Re: The stairs...
The air is cold and a little damp, as you'd expect being deep underground, but has no odor that Sangraal can detect.

Ruig sniffs the air as well and looks around the ledge.

"The air is from deep in the roots of the mountain," the dwarf grumbles through his bushy beard. "There could be miles of caverns down there, so if there is another entrance it could be far away." He shrugs. Then, looking at Draxim for confirmation, he says "we're about six hundred feet below the surface now, and clearly the mountain giant dug deep."

Anybody smell a wet dog?
Atan involuntarily shivers from the breeze chilling his now perspiration soaked shirt. "Hold up for a moment. I think the temperture has leveled off in here and this heavy winter gear is too damn hot." Unslinging his quiver first, followed by his back pack, Atan finally removes his heavy woolen cloak and the mits tucked in his belt. Folding the cloak into a tight bundle, he stuffs it into his backpack along with the mits, and cinchs the strap tight. With a light coat to ward the chill, he reshoulders his pack and quiver. Picking up his bow, "Ready".

[Ahhhhh, I see now. To the left and in front, nothing but ledge and chasm. If we turn right, ledge turns to the south. Correct? ]

Re: Anybody smell a wet dog?
[The ledge turns to the east, actually. The stairway you just descended runs north to south.]

Re: Anybody smell a wet dog?
The dwarf puts his ear to the stone floor for a minute, then rises and shakes his head.

"It's stopped, or this chasm is between us and the miners."

"Would you want to check the other side? To verify, cuz if it is not on the other side, maybe somehow we have been discovered."

Re: Anybody smell a wet dog?
Meneloss looks at Kezib with a puzzled expression.
"I am not sure I understand your meaning Kezib. I doubt that we have been discovered, though it is a possibility. Crossing the chasm will not be easy. I'll wager an ale that Koreaus simply stepped across. We are not so tall, so that is not an option. Let's explore this side of the chasm first."

Meneloss follows Atan's example. He unbuckes his leather armor and removes his sheepskin vest. He bundles these things together and places them in his pack. He then buckles back on his armor and adds "I'm ready"

Re: Anybody smell a flying monk?
"Here Ruglan give me a hand and let's pitch Kezib across this possibly bottomless chasm. I think between the two of us we can probably throw him 20 feet, don't you?" he winks at Ruglan and gives the monk a playful punch in the arm (which the agile monk dodges easily of course).
"I think we probably made enough noise to alert our digger, if he is as perceptive as Ruig. We'd best be on our guard." He checks his crossbow to make sure it is strung, but no bolt is present in the carriage. Instead he holds a bolt with the same hand as the torch.
"That ledge looks wide enough to drive a mule team down."
He too, strips the heavy outerwear and stows it with his pack, relying on his armor to keep him warm in the consistent temperature of the cave.
"Would you like me to scout ahead or coninue playing mule?" he indicates the heavy pack on his back with spikes torches bedroll, parka, winter blanket, water, oil, and rope (about 70' now by my reckoning) etc.

Re: Anybody smell a wet dog?
Sangraal removes his pack and places it in front of him. Carefully resting his flail on the pack Sangraal orginizes his winter gear into a bundle before shoving it back into the backpack.

"Must be a way to get over to the other ledge. I'm as nimble as thunder is subtle, so I defer to those more fleet of foot if a way is to be traversed."

With that said Sangraal goes over to the western edge and holds his torch out as he inspects on the ledge and the wall.

Re: Anybody smell a flying monk?
Sangraal can see that the ledge itself is simply a rocky outcropping of the chasm wall that has been carved flat, presumably by Koraeus. The wall is sheer and extends up and down out of sight.

The twenty feet of open air between the ledge on which the group is standing and the one to the north appears to be impassible. To attempt to leap across would be suicide, even for the nimble Kezib. Of course, a giant the size of Koraeus could probably step right over it.

Re: Anybody smell a wet dog?
Meneloss points to the east where the ledge continues and says "I think it makes more sense explore this side of the ledge first." He holds his torch aloft and moves east into the gloom about 40 feet or so for a brief reconnoiter.

A monk once bit my sister...
Meneloss slides along the ledge to the east, illuminating the way with his torch. About thirty feet from where the group is loitering he comes across an area covered by tiny bits of cut stone. Investigating further Meneloss finds two enormous tools: a cylindrical mallet and a flat iron chisel, each more than seven feet long. A wide swathe of the southern wall is covered in what appears to be a bas relief cut into the naked stone of the mountain. The elf raises his torch and inspects the figures, but they are crude and clearly unfinished. Several humanoid forms can be seen but who they are and what they are doing is unclear.

The ledge continues to the east.

Big Honking Tools....that chisel and mallet are large too
Atan looks at the crude artistry as eeiry shadows cast by the torch light flicker on the wall's face. "Strange. I had not heard Koreus was an artist. Lets keep moving east and see if we can find another way to the other side of the chasm."

Re: Anybody smell a wet dog?
Hearing the party moving out to the east Sangraal falls back in line. Sangraal inspects the crude stonework as he passes by. Then stops to look at the massive tools laying on the ground before moving on.

" A seven foot hammer would mean this giant was a little over 40 feet tall."

Draxim examines the carvings more closely after catching up with Meneloss. He drags Ruig in for a consultation. "how recent would you say since these carvings were made?"

Re: Anybody smell a wet dog?
Neither Ruig nor Draxim can discern the age of the granite shards.

[That would require the use of the Track feat using Underground Lore.]

Moving on from the carvings, the ledge continues until it meets the eastern wall of the chasm, rising abruptly in the flickering torchlight. The ledge plunges into the rock of the mountain, maintaining its course due east. The tunnel is as wide as the ledge itself (about 30 feet) and perhaps fifty feet high.

The tunnel is cold and quiet as the group makes their way through the darkness, only the echoes of their own movement breaking the deep silence of the mountain. After several hundred feet the tunnel turns sharply north.

[At this point Meneloss' torch burns out and he must light another.]

Another hundred feet or so along the tunnel and the group reaches a dead end. There are a few sighs of disappointment, and Atan begins to creep forward to investigate the blank stone wall, when a slight scraping is heard. Everyone falls silent, listening.

Atan and Yimris slowly slide their packs to the ground and move cautiously and (hopefully) silently up to the wall before them. Atan turns back to the group after a few seconds and makes two gestures. One, his fist rubbing side to side against his palm: a scraping sound. Two, four fingers of one hand raising and lowering against his thumb: talking.

Re: Anybody smell a wet dog?
Meneloss scans the walls of the tunnel above him. He is looking for a mechanism similar to the one from up the stairs. (search +5) keeping as quiet as possible while he is searching (Move Silently +5).

Re: Anybody smell a wet dog?
Meneloss doesn't notice any opening mechansim, but getting closer to the door with his torch he can't help but notice the enormous iron pull ring set in the stone above him. This door apparently opens outward, away from where the group is standing. If it's anything like the door at the top of the last staircase it can be pushed open fairly easily.

Meneloss too can hear the sounds of conversation on the other side of the stone door. There is also an occasional scraping, perhaps some kind of wood or metal tool against stone.
