Re: Cliffs... falling... dying...
[Will Sangraal leave the unconscious Ruglan and the dazed Atan at the bottom of the fissure? With Ruig and Harek already at the top he is the only one that can heal them.]

How not to repel down a cliff.
[OOC: I merely stated what Sangraal would do when it was his turn to go up, to make sure what happended to Ruglan does not happen to him (Poor crumpled Ruglan). Right now Sangraals place is at the bottom of the fissure to help any who fall.]

Again beseeching Yelm, Sangraal chants the Orison Convalesce.

Re: Cliffs... falling... dying...
Again beseeching the compassionate sun god to heal his broken companion, Sangraal's hands glow with supernatural light, realigning Ruglan's scrambled neurosynaptic connections. The young man blinks, rubs his head, then sits up. Not surprisingly Ruglan has no memory of his fall.

Atan regains his senses independant of divine intervention and stands, though is still leaning heavily against the crevasse wall.

Ruglan shakes his head, feeling somewhat disoriented. "What just happened?"

Re: Cliffs... falling... dying...
Atan rubs his jaw, his face red where Ruglan's boot crushed into his face. Using his hands to move slightly around Sangraal he looks upwards to the rest of the party, "Good lord, I think Urox the bull fell on me."

[Both Ruglan and Atan have gotten over the initial shock, are lightly injured, and can continue the journey.]

Yimris yells down the cliff, "Do you think we should haul him up? It wouldn't be too hard to make a rope sling and pull Ruglan "The Bull" up the cliff, though it might take all of us. ; )"

"I think if we just remove our armor, pack and weapons we can haul them up seperately." Sangraal utters back up to Yimris.

Re: Old Kurlew
Madragar simply stays out of the way while Ruglan and Atan have their marbles regathered. When it is his turn to ascend, the lightly-encumbered mage does so with much unathletic sweating and cursing, but aided by his newly acquired crampons, he should make short work of the climb.

When Kezib starts his climb, he will say a quick prayer to Yelm for safety. Looking up to Yimris, Kezib calls out "Catch!" and tosses his quarterstaff up to Yimris, hoping he is able to catch it with no problems. Once the staff is safely up on the ledge, Kezib will climb the wall.

Re: Cliffs... falling... dying...
[what is at the top of the cliff?]

Meneloss hears all the commotion of Ruglan's fall and walks over to the ledge. (Having grown up in the mountains, he is not afraid of heights) He peers down the sixty-odd feet of the crevasse and sees the crumpled form below followed by waves of warm glowing sunlight. "Yelm is indeed with us or Ruglan would be food for the worms!" Up top with Draxim the Crafty Meneloss urges his companion to make some rope sling so that the heavy armor of Ruglan and Sangraal can be more easily lifted up.
He volunteers his length of rope to be added to Draxim's so that the things may be hauled up easier.

[GM note: Indeed, if Meneloss sheds his pack his climb modifier goes to +1. Meneloss will always shed his pack before a climb like the last one!]

Re: Cliffs... falling... dying...
Draxim splices his 40' and 50' rope together [Use rope +4] and sends it down to the group below. After hauling up the first bunch of stuff, he will examine the knots to make sure that those below can tie knots properly. If knot, he will shed his gear and go back down the rope to help, amidst many curses and admonishments about how to use a *(&%^ rope. Only after he is satisfied that the rope is being used properly will he permit the injured warriors to attempt the ascent. (This will also give them more time to recuperate.) From now on, if there is any risk, Draxim will insist on taking the slow way. (Take your stuff off and haul it up.) Also, if we have enough rope, we will do belays. (Safety Ropes)

"We can't risk another fall like that! Yelm's light alone saved you that time Ruglan. And the strength of the Storm Bull." he indicates the big warrior's sheild and smiles at him relieved.

[Lightly encumbered, Draxim's climb roll is +3]

Re: Old Kurlew
[Kezib would have to be mighty indeed to hurl his staff sixty feet straight up. After failing the throw several times he decides to simply strap it to his back.]

It is a tedious process, but in time everyone's packs and armor are hauled to the top of the fissure, followed by Ruglan, Atan, Madragar and finally Sangraal. It is a short climb from the lip of the crevasse to the second tier, a ledge several hundred feet wide that clings to the rocky cliffs to the west. There the group rests.

The view from the ledge is dizzying. The trees of the Braithvale far below are nothing but a greenish blur, and distant Raven's Gate remains a smudge of grey in the afternoon sun. To the distant north the sea is barely visible as well as the vast black expanse that is the Forest of Ulm to the east. The south is lost in a series of mountain ranges, thick with pines.

Re: Old Kurlew
Meneloss asks Killdeer "How much farther is it until we reach the fortress?" The elf looks about for sturdy saplings which could be made into a ladder. He munches on nuts and dried fruits while sipping his water. His search for ladder-wood is frequently distracted by the incredible view. He strains his eyes to spot Werthyn or Tunlura.

"One more climb," Kildeer replies. "We'll make it before dusk."

Re: Cliffs... falling... dying...
After a brief lunch in the whipping wind on the ledge the expedition continues. The final set of cliffs are the most daunting of all and at first glance there appears to be no easy way to scale them. Kildeer leads the group south along the ledge for a quarter mile or so then follows the perimeter of a particularly large slab of granite (maybe three hundred feet high and as much around). At an angle between this massive stone and the sheer cliff face the path-wise dwarf begins to climb. Soon Kildeer is out of sight, in a depression of the rock. The sounds of hammering are heard (pitons most likely) and moments later a length of rope is hurled down from above.

Again the process is slow and cumbersome. The dwarves are the first to make the climb, then haul up a few packs or suits of armor. A few more travellers inch their way up the rock, followed by more packs and armor. At last the whole group is leaning against the back of the massive boulder gazing up at the towering cliffs.

Over the boulder and along a narrow ledge, Kildeer leads the way.

[I considered having everyone make Balance checks, but my sadism has its limits.]

The ledge is only two feet wide and everyone gets very well acquainted with the cliff face as they cautiously make their way along it, their faces against the rock. Finally the group reaches the top of a wide escarpment and the going is much easier. There are plenty of small bushes and rough stone to offer leverage and the slope, though remaining difficult, is no longer dangerous.

It is the middle of the afternoon when the group finally reaches the top of the cliffs and find themselves in a swath of short pine trees. Above the trees, maybe two miles to the west, are the bare granite ramparts of the mountain peak, and to the northwest the lonely spire of Old Kurlew.

What a view
Shifting the wieght of his flail from one shoulder to the other Sangraal concurs with Draxims assesment of the view.

Inhaling the fresh mountain air Sangraal asks Killdeer and the group.

" Is there another stand of trees between here and Old Kurlew inwhich we can take shelter at night? I ask this because the sun has passed midday and I think it would be wise to take shelter if none is avilable from here to the sphire.Plus we could gather the wood here to make the ladders."

Re: Old Kurlew
Kildeer peers through the trees at the surrounding terrain.

"No, Sangraal, this copse is the only shelter close to Old Kurlew." The sweaty dwarf points off toward the mountain as he talks. "A hundred feet or so that way and it's nothing but rock and scrub grass all the way up."
