Atan, Sangraal, Ruig, Meneloss, Ruglan and Kezib are on the second step. Draxim, Madragar and the dwarf are at the bottom of the stairs. The legionnaire is on the fourth step, and his ladder has been pulled down to the third step.

"Kezib is right." Draxim takes out his battle axe, and with one mighty swing, decapitates the helpless, unarmed, ancient dwarf. april fools.
Draxim actually says, "It sounds like the monk has lost patience with your silence old one. Perhaps you'd like to tell me where that stair leads, so that I will have something to prevent him from ripping out your heart when he gets back? He's a bit of a fanatic." He points the crossbow at the old dwarf's genitals for emphasis.

The old dwarf grows red with anger, his fists clenched.
"Ignorant, puss-swilling, filthy barbarian slave! You cannot frighten me! I see the fear in your eyes. Your pathetic expedition has blundered into this place without the slightest notion of what awaits you. Your only hope of survival is me, alive."
The dwarf's anger is eased for a moment, and his tone becomes almost conversational.
"You have heard the digging, haven't you? Any dwarf with ears to hear must have listened, wondering, yes? Listen again, boy. Those tones have stopped."
With a smug smile the dwarf crosses his arms.
"Now, what could have made those sounds? And if they are not digging, then what could they be doing, eh? Care to hazard a guess boy?"

[I haven't seen a recent map, so I don't know if Madragar is alone at the bottom of the stairs.]
If so... He collects his crossbow and goes to stand with Draxim.
If not, or if there is someone on the riser immediately above...he asks for a boost up so he can deal with his animated rope.
(or if there is a ladder, of course).

Ruglan gets tired of waiting for his companions to associate ladders with ascending to the 4th step so as to confront the legionaire. "Let's go people!" he says and moves the ladder to climb the 3rd riser.

2 Ladders
Sangraal ascends the ladder to the third riser and grabs hold of the legionares ladder. He then drags it over to the south end of the riser ( still laying flat on the riser) and stands on it. Holding up his flail he prepares to defend himself should the Legionaare show himself.
"The ladder is secure" he confirms for those below " When we are all ready we can rush up both ladders to swamp him if he gets free."
Spells up:
Sanctuary: will save to attack cleric, if failed than attack is aborted and lost.
Bless 3 rounds +1 to hit, +1 fear saves
Light: 10 minutes illumination as a torch

Meneloss nimbly climbs up the ladder to the third tier. He motions for Sangraal to step off the second ladder and quickly places it against the 'wall' and climbs up onto the fourth riser.
"Let's get him while he is still tied up!" exclaims Meneloss as he clambers up the second ladder.

Madragar turns to the dwarf, crossbow in hand, but aimed at the ground.
"Alright. I told you that if you gave us no reason, we would not harm you. That remains true. So why not tell us what you know of the digging and diggers?"
"Draxim, why don't you lower your weapon?"

With one ladder leading from the second step to the third, and one from the third step to the fourth, Meneloss recklessly hoists himself up over the ledge.
There he finds the legionnaire waiting for him, Madragar's rope in a lifeless pile at his feet. The soldier is in a defensive crouch, the gleaming edge of his thrusting sword just barely visible behind the rim of his oval shield.

Ruglan moves the party's ladder 15' away from the ladder already in place on the third step and climbs up to the fourth step.

Atan moves up the ladder directly behind Meneloss. Cresting the fourth riser he steps out next the elven mage. Drawing his sword he holds out in front of him with both hands. "Surrender. You are out numbered and cornered. Your death here will serve nothing."

Atan climbs the step to join Meneloss, but the legionnaire makes no reply.
Ruglan, after climbing to the third step, moves the ladder south along the riser and begins to ascend. The young watchmen notices the legionnaire turn his attention to him as he climbs. Just as Ruglan is about to put one foot on the lip of the step the legionnaire lashes out at him in a blur of motion. The blade slashes past Ruglan's shield and drives into the meat of his right shoulder. Ruglan recoils in pain and, worse still, loses his balance and tumbles backward, taking the ladder with him. Both ladder and man crash into the third step, Ruglan gasping for breath, his sword hitting the flagstones with a clang.

Kezib quickly rushes to Ruglans side to check if he is alive.
Kezib, once assured that Ruglan is alive, will quickly go up the ladder that hasnt been spilled.
