B1: In Search of the Unknown
The smaller, man-sized stairway is a little over ten feet wide and runs along the right/eastern wall as the giant steps descend to the north. The opposite wall of the vast tunnel follows a parallel course about thirty feet to the west. The walls themselves are smoothly carved from the naked stone of the mountain.
The stairs descend into darkness, and the temperature drops along with them. Soon the group's frosty breaths are floating upward in the flickering torchlight. Finally, after nearly ten minutes of slow descent, the travellers reach the bottom. Ruig and Draxim agree that the group is around five hundred feet below the surface.
The tunnel opens into a much larger chamber that the feeble lantern light cannot hope to fully illuminate. About fifty feet to the east and west stand vast stone walls that rise up into darkness, supported by half-circle columns that protrude from the stonework every twenty feet or so. Stepping cautiously into the dark, silent chamber the elves and dwarves detect an open archway about sixty feet along the eastern wall, and a wide pool of water about the same distance along the western wall. The northern expanse of the chamber, and the high vaulted ceiling, remain hidden from view, veiled in deep darkness.

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
[There were two sets of stairs running side by side. One was for the giant, one was (presumably) for his guests and could be easily traversed by man-sized creatures. There was no obvious sign that the broo had gone down the stairs.]

Port side stick
Atan motions to Ruglan to move left and slide along the eastern wall, "Lets move up to the archway opposite the pool."
Once the party reaches the arch Atan will motion for the party to stop for a minute so they can listen for anything unusual.
[OOC: For those who don't know I got told on Monday I would be going to Kuwait this Sunday. Good news today though, I have just been told I won't be going after all. I was looking forward to it, but Christian will be much happier]

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
[The archway is to the right, actually.]
Single file, the group slides along the eastern wall trying to remain quiet. The intermittent columns are made of enormous half-cylinder slabs of deep orange marble shot through with streaks of white. They are set into depressions in the chamber wall and rise up out of sight.
Reaching the southeastern corner of the massive hall, Atan and Ruglan lead the group north another fifty feet to a thirty foot wide archway. Peering around a corner, Atan can see that the archway leads to a short hallway (though it is hard to call it such, being thirty feet wide and around sixty long) where a second arch gives access to another large chamber.
Atan raises his hand for silence and everyone listens for sounds out in the dark. The elves shake their head... nothing. But Ruig pipes in, "wait." The dwarf gets down on all fours and puts his head to the cold stone floor. A long minute passes and he says, "digging... I hear digging far away. Pick axe on stone."

[ooc: Halle I t makes me happier too!]
Meneloss whispers to Madragar "Does any of this come back to you? The pool do you remember it?" He also looks on the walls for gigantic sconces. "How did Koreaus light his hall?" Meneloss wonders aloud for the party to hear

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
Madragar scratches his head.
"Yes, I believe so. We ate in this chamber, though it was well lit by sorcerous flame. Koraeus, I surmised, could see plainly in the dark but had illuminated his hall for the benefit of Edrigan and myself."
The tatooed wizard peers off into the dark, trying to reconstruct old memories.
"The pool, yes, there... it was at the base of a great statue. We held our feast at a table at the northern end of this room, and the guest chambers are through this archway. That is, if my memory has not failed me altogether."

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
Meneloss looks as if he enters a brief trance and he monotones
"Between two archways, beside the feast hall, look for it there, to the west."
"Those were Boahur's words. Remember good folk? He told us of a secret room near the dining hall, on the way to the guest chambers. Let's find this room. If we need to get back to it in an emergency, it will be best if we have already found it."
The elf immediately begins searching (+5) for the secret door on the western wall. Continuing through the arches towards the guest rooms but alwas on the western wall.

[Good job Sean J. I had totally forgotten.]
"Ruig, could you guide us to those mining? There surely lies our quarry." While Meneloss searchs for a secret door, Atan will keep vigilent watch.

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
Meneloss begins his search, though since the hallway between the two arches extends east to west there is no western wall to search. Perhaps Boahur was mistaken...
Ruig shakes his head. "No, Atan, the mining could be in any direction. I can hear it very faintly, echoing through the roots of the mountain."
Draxim and Ruig lend their senses to the search for the door and almost simultaneously the dwarves spot a narrow seam in the stonework. There are two seams, actually, on the northern wall of the corridor, each about twenty feet apart. Ruig puts his ear against it and insists that it is only a few feet thick, but there is no obvious way of opening the door.

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
[what are the chances of a rough map showing where we have come from and where we are?]
Meneloss scratches his head. "I could have sworn Boahur said 'look for it to the West'." He says to the dwarves feeling a little sheepish at not finding the doorway. "I am humbled by your skills at stonework once again." He says with a slight bow towards Ruig and Draxim. "Now then.." he continues "...the first part done, we must complete the second and find a way to open these doors."
Looking up, Meneloss imagines himself a giant and searches for a potrusion which Koreaus might have pulled or pushed.

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
[Nice catch Joyner!]
Sangraal steps back giving the dwarves ample space to work. Holding his flail like a torch he unslings his pack and removes the small bronze disk given to his back in Weythyn.
Secureing the disk to his belt with a leather thong so he can get to it quickly, Sangraal takes up postion watching for any skulkers who mean to suprise the party while they are preoccupied seaching for the secret door.
" They'll only find Yelms fire, Urox's fury and Humakts arm."
Sangraal growls.

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
[Here is a very rough map, not to scale.]
Meneloss holds his torch high as he searches along the upper reaches of the wall for some sort of mechanism. Nothing obvious presents itself, but he does see a slight discoloration in the stonework about twenty feet up the wall, just to the right of the door. It has the look of stone that has been touched many times.

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
Seeing the cluster of people interested in the newly found, but as of yet impassable secret door, Atan whispers, "OK. Yimris, Madragar and Sangraal, cover the western arch. Ruglan, Kazib and I will move down to the eastern end of the hall. Meneloss and the dwarves can keep searching for a way to open this thing." Atan looks over the party to make sure each group has got a light source. Satisfied he moves forward down the hall.
[OOC: I figure this search may take time so covering all the approaches seems to be a good idea.]

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
"Up there" Meneloss points out the stone above the doorway. "I think that is the mechanism. Now to get up there."
[Are the walls smooth or rough?]
"Kezib, Draxim, do either of you think you can climb up there and press that stone?" Meneloss thinks for a moment and looking despondant says "Koreaus was incredibly strong, I am not sure either of you two would have the strength to push the stone if you could even get there."
"If this is the dining hall, then there will maybe be chairs, tables or remnants. If there is enough wood we could make a stack which would provide better leverage on the stone. But the simplest solution would be to try the stone first. I'll wager an ale that Draxim can do it. Any takers?"

Re: B1: In Search of the Unknown
The walls of the hallway are incredibly smooth, and without any joints between the stones even an expert climber would have difficulty making the ascent.
To the east, where Ruglan, Kezib and Atan are covering the archway, the trio can see a smaller chamber (only fifty feet on a side) that is full of tables, chairs of various sizes, all suitable for small creatures such as themselves. It seems that this is indeed the guest quarters. Two corridors disappear into darkness on the opposite side of the chamber.
Sadly, all of the furniture in this room has been irrevocably smashed to flinders. It would make a good bonfire, but poor climbing material.
