Drumroll please...
The contraption is assembled, and Sangraal's wounded form is left alone on the cold dark step. The expedition's single lantern barely illuminates the opposite ledge and into the vast chasm Meneloss steps.

[You have now used up four pints of oil and two torches since entering the mountain.]

Meneloss sails through the darkness and the ladder groans under the strain has he reaches the nadir of his trajectory. Yet, it holds firm and the elf is carried up again. The north ledge, it seems, is a bit farther away than it looks and Meneloss is only able to just touch it with his fingers. The stretching digits stick to the sides of the ledge for a moment, but Meneloss' weight breaks this tenuous adhesion and he pendulum's back to the south ledge.

While able to easily catch hold of the side of the southern ledge, Meneloss is unable to climb because he is still wearing boots. Hauling himself up the rope he reaches the end of the ladder, then makes his way along it back to the ledge.

Again Again!
Meneloss removes his boots and puts thm in his pack. He instructs his crew to let out another foot or so of rope.

"Humakt's Oath I was not sure it could be done! Let's try again."

Re: Again Again!
Meneloss sails down, out, up and sticks to the side of the opposite ledge like a bug.

Extreme D+D!
His heart is pounding and for a moment he cannot hear a thing. The adrenaline is surging through his body and through deep gasps and breaths he calls out "I'm across!"
He scurries up to the top of the ledge and instructs his crew to pay out some slack, but not to release the safety.

Once safely on the ledge He removes his torch and lights it.

Re: Extreme D+D!
Meneloss, still barefoot, is at the southern edge of a ledge thirty feet east to west and extending off to the north beyond the limit of his torchlight (that's 40' with his elven vision). He's got about ten feet of rope wrapped around him acting as a sort of harness, twenty feet back to the southern ledge, and ten feet in the hands of his crew. That doesn't leave him much slack if he wants to explore "safely."

Re: Extreme D+D!
Having a look around he calls to the opposite side that he is going to check things out a little further.

"Does anyone want to join me?" he jokes.

Then he tells the crew to release the rope. Meneloss hauls it in and coils it about his chest. He is careful to not untie the harness but leave it tied about him.

He keeps his boots off for now and set out North to see what he can see.

[spider climb 10 minutes - whatever time it took to get to this point]

I'll be damned!
Atan laughs out loud at Meneloss's success, "He made it! Well I guess we wait now to see what he finds. Cavern crazy elf!"

Meneloss walks north off into the darkness. [Note to Meneloss.]

Glad to be alive
Sangraal settles back onto his bundle of blankets upon hearing Atans laughter. Content that Meneloss's crazy foray, what little he heard of it, was a success he slips back into an uncomfortable sleep. The cold of the stone reaching up through layers of wool, preventing him from retaining any real warmth.

[OOC: Can Sangraal put on his wool cap and mittens on his own? or does he need help?]

[Sangraal was well bundled up by his companions using his winter clothing. The loss of blood is what is making him cold. Any movement is extremely painful, and risks both further injury and sending Sangraal back into la-la land. -GM]

Re: Glad to be alive
Meneloss proceeds north along the ledge, his receding form lit by the orange glow of a single torch. He stops several times, scanning his surroundings, and when he is around one hundred feet away he appears to reach the opening of an immense archway in the north wall of the chasm. Passing through the archway Meneloss goes a short distance and reaches what looks like a dead end, though the glint of something large and metallic can just barely be seen in the distant torchlight.

Soon, Meneloss comes hurrying back.

Madragar watches with interest, though he kneels by Sangraal and slowly helps him sip water and nibble small pieces of food.

Creepin' and Peepin'
The party waits on the southern ledge, watching Meneloss' torch head North into the gloom. It grows fainter and then they see it wink out entirely.

[Actually, it doesn't wink out entirely. -GM]

After a few minutes which seem like hours, the filckering light of the torch is seen again. It heads directly to the southern ledge. The group opposite can make out a beeming Meeneloss. His grin, though made crooked by his massive scar, spreads wider than any have ever seen it.

Standing across from the group, Meneloss calls out

"I've found something! A door with some sort of giant lock set in it."

He says to Madragar "Though it seems you might be able to access this ledge by going across the ceiling, if you wish to come across, try my method. We know it works.

Re: Creepin' and Peepin'
[Oh for 'Fanmukh's Tiny Bridge', a magic device Den used to carry, but never used.]

"You're a braver man than I, Meneloss," laughs Madragar, gently. "You should have been an acrobat."

"So," he asks the others on the hither side of the chasm, "is anyone else going? I have a single spell of perfect adherence with which I can easily cross, but unless we have some means of unlocking that door and also getting us all across (including Sangraal and Ymris), I am not sure it is the route we should take. What say you?"

"Perhaps we should search for a giant key," says Ruglan. "I'm not going to take a chance crossing the gap now. I'll wait until we have something better."

"There is no key as such. It is more like a puzzle. Fearing a trap, I let it be. I think Draxim may have some insight into its workings. What do you say old chum? Fancy a flight across yon abyss?"

Meneloss cannot keep from smiling at his achievement.

Re: Creepin' and Peepin'
"Not the way you went fancy lad! Some of us have a ton of muscle. I outweigh you by 2 stone or more. I doubt that ladder would hold me and then how do we get back across when your enchanting runs out? If we make a rope bridge, that would be preferable. But there's really nowhere to drive a spike in this place."

Re: Creepin' and Peepin'
Meneloss looks at the stalwart Dwarf across the way and then his gaze turns to the ladder.

"Mayhaps you are right Draxim. I think you could creep across the ceiling if Madragar magiked you. But you would be stuck on this side after the enchantment wore off."

Meneloss thinks for a moment and says "Could you use the giant hammer and chisel for an anchor?"

Looking around the barren ledge he is on he continues "There is nothing to anchor on this side though."

Re: Creepin' and Peepin'
Sangraal stirs at the conversation occuring across the chasm.

"Let the door be, if its trapped so much the better. We know the broo have'nt come in that way so if we leave it locked then that is one less way we have to worry about. Those who want to ponder it should do so, but if you are overcome by injury then nothing much can save you. I do not see Master Ruig suffering the indignity of the dwarf-an-rope technique in his current state. By all means explore all methods of entrance or escape but leave them be till we are of strength." Sangraal takes a long deserved breath before finishing.
" We must learn from our hard taught lessons, to repeat them is to embrace failure."

Re: Creepin' and Peepin'
Atan seems excited at the discovery, "I'll go over but I don't think I have the skills needed to open the door. By chance did you try and open it? Or did you just leave it alone? Draxim I.... I think you should go check it out." The ranger smacks his fist into his hand, "If only we all could get across."

Atan will periodically check Sangraal to change his dressing and check his wounds.

[OOC: Can I estimate how long Sangraal will be crippled like this?]

And behind Door #1...
"I left it be." returns Meneloss.

"I'll wager there is no safer place in Old Kerlew than where I am right now. If the Broo got in here I'd like to have a 10,000 foot drop between them and me."

"I have an idea to get others across. Since my first idea worked, please hear me out..."

[I'll explain OOC: 1) Atan or Kezib is safety harnessed. 2) I trhrow a line across and that is tethered to the crosser 3) The crosser is lowered 4) I pull the crosser across the chasm. 5) The crosser climbs up the North side, aided by the rope and Meneloss and safety belay from the opposite side. 6) once Atan or Kezib is across (or both), Draxim's bulk can be handled the same way.
here is a
diagram]
