Re: Bedding down at camp
Atan laughs at Draxim's joke. "Bullcatcher, eh? It all happened so quick and fortunately I was in a position to do something. Although I think that will be a one time only trick. My neck has still got a kink in it."
When Yimris and Kildeer return Atan walks over to greet them. AFter hearing what they had found he relates his own experience, "I don't know what happened before. I thought I was fine but then I was forced to turn back. Anyways, I feel much better now thanks to Sangraal and wish to scout forward with you tonight."

Re: Bedding down at camp
"Fly, Kyethe," Madragar tells him. "Stay safe, but find out what it is."
Without thinking about it, the mage pokes Meneloss in the shoulder with his his mage hand, then lets the spell lapse. "Trouble occurs," he says succintly, standing and brushing off his trousers.
Then, loudly enough to be heard by all in the camp, he says "Something nearby has died, and my clever raven friend has detected it. I suggest all make themselves ready while he goes to scout its source."

Re: Bedding down at camp
[OOC: My money is that the carrion is where we'll find the giant. One big dead dude and one big dead wagon.]
Sangraal hurriedly arms himself, his spiked gauntlets rivets creaking as he takes up his flail.
[OOC: Sangraal is still in his armor since its still light out]

Re: Bedding down at camp
"A speaking bird?" Kezib looks at the bird with surprise. "Why am I surprised with this?" Kezib asks himself, realizing that there are many things that he doesnt understand about the world.
"Where is this carrion, can you tell how big?" Kezib asks, feeling slightly foolish holding a conversation with a bird, but doing what he can to hide it.

Dead things on the wind...
Kyethe stares down at the inquisitive monk, at Madragar, then back at Kezib.
The crow then issues a series of low squeaks and squawks in the wizard's ear... a language that only they can understand.
[Note to Madragar.]

Re: Bedding down at camp
Draxim looks at Meneloss with one eye and says, "I've no mind to be quiet when smithing or sleeping, 'twouldn't be natchral." He then glances over at Ruglan's sheild and smiles back at the scarred elf.
Startled by the speaking crow he drops his small chisel, and makes an abortive attempt at averting the evil eye, until he realizes that it is Madragar's freind that has spoken. Trying to cover his embarassment at his superstitious nature, he attempts some humor: " Great! Meneloss has a 6 foot snake in his pants and Madragar has a talking crow! What next? Ruglan's "trouser bull" actually has horns?" He sits down red-faced, recovers his chisel and turns his focus to the arguing dwarves.

Madragar mumbles something to Kyethe and the crow takes flight, gaining altitude while heading north west.

Re: Dead things on the wind...
"I don't -have- Kyethe," says Madragar with a lecturing tone. "He is a friend of mine. If anything, he has me."
"However, he tells me that we overreacted. Our minds are in tumult and make us hear dragons in every rustling of the bushes. Kyethe smells the death of 'men and half-men', and on the far flank of the mountain. He's going now to have a better look. I suppose we can stand down until he returns."
"To Kyethe, we are all 'men', by the way. But his eyes are sharp and miss little. By the tale he brings us, we may be able to learn much of what lies stinking beyond the mountain's shoulder."

Re: The smell of Dead things on the wind...
" Well I can't say that I really understand you wizard types Madragar, but if that bird of ill-omen is a freind of yours, then he's a freind of mine as well."
He continues muttering to himself, but loud enough to be heard. "Old Dad would never believe it. Imagine me being freinds with a crow and a snake, and walking a spiritual path." He shakes his head in wonder.
Draxim begins lightening his load in preparation for the evening's excursion. He will also leave his pack and take only armor, crossbow, Axe, and some rope.
[Edit: Oh and pants. Mustn't forget the pants.]

Long Story Short
The group mills about the simple campsite for the rest of the afternoon. In less than an hour Kyethe returns and explains (through Madragar who is adept at translating the crow's odd perceptions) what he saw.
There has been a battle on the western slopes of the mountain. There are many dead men there, and many more dead 'half-men'. All are naked and the good parts have been taken by a flock of very fat buzzards. The buzzards didn't bother Kyethe while he ate. Some of the bodies were burned, others (mostly men) were bloated with sickness. The buzzards wouldn't eat those. There is no sign of the giant man.
On his way to the battlefield, Kyethe noticed the entrance the mountain giant's home. He indicates that it is very big and there are more bodies there. Big stairs covered in wood, he says, but can't elaborate.
Later, the temperature drops precipitously. The wind rises and everyone is intensely thankful for the cold weather clothing loaned them by the Ghurugil. Still, with an open flame difficult to maintain in the whipping mountain wind, the group slowly moves together. Eventually, all twelve members of the expedition are huddled against the rock side by side.
After nightfall, and in the modest light of a pale half-moon, Kildeer, Draxim, Atan and Yimris move out to investigate the parallel tracks. They find many broo tracks, many mule tracks, but cannot account for the two deep ruts. The consensus is that two large poles (trees, really) were being dragged across the rocky ground at an angle. The trackers are certain, however, that all the broo, the mules and whatever made the ruts, were all travelling south away from Old Kurlew.

Re: The smell of Dead things on the wind...
Draxim shivers as he considers the possibilities for the origins of the ruts. The cold bears only some measure of responsibility for his apoplexy. "Do you suppose they could have been dragging the body away?" he whispers as he moves closer to whoever is closest along the rock face.

Time
[In case anyone is curious, it has been six days since the strange thunderous sounds emanated from Old Kurlew and, according to Tagra, was the night the battle took place. Also, it has been nine days since the battle at Grugni's House.]

Re: The smell of Dead things on the wind...
[ooc I thought it was much earlier before]
Meneloss is brooding and quiet through the night. During the second watch, he watches towards the north, towards the fortress of Old Kerlew.
When he wakes Sangraal for the third watch he has a word with the Yelm priest. "All the dead out there," He points off into the darkness, "...There are so many we can never bury them all. What are we to do? How will we show respect for the fallen, the Merek Lek, who gave thier lives fighting our Enemy? I worry for our friends Atan and Yimris, they will have friends out there. We will need your guidance tomorow Sangraal."
He then goes back to his pine branch bower and tries to sleep until morning.

Re: Time
Kezib, hearing the light whispering of the elf to Sangraal, wakes, knowing that the time is ripe for him to get up, to prepare for the rising of the sun. Kezib will wrap himself and join Sangraal in the morning rituals.

The dark is rising
Sangraal listens intently to Meneloss's concern for the dead.
" Aye. None escape Humakts Oath and that it is but a natural course of life. But I fear that the dark is rising and that baneful tide will carry many to Humakts arm."
Making the sign Lumina "Sleep Meneloss and put the cares of the dead aside for now. When Yelm arises we will see things are not so bleak. Yelm willing, we will pay back those that brought this suffering to Moagarii lands thrice fold."
Sangraal offers his bedroll for extra bedding ( not to mention residual warmth since it would be recently vacated) to Meneloss as he dons his armor.
In the east the first signs of dawn do little to break the frigid air as they chase away the star filled night.

Death
"I know not what customs the fallen may have observed in life," says Madragar, "but as we cannot bury them, perhaps we may burn them upon a common pyre."
"However, Kyethe says that many of the men were diseased. Men with fatal illnesses rarely march to battle. I believe this must have been some sorcerous malady spat up by Chaos. As such, it's virulence may have been short-lived, just enough to kill those men. But of this we cannot be certain. I think it may be wisest to leave the dead where they lay, and honor them in memory and with by our own deeds give meaning to their sacrifice."
After a time of respectful silence, he adds, "I do not believe the ruts were the dragging of Koraeus' body, at least not directly. Surely his body would make a greater impression upon the ground than his feet. But it is in my mind that such a one as the stone lord may make for an excellent prisoner and hostage. Perhaps the ruts were exactly what they seem - trees, but trees used in a might travois to pull the injured giant."

Dawn
The cold, windy night passes and the Yelmites begin their morning prayers. Everyone is sore from the uncomfortable conditions and there is much groaning and stretching before breakfast. The sky is clear but the intense mists of the Braithvale conceal them completely, and give the impression that the mountains are floating on careless grey clouds.
The flanks of Old Kurlew are silent and still.

Re: Death
As people begin to wake up and mill about.
"The raven spoke of the stairs having wood on them. Seeing how this is the only stand of trees between here and Old Kurlew, we can guess that maybe the attackers did the exact same thing we are planning on doing....build ladders, though I doubt the broo would actually take the time to build them. They would probably drag the trunks over to the stairs and lay the trunks over the stairs so they could scramble up. We'll know more when the scouts return."
[OOC: Did anybody else notice that the raven said the fat vultures did'nt bother him while he ate. Not that Madragar could stop the carrion eater from a free meal, but Madragar might want to mention to Kyethe that he should'nt feed in our presence or on humens at all.]

Re: Dawn
Before Meneloss opens his leather scroll case which houses his precious parchements, he gives thanks to Orlanth for the still air. He lays out his scrolls, and from his sleeve the tiny Angewitta emerges despite the chill. The two begin their strange ritual of decyphering the arcane text of Eol.
After a scant 15 minutes, he is finished.
He munches some dried fruits and a handfull of nuts. He ties his hair back into a single pony tail and dons his fur hat. He wears his scroll case slung above his pack, so that in an emergency, he can ditch his pack yet keep the priceless scrolls.
Meneloss is ready to cross the barren ground to Old Kerlew
