Re: Bedding Down
[No! You all wake up dead. I win!]
The night passes quietly, and not nearly as cold as many feared. The chill autumn winds often blow in from the northwest and the mountains block the worst of it. Sangraal and Kezib are awake before dawn, and the rise of Yelm above the grey horizon is a dazzling spectacle.

Early to rise
Atan wakes just before dawn after a cozy night sleep, glad to see it was not as cold as he feared it might be. As the Yelm worshipers begin their prayers, he begins repacking his bedroll and blanket. "No sense sitting on this cold rock longer then we must.", he says to himself. In minutes his backpack is ready to go. Picking up his weapons he walks past the prostrated Sangraal, "I'll be back in a little while."

Rise and Shine!
The chill morning air is appearent with each breath and Sangraal gives thanks to Urox for the kindness of his followers as he pulls his thick wool cloak around him.
As the intial rays of the dawn break over the horizon Sangraal makes the sign Lumina and kneels in genuflection. The suns rays warming the skin as the sun climbs higher. The prayer of FirstLight is performed, Yelm is revered and suplications are offered. The sight is wonderful to behold, Yelm rising majesticly into the sky, a vision not soon to be forgotten by Sangraal.
Sangraal completes his morning prayer as Atan prepares to scout out the surrounding area. Returning to his bedroll he fishes through his pack to see if he had saved any other fruit and is cheered to find a large green apple that had escaped his earlier predations.
He taps his waterskin to see if it froze solid and seeing that it did not, takes a swig.
"Another day of travel till we reach old Kurlew?" he asks the guide Killdeer.
Upon finishing his breakfeast he reassambles his pack folding the winterblanket and bedroll before tieing it to the top of his pack. Sangraal then begins to figit with his flail, first securing the head loosely with a bit of leather cord, then he tries to attach it to his pack. This fails horribly several times before he gives up and resigns himself to lugging it again upon his shoulder.

Re: Rise and Shine!
Sangraal is just finishing up his morning rites when Atan comes back into camp. "Good morning.", he says to the two sun worshipers. Using his back pack as a seat, he flops down and braces his back against the mountain. Reaching into a pocket on his backpack he pulls out chunk of bread from his loaf and some cheese he got in Ravensgate.

[OOC: I picture morning prayer to be about 5 minutes max. Just to let you know. How far out did Atan scout?]

Book keeping
[
1. Please mark off two meals for yesterday and one for this morning.
2. Because I am both busy and lazy, I need everyone to give me their total Climb skill taking into account their armor and encumberance penalties. Note that you subtract your armor check penalty, or your encumberance penalty, whichever is higher.

Watches
Yimris wanders over to Atan to talk quickly before he crashes.
"Perhaps we should split ourselves up on watches. We are probably the most experienced in the wilderness, and being what we are, probably the ones most likely to notice if something is wrong."

Re: Is'nt there an elevator?
Meneloss gathers his posessions. He digs into his pack for a handfull of dried fruits and nuts. He supplements that with a slice of salty delicious porkbread. "The crunchy parts are the best!" he exclaims before swiging some cold clear water from his waterskin. As he buckled his armor over the warm clothes he nearly throws the whole suit over the cliff. "This stuff is so heavy with all of these extras I am carrying. But, It is good to have a thick hide between you and a Broo blade." With that said, he finishes buckling his armor and stretches out his morning aches.
Looking over at Yimris who just now laid down, Meneloss says "Rise and Shine little star. It is time to go."

Re: Climb check
Hearing Meneloss's complaints about the weight of the armor, Kezib pipes up "It is better to not be where the broo blade is, my elven friend, that way, you are prone for easier attacks, while the broo are less able to defend." he says with a wry smile, playfully taunting the scared elf.

Re: Climb check
[It is scarred not scared. Meneloss is not afraid of much]
Meneloss acknowledges Kezibs barb with a grunt "Mmm. True it is best to not be where the Broo blade is to strike. Though for all of our best efforts, the blade strikes true from time to time. As I said before, a stout bit of hide betwixt you and your hide may spell the difference between life and death."

Cliffs... falling... dying...
The group sets out again with Kildeer in the lead, the bright morning sun lighting their way up the twisting paths of the rocky cliffs. Much of the ascent is made by scrambling up steeply angled granite slopes and crevasses on all fours. While this becomes hot and exhausting work, it isn't very dangerous. Indeed, many of the climbers are overly cautious in scaling the rock wall and a whispered "don't look down... don't look down" is often heard.
Less than an hour later the expedition reaches what Kildeer describes as the first tier. It is, essentially, an enormous ledge that runs along the cliffs for miles to the north and south. It is choked with vegetation and scattered boulders, but Kildeer locates one of several goat trails and soon the group is moving again. To the east the view is even more breathtaking than on the ledge where the travellers took their rest. With the Braithvale now hundreds of feet below them, Raven's Gate is clearly visible beyond as a gray blur trailing smoke southward in the morning breeze. The river snakes its way through the hills to the north and south of the town, and the keen eyed elves even notice a spot where both forest and river seem obscured by smokey mist: Hyrgalas.
The weather remains fair though a wall of clouds hangs ominously on the southern horizon. Kildeer can be seen stopping occasionally to cast his gaze in that direction. Yimris and Atan agree that they are rain clouds, but don't seem to be getting any closer.
About a quarter of a mile from the first set of ramparts the expedition reaches the second wall and begins to climb. While the ascent is usually no more dangerous than before, twice Kildeer orders a halt while he scales a particularly steep part of the trail. Securing two ropes to a rock the climbers must scramble up, inching their way hand over hand on the tightly braided rope.
[Climbing up a rope with a wall to brace against is DC 5, and a fall occurs only when that roll is missed by 5. So, this is only a problem for anyone with a negative modified climb skill, though both Sangraal and Meneloss can mitigate this by sending their packs up seperately. Ruglan, however, is simply wearing very heavy armor.]
The first climb is made without incident, and the group takes a brief rest. Moving on from that obstacle the expedition pushes through a series of connected ledges overgrown with vegetation. Kildeer encourages them all to keep moving. "Not far now," he says. "The next tier is only a little farther."
The group is led into a deep and intimidating fissure, the walls of which are only a few feet apart. The spry dwarf spits on his hands and begins to climb, putting his back against one wall and his feet against the other. Bit by bit and foot by foot, Kildeer works his way up the fissure to the sunlight drenched expanse sixty feet above.
Ropes are thrown down and one by one the climb is made. That is, until Ruglan makes his ascent. With Sangraal, Madragar, Kezib and Atan looking on from below, the town watchman huffs and puffs his way up the rope. About twenty feet from the top he stops, Ruglan's legs visibly shaking. Seconds later he begins to slide, the scales of his armor proving unable to maintain their grip on the wall behind him. Ruglan pulls the rope tight to his chest and tries to wrap his legs around it.
In a single, extremely long second, Ruglan's grip fails and he falls. His (fortunately) armored head bounces off one wall of the fissure, and his left foot becomes entangled in the climbing rope. Silently, Ruglan hurtles toward the ground head first, one foot wrapped around the braided line.
Sangraal and Atan (the only ones in a position to do anything) rush in to break his fall and take the full force of the plummeting warrior, knocking them to the ground. Ruglan hits the merciless stone on his right shoulder, twists sideways, then lays flat on his face unconscious.

Re: Is'nt there an elevator?
Extricating himself from the tangle of legs and arms, Sangraal moves Kezib out of the small confines of the stone fissure.
"Back up, let us get some room. Atan are you ok?" He asks even as he takes knee at Ruglans side.
Stashing his wool mittens Sangraal carefully removes Ruglans helm. The left side of Ruglans face already darkening into a multi-hued bruise of greens, yellows and blacks.
Ignoring his own scapes Sangraal begins the Orison Convalesce. A hymn invoking Yelm to ease the suffering and restore the body, it is a soft chant that is soothing yet strange to here rolling from the tongue of the heavily armed warrior-priest .

Re: Cliffs... falling... dying...
Atan is leaning against one of the dark granite walls rubbing his head. He apparently took one of Ruglan's boots on the cranium and is a little dazed.
Sangraal's prayer briefly lights up the fissure, passing the healing power of Yelm into the fallen Ruglan. The blessing is strong and Ruglan, while not regaining consciousness, does seem considerably less puffy and blue.
