Strike our enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth of the wicked.
Strengthen the arm as you do our resolve,
Guide the sword.
Guide the drawn bow.
Guide us Yelm, lead us on this darkening tide.

From Yelm comes deliverance.
He is the shield that covers you.
fear not the fate of the martyr;
for the righteous walk in the light."

Sangraal packs the book away and begins to arm himself.

Re: Final Blessing
Ruig chuckles as Sangraal begins checking the straps on his armor.

"'...break the teeth of the wicked.' That sounds like an Urox oath. Let us hope that today the Sun God will put aside compassion and embrace the warlike manner of his son."

The sturdy dwarf paces around the room until he finds a spot to his liking, then kneels and prays silently.

In the house
[OOC: Ruglan should guard the doorway since he has a shield. Sangraal can stand to one side of the doorway and tentpeg any broo tryingto to come through. Any chance we can get a map of the house?]

Re: In the house
[I think I said twice that I would be outside. How did I end up in the house? Oh well.]

[If you want to be outside then walk outside ya big baby. - GM]

Draxim coats some of his crossbow bolts in the broo killing mixture as well if there is any left, using the caution that the others did, and sets them at the ready. He takes a position below the front window if there is one. His morning star is loose in his belt.

"Meneloss! throw down those spikes, I have an idea." He takes the spikes and hammers them into the door jambs about a foot from the ground and then cuts a small length of rope. he fastens it tightly to the spikes as a trip wire. He makes sure that everyone knows about it including the wheat stalkers outside. He then searces about for means to do this on the back door as well. Perhaps the rope could be tied directly to the jambs? Or maybe he could use some of the furniture...

Re: In the house
[OOC: Unless Draxim is skilled at hiding like the Merek, I think it would be best for him to be in the house. We don't want to give away our trap.]

[Actually, he is. Draxim isn't quite as good at it as the Merek, but with their help he'll be well concealed. - GM]

[OOC: Then outside he should be. Could we get a map of the house? Also Sangraal sits down and starts checking out the bronze disk given to him.]

In the field
Atan heads to the house to recover the shovel. The khaki colored grain stalks covering his clothes bend and swish as he moves through the house's doorway. Looking up at Menelos and Madragar, "You guys give us a quick shout if you see them OK?"

Walking over to Sangraal and Ruig, "Hey, when you guys start casting spells do you need all of us to be within a certain distance of you to gain the benefits?"

[Skutai - I will dig at least one pit directly in front of my ambush position and camoflague it. If Yimris and Targa have time to help we can dig one for each of them as well. The more time we have the more I will prepare in the funnel pattern I mentioned before in my previous posts.

Draxim - Stay in the house. They will need the muscle with the three merek lek outside. Plus you may not be able to see over the grain stalks.]

Das Map
www.jubilex.com/moagara/ambush.gif

Each square = 5 feet.

To the north is the road that runs east to west. The house has a single interior wall with a fireplace in its center. The room to the east was the bedroom and the bed is now leaning against the interior wall, acting as a ladder to reach the rafters. The west room was a kitchen and eating area and has in it a small wooden table and several chairs. The windows are all shuttered closed. The front door is to the north, the back door is to the south. There is a low wooden fence in the backyard enclosing a simple garden.

The house is surrounded on three sides by the tall wheat field. This field extends for at least 100' to the east, south and west.

Re: Das Map
" We know from experience that the broo will act in concert and attack from as many directions as they can so we will need to cover as many of the doors and windows that we can.

If we can flip the table on its side and move it to about 5 feet from the Southern door, we could have someone use it as cover if the broo charge."

Sangraal starts moving the table, if it isn't already being used elsewhere.

"One final note - we have allot of oil, if the house falls then the Merek should set the fields ablaze. You can with any luck pin the broo in and burn them down. It will also serve as notice to the town that something is very wrong. You did say that you wanted to be cremated Meneloss." The morose statement brings a grin to Sangraals face.

[OOC: The bless spell is 60 foot radius. If we setup within that area, then I can get that bonus to everybody.]

Re: Das Map
[GM: Who has the healing berries? Which side of the doors are the hinges on?]

Draxim sets up shop at the front window, nearer to the NW corner of the house.

[Madragar, Meneloss, Draxim and Kezib each have a bag of the healing berries. Each door has hinges on the inside.]

Re: Das Map
[Skutain - Can you show the location of the farm on the large map? Not too important, but I want to get a general idea of the direction they will be coming from.]

Atan returns to the field with his shovel, "Yimris ...Targa. So where do we want to set up? In advance of the house or behind the house. "

Atan shifts his feet, rocking in pre-battle anticipation, "Behind would let us move up and shoot from the flanks once the Broo are engaged. Plus it lets us get within range of Sangraal's Blessings. The downside is that we have to move up to engage, giving them a chance to spot us."

"In front gives us the ability to pick our exact spot and time to attack in advance. The downside is that we will probably have to fall back fairly quickly to the farm."

Ruglan will help with the barricading of the house. "Many a foul creature will lose it's spirit," says Ruglan. "I would like to meet the assault from the front of the house if nobody has any objections."
