Re: 2 Ladders
[First Kezib will have to scale the first ladder. Easy enough. Then checking Ruglan he can then use the second ladder to get to the fourth step. Is that what you want to do?]

Re: 2 Ladders
Draxim steps back from the stairs 20 feet to see if he can get a bead on the legionairre without endangering his freinds. If he can he fires. As he is stepping back, he replies over his crossbow to the elder dwarf who seems bent on instruction. "Perhaps they are undigging? Filling something in? Or perhaps they are undermining?"

Re: 2 Ladders
[Well... ok...]
Ruglan is clearly still alive. The wound in his shoulder is discharging a healthy amount of steaming blood onto the stone steps and he's had the wind knocked out of him.
With his usual energy and determination, Kezib sets up the ladder at the same point as Ruglan and begins his ascent. The legionnaire looks a little surprised that yet another opponent has decided to join him on the shadowy step. Yet, not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, the soldier waits for Kezib to put one foot on the riser before he attacks. Again, with blinding speed, the legionnaire makes a powerful thrust at the vulnerable monk. Kezib tries to turn the warrior's wrist aside at the last moment, but fails. The bloody blade rakes across Kezib's ribs, discoloring the monk's simple garments with crimson.
Unlike Ruglan, however, Kezib manages to retain his balance and gets both feet on the fourth step, though he is dangerously close to the legionnaire.
Ruig huffs and puffs his way up to Ruglan's position where he immediately calls down the blessing of the Storm Bull to heal the watchman's wounds. Ruglan feels much better, though he is still prone.

Re: 2 Ladders
Draxim cannot see much of the legionnaire, and Kezib is toe to toe with the well-armored warrior. A shot under these conditions would be difficult, and potentially dangerous for Kezib.

Re: 2 Ladders
Up on the fourth step, things go quickly from bad to worse. The legionnaire, moving with skill and precision, slides south a bit, getting his back to the next riser. Kezib stands before him in the Crane stance, trembling with concentration as blood oozes from his chest.
The legionnaire does not hesitate. Stepping in against his unarmored opponent with his shield tight against his torso, the soldier lashes upward with his blade, almost knocking Kezib's quarterstaff from his grip. While the monk struggles to regain his balance after such a powerful strike, the legionnaire pluges his blade downward from left to right. The wicked point of the weapon drives into Kezib's abdomen, raising a cry of pain and fear. The legionnaire then twists the blade in Kezib's gut and drags it back out with a side to side motion.
Kezib drops to the flagstones like a sack of meat, gushing blood.

Re: 2 Ladders
Draxim will wait until such time as things clear up (if they ever do) and fire then. Essentially he is keeping his crossbow trained on the guy, and if he gets a shot, he takes it. Or alternately if the dwarf gets frisky, he will pincushion him. (No reply to Draxim's guess about the digging noises?)
[Edit: Like now for instance]

Re: 2 Ladders
When Kezib drops, Draxim takes his shot.
The bolt flies quickly to its target, but the legionnaire is up to the challenge, and the missile buries itself in the wooden slats of his shield.
To Draxim's questions the old dwarf simply shakes his head. Clearly he thinks that Draxim is a fool.

Stop!
[OK. You understand that the ladder from the third step to the fourth leads right up to the legionnaire, and that the last two people who went up that ladder ended up on the ground? I mean, how many Attacks of Opportunity do you want to give this guy?]

Re: A tale of 2 ladders
[None, Not the way I wanted it to go down but this is the only chance now. The Sanctuary spell should help. If he fails his saving throw then he loses the attack. You only get 1 AOO per round, unless he has combat reflexes, which it seems he does.]

Charge of the Light Brigade
[Okie dokie. Sadly, Sangraal's Sanctuary spell expired about three rounds ago.]
Sangraal boldly goes where only Kezib and Ruglan have gone before - straight up the ladder to face the merciless soldier of the Empire. As the priest makes his ascent he can't help but notice copious amounts of blood pouring across the flagstones and down the riser onto the step below. He never imagined his boyhood chum Kezib had so much in him.
The legionnaire, not even breathing hard at this point, gives Sangraal a quizical look. It seems he expected the priest to seize his injured companion and haul him away, but when Sangraal continues his climb the soldier immediately attacks. The blade flashes in, though Sangraal does manage to put up a bit of a defense, deflecting the blade from his chest into the meat of his left arm. It is a brutal cut and Sangraal almost drops his weapon as the agonizing fire races up his arm.
The priest also succeeds in rolling with the hit enough that he isn't sent plunging down to join Ruglan. [Sagramore would have never made that Balance check.]
Howling in rage and fury, his feet drenched in the blood of his friend Kezib, Sangraal brings his flail down on the warrior before him. The powerful but clumsy attack is met by the soldier's shield and the flail ricochets down onto the floor, raising a shower of sparks from its iron-shod head.

Re: 2 Ladders
Madragar moves to aim his crossbow at the Legionnaire. He will take a shot the instant that none of his companions would be endangered thereby.
Speaking to the dwarf he asks "Who is this Legionnaire? Why is he here and why did he attack us?"

Re: Charge of the Light Brigade
"Feh!" the dwarf dismissively exclaims. "Figure it out for yourself."
[Sangraal is standing due east of the legionnaire, so any shot from Madragar's position is likely to hit him.]

Don't make me bust you up man!
Witnessing the dissassembly of two of his companions, Atan finds himself wishing he had his bow at this moment. Sword gripped tightly in both hands he advances tentatively, his right shoulder close to the wall. With Meneloss at his side, he quickly covers the last five feet. Calculatingly he throws his right shoulder against the shield and feints for the legionaires sword arm. Reversing his blades direction at the last moment he thrusts it back and up towards the armored man chest.

Down Down Down, Legoinaire's going down
Meneloss draws his blade and though clearly intimdated by the hulking human warrior, closes the five feet to engage. Fighting side by side with Atan, Meneloss is heartened to know he is not alone on the slick stair of death.
His mouth dry and his limbs shaking from a mixture of fear and adreneline the untested elf slashes at the Legoinaire.

Underestimation Nation
At least that glorious maneuver is what Atan would have done if Fate had not been reading from a different script...
The two elves, shoulder to shoulder, approach the veteran warrior who seems only mildly occupied by the madly flailing (literally) Sangraal. Atan is the first to dive in to make his attack, but is absolutely stunned to be met half-way by the point of the legionnaire's sword. With incredible swiftness the soldier lunges to his left, stabbing through Atan's feeble guard and directly into his chest.
Atan stops dead in his tracks. His sword drops to the cold flagstones and blood guggles out his mouth. The elf staggers backward and falls to the floor, coughing up gobbets of the red stuff.
In the fraction of a second that Meneloss tries to register the legionnaire's uncanny quickness, the soldier slashes at his head only to have the attack glance off his protective magic. Saved again...
[That's 3 AoOs for those counting, and apparently a 10' reach.]
Meneloss does his best against the expert warrior, but he is clearly out matched. The elf's blade is easily turned aside by the legionnaire's shield.
....
On the step below, the wounded Ruglan and the very wounded Ruig can only watch the massacre going on nearby. Ruig drops his hammer and hustles half-way up the ladder. Grabbing the limp form of Kezib he hauls it down into his arms, safe from the stomping feet of the incensed Sangraal, and drags the young monk away from the ladder.
