Re: Monkey Man Meneloss loves ladders and ropes.
Meneloss won't shut up for a second. The dwarves look at him as if he has gone cavern-mad. "I have an idea for getting the rest across without any spikes."
He continues...
"Once I am across, I can pull the next climber across the chasm the north wall using a rope. They dangle down from the end of the ladder about 15 feet. Then with a safety line around their waist I simply haul them to the wall where they climb aided by the rope over the ledge. Atan is our best climber so it should be him. "
"After we have enough people on the North ledge we haul the ladder across the chasm and the others swing out as I did but the opposite. Then we haul them in like great big Rock Fish."
He looks at Madragar as he mentions his colleagues most hated animal.

Re: Monkey Man Meneloss loves ladders
"I actually only have one coil about 50' left. But you could pull 20' off of the door ring" he points toward the door that opens to the room where Yimris met his demise. " I still don't like it. Why don't we just wait for Kezib and Sangraal to get better, kill the broo and walk around? Also why don't we throw a torch over there to see if it is even worth it?" Draxim will wait until one of the torches is near death, and then heave it across the chasm to the ledge, which apparently holds some pheremonal attraction for his elvish freind.

Re: Monkey Man Meneloss loves sky diving with no parachute
"I'm a fair climber myself, being in tune with the living rock, Snake Handler, but I'm not so good with over 100 pounds of gear. Which reminds me, you are going to have to haul across an awful lot of equipment. Tell you what, I'll agree that it could be done and yer right, if you agree not to do it. We can just as easily get to the broo we want to kill by walking, as we can by swinging about like monkeys over endless chasms from a rickety ladder."

Re: Monkey Man Meneloss loves sky diving with no parachute
Ruig shakes his head.
"Get the rest across? I have no intention of hurling myself across the void, risking my neck for no purpose other than to satisfy an elf's curiosity. Go if you like, but these boots will stay on solid ground."

Re: Ladder Man Meneloss loves Monkeys
Ruglan chimes in, "I'm concerned about the noise made by the spikes. We may be attacked before we all cross. Maybe we should dispatch the broo first and then use some of the giant's furniture to construct a span across this chasm."

Re: Ladder Man Meneloss loves Monkeys
Looking at Ruig Kezib pipes up "Im in agreement with Ruig. I feel trying to reach the other side is folly. I can appreciate your exuberance and desire *cough* but..." Kezib pauses, searching for the words.
"Sangraal is down, Yimris is gone to Humkat, yet we continue to bicker about crossing this space that is obviously a task that leaves the question, whats the purpose of it. Meneloss" Kezib turns to Meneloss "it is only you that is obsessed with crossing this chasim. If that is the path that you choose to take, may Yelm go with you my friend. I will be saddned if you do choose that path, but it is your path alone to choose. Im staying, and Yelm willing, I will be here for my friend when he awakes from his prolonged sleep"
Kezib moves next to Sangraal and kneels next to him, praying to the sun god.

He looks so cute like that doesn't he?
Meneloss looks pityingly upon the wounded and delerious Kezib. He pats the monk's bald head and in a soothing voice says
"Kezib, nobody is going anywhere until Sangraal wakes. If it is my path alone then I am sad because I cannot do it without everyone's help. But I think Kezib..."
Meneloss looks into the monk's eyes to make sure he understands what he is saying.
"...that it is not only me who wants to cross this chasm. Madragar and Atan also think it is a worthy endeavor. At any rate do not worry about such things now. Sleep and regain your strength."

And then...?
[sorry I have been so single-minded with this ladder thing but I think it is hard to communicate ideas via these posts.]
Meneloss suprisingly changes the subject and addresses Draxim "I do not think we will leave Old Kerlew tomorrow to be back in time for me to buy you that ale. I wish I was back at the lodge of the Ghurugil now drinking instead of here in this hole."
The elf lays out his bedroll and gets ready for sleep. "What are to be the watches? I agree with Madragar that Draxim and Ruig should keep watch. Though the two alone cannot do it. I'll stay up with Draxim while he is on watch. Who will keep Ruig company?"
Then Meneloss sleeps or keeps watch depending...
[I know I am the main guilty party in keeping this debate going but let's see what happens in the 'morning']
[Meneloss has a hard time sleeping since it is still before noon. I have no intention of roleplaying twenty hours on a dark stone staircase, so if no one has any pressing business I'll move things along. -GM]

Its the jeans...and his pretty mouth.
"you just want to swindle me for more ales I'll wager. I really don't think I will go either. Meneloss there is something else. If you need to get out of there fast, how will you get back across quickly?"
Draxim will try to catch a cat nap in preparation for staying up all night.

Re: Its the jeans...and his pretty mouth.
"You had to bring it back up didn't you?" Meneloss chides his Dwarven pal.
"If I need to get back across in a hurry, I'll return the way I came: by swinging like a Valegalen tree squirrel. I do not intend to not have a safety rope around me at all times. If I need to go farther than the rope allows, I'll keep it coiled up but still tied. I can throw the rope back across so that I have a safety for my return trip."
Fidgeting in the dark he muches some more nuts and fruits. then he whispers to Draxim "If you were a giant and you had treasure, where would you keep it?" He lets the question hang in the still dark air. The possibility of riches hopefully getting the better of Draxim.

A priest, a wizard and a monk go into a bar...
"Ruig may have a point, Meneloss. With the spells, you, I and even a few others may cross the chasm to scout. We can then decide whether the rope-and-ladder apparatus is worthwhile to construct."
"Also, it may well be that whatever is down this tunnel is as interesting or moreso than whatever is across that chasm."

"It looks like you are out numbered Meneloss. Ruig, Kezib, Ruglan and Draxim. That's the majority right now unless you can get Sangraal to chime in." Atan looks over at the comatose cleric. Seeing no reaction, he continues, "Ruglan does bring up a good point. We can always come back here later. The other paths seem more dangerous to me but... what can you do."
Before going to sleep Atan checks everyones bandages and especially Sangraal to make sure no infections are setting in. "I'll take the watch with brûn dôl Casar....Ruig that is.", he says with a mischevious grin aimed towards Meneloss.

Re: ..and then he says, "I said go GETa DUCK[
Meneloss looks at Sangraal and nods. "If he cannot speak in the morning, Then what?"
He then continues a conversation in Elven with Atan in low tones.

....But the duck had a parole violation.....
[OOC: Just wanted to keep the title subplot going.]
The boat is rocking gently in the current and Sangraal is startled to find himself at sea. "this can't be right" he says to the lapping waves.
"Yes, the answer is" says an opossum that Sangraal could have sworn wasn't there a second ago. The voice is familiar and Sangraal looks questioningly at the marsupial stowaway.
"Yimris?" he asks.
"I already answered that question..." the opossum replies rapping its bare pink tail against the weathered teak railing.
"No, No, No. Yimris was an elf." The cleric says completely baffled.
"He was...an elf... now hes a opossum. Was I believe is the key word of that phrase." The rodent gives Sangraal a vexed look before scampering down the length of the railing and drops down a scupper.
Sangraal throws himself across the deck to land painfully before the scupper. He can hear the sounds of water against the hull coming up through the scupper but no sign of Yimris.
"Yimris? I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I failed. " he calls down the tube...
"...Use the ladder we'll make a pulley system... no, I won't fall if you help...." Suprised again and feeling foolish Sangraal leaps to his feet.
"Whose there?" he announces.
"..Bah! its 10000 feet deep and I'm a dwarf so I'm being conservative in my estimation..."
"Those voices" he thinks "where are they coming from......"
On a makeshift bed, in a makeshift camp, in the belly of Old Kurlew, Sangraal the Pious lays.

Morning?
Hours pass in the cool darkness of the staircase. Sangraal lies pale and motionless under a pile of blankets, his wounds oozing red and yellow fluid. There is little conversation, and the passage of time is hard to measure. Some of the travellers eat, some sleep, but no one is entirely comfortable.
[Mark off three meals from you equipment lists.]
At long last Meneloss and Madragar realize a growing, innate sense that their minds are ready to receive new patterns and formulae... their daily spells. Sangraal has survived the night, and in the sunless dawn regains consciousness.
Sangraal's wounds are severe, and Ruig confirms that they are still beyond his ability to heal. Though Sangraal is in no shape to summon the power of his god, Ruig does what he can to alleviate his wounds, and those of Kezib and Atan.
[
After this...
Ruig is moderately wounded
Atan is lightly wounded
Kezib is lightly wounded
Sangraal is in the negatives

Re: Morning?
Meneloss is overjoyed to see Sangraal survived the night. "The Sun shines upon you even in the depths of the earth! You had a fitful sleep and though you must have had strange dreams and visions, I thought it was your death-rattle."
Looking on a the others who are wounded and Sangraal who is still very wounded, Meneloss whips out his sword and says "Let's charge out the top door and slay all the Broo!"
Waiting a moment for his joke to settle in he adds "I am going across the chasm today. Who is going to help me?"

Re: Morning?
"By Yelms Glory!" Kezib says excitedly, when seeing Sangraal come back to the land of the concious, making sure he doesnt yell.
"Its really good to see you back, brother. I thought I was going to have to travel to your homelands and spread the bad news, but alas, that wont have to happen today" Kezib finishes with a big smile.

Re: Morning?
Atan hungrily munchs on some dried fruit he brought along, "Good morning, Sangraal. I am glad you are alive and awake so you can watch Meneloss try and kill himself today. He is bound and determined to not let any amount of reason to sway him."

Re: Morning?
"Reason won't sway me, though a rope will!" He retorts to Atan's good-natured* barb.
"Come on then, let's stop talking about it and let's do this." He briefs the others as to his plan,
"Ok now remember from yesterday? Draxim you tie a damn good knot around my waist because if the ladder breaks or I somehow slip that is the only thing keeping me alive. Draxim, Ruglan and Ruig will be the counter weight on the ladder. You three will also hold my line. Atan and Kezib, you two hold a line to the ladder so in case it breaks, we won't lose it."
Meneloss removes his armor. He straps a torch across his back (UNLIT!) And also removes his sword. He takes with him:
A scroll of protection from chaos
1 dagger
flint and steel
2 iron spikes
30' rope
1 flask of oil
waterskin
back pack (emptied of other contents)
When he has everything prepared :Ladder, rope etc... he casts spider climb Then he turns back at the assembled company and says "Here goes nothing!"
He steps out into the void... and swings ...
