Re: Yimris' Equipment
[From Ymris's rations we each get 1 day plus 1 meal]
Once the party has negotiated a few staris Meneloss will go back to retrieve the corpse with whomever will accompany him.

"Salt!" Exclaims Meneloss as he hands out the food. He doles out 1/8 lb portions of salt along with the rations.

He then undertakes the unpleasant task of removing the armor and bloodstained clothes from Yimris. Using some of Yimris's water and swatch of cloth from the dead elf's cloak, Meneloss bathes the corpse. He hums an ancient Elven lament as he does this task. Once the body is relatively clean, he uses Yimris's empty sack and bedroll as a shroud. He then takes a lenght of rope from his coil and wraps the corpse in a neat bundle. As he does this, he asks "Who will keep guard at the doorway?"

Once the corpse is prepared he asks Ruig what to do with the body
"Master Ruig, in this close space a bonfire is out of the question. The stone cannot be dug. Where do we place the body?"

Re: Yimris' Equipment
[The sword is with the broo...so it better count towards their encumberance.]

Atan looks at the blood soaked cold weather clothing and equipment. Shaking his head, "I need nothing, but we shouldn't waste the food. Grab his pack and chuck it on the ladder. We can sort through when we get to the stairs."

THe Legionnaire
"I know no more of the Legionnaire than you. When we spoke in Lunar, it was merely my demand that he cease his slaughter, and his that I release his companion. I agree with Ruig - the dwarf was a mercenary and little else."

Re: THe Legionnaire
Ruig scratches at his beard as the group moves along the dark hallway.

"Sangraal would know more of burial rites than I. We burn them where I come from, though sometimes bury. Both seem out of the question here. I suppose Yimris isn't going anywhere. We can return for him later."

The expedition, many of the travellers groaning with the dull throb of their bloody wounds, make their way south along the corridor for a hundred feet or so, then several hundred west before reaching the bottom of the other stairs. Removing Sangraal from the ladder the group makes their way up the series of risers, passing the priest's limp body up as they go. Stopping at, say, the ninth step they make camp.

Everyone is exhausted from the battle, the weight of the extra equipment, and hauling around the various dead and unconscious bodies. It is almost certainly well before noon, but no one has the energy to do anything but sip at their waterskins and eat a little trail rations. Meneloss' second torch finally burns out.

So much can happen in a mere 2 hours.
[How tall is the ladder? Would it bridge the chasm?]

"If anyone is having weight problems, I can carry quite a lot." announces Draxim.
"I will carry Yimris's other things if no one else wishes to."
He thinks back to Meneloss' admonition about secrets, and adds, "I have taken the possessions of dead men before, for much less noble purposes." He searches amongst his companions fearing reproach for his past misdeeds. Then he realizes he can't see them and he uses Yimris's flint and steel to light a torch. He then pockets the flint and steel with absent-minded ease. Realizing what he just did, he shakes his head and continues to transfer Yimris' belongings to his own pack. He takes on:

winter clothes
flint and steel
waterskin
backpack
studded leather.

The backpack and the studded leather, he rolls up and packs as best he can. The resulting tower of bundles above and below his backpack exceeds his height slightly, but the burly dwarf is more than equal to the task.

Re: So much can happen in a mere 2 hours.
Upon reaching the landing, Atan quicky drops his pack in the far corner. Fishing into the well worn leather pack he retrieves his medical kit. Scurrying over to Sangraal he checks his wounds to ensure they did not reopen during transport. If necessary he provides treatment to the critically injured cleric.

Once done with Sangraal he moves onto Ruig, "I didn't get to thank you for saving my life earlier so.....thanks. Now let me look at that wound on your head.....yep, thickheaded just as I thought." Atan applies some bandages and salve from the medic kit before moving on to Kezib.

Once done attending to the wounded Atan wearily walks over to his backpack and retrieves his water bottle and some salted jerky. Heading over to the stairs edge he sits with a slight groan of pain. His legs dangling over the side, bow in his lap, he attacks his food practically inhaling the tough meat and washing it down with a long drink. Eyes cast downward, he stares down into the darkness for awhile.

Watching in the dark
Meneloss takes another torch from Draxim's bundle. Having been protected by his master's charms, Meneloss is not as weary as the others. "Someone should wander within earshot of the door." He mentions. Looking over the group he sizes up the wounded and then looks at Draxim and Madragar.
"We are the fortunate few who have been spared hurts this day. Let's split up a watch near the lower door."

Meneloss volunteers the first watch. He will sit near a torch placed between him and the door; far enough to barely see the door and close enough to hear the scratchings and snufflings of the Broo on the other side.

Menloss leaves his backpack with the group but holds onto a flask of oil and Sangraal's remaining javelin.

Re: Watching in the dark
[Atan might want to 'take 20' on his Heal checks. He's got plenty of time.]

Ruig sits down with his back against the cold stone step before taking off his helmet for Atan to inspect his wound. Producing a less than clean rag from his pack he gingerly dabs at the bloody line.

"Meneloss... what happens to the watcher if the broo open the door? He will never make it back here in time to warn us."

Re: Watching in the dark
[how far is it from the door to the stair? Did Ruglan keep the lantern from the 'legionaire stair' ?]

Meneloss nods in assent. "Aye it is a far way to run. And those Broo have long strides. If they get through the door we'll find out sooner or later."

So then he sits at the edge of the stair on his bedroll. He is starving especially from losing his breakfast earlier that morning. He ravenously devours some smoked sausage and hunks of sharp cheese.

Re: Watching in the dark
[OK...forgot about taking 20. Atan will save his medical kit and take 20 on checking on everyone.]

"Meneloss you are brave to volunteer to watch the door but I agree with Ruig. Stay here, for they will either find us or not. If they do, I want us all together if possible." Atan pulls out some bread and a very small ceramic pot. Removing the leather thong holding the top of the pot, he dips in a chunk of bread. When he pulls the bread out it is glistening with a viscous amber liquid. Offering some to Meneloss he whispers excitedly, "Honey! Last of the summer harvest. I was saving it....not sure for what but now seems as good as any time to eat it. Don't won't the stink'n animal-men to get it."

With lips smacking from the honeyed bread, he points into the darkness, the chunk of bread serving as a pointer, "I think if we arn't found by the Broo we should try and cross that chasm if possible." Taking another swig of his water skin he swallows the last moistened bit of food in his mouth. "Any ideas on how to get across?"

Re: Watching in the dark
[The stairs are about one hundred feet south and four hundred feet west of the door. The ladder is about fifteen feet long, so not quite long enough to bridge the chasm.]

Re: Watching in the dark
[can the dwarves see to the the bottom of the chasm? Does the rift extend up through the ceiling as well? How high? How far across is the chasm?]

Meneloss flashes Atan a smile when the small jar of honey is brought out. Meneloss dips a rind of bread into the pot and savors the sweet sticky treat. "I can taste the flowers ,see the meadow coverd in clover surrounded by majestic conifers and feel Yelm's warmth on a late summer afternoon." Meneloss closes his eyes as he narrates his vision; so far away from the dark and cold stone cavern they find themselves in now.

When his torch nears the end of it's life, he casts it into the chasm to try and catch a glimpse of the bottom.

Re: Watching in the dark
Madragar agrees with Meneloss' suggestion, and says to Draxim "He is right. We must be eyes and ears until all are rested. Let us take the ladder and return to the door so that we might hear what transpires there."

And picking up the ladder, he goes, hopefully with Draxim's assistance.

Re: Watching in the dark
Meneloss takes the ladder and descends the stairs, torch in hand. Reaching the ledge he lites a new torch and hurls the old one in. He watches it fall out of sight into the dark abyss. He then returns with the ladder.

[The dwarves cannot see the bottom of the chasm, or the top. The opposite ledge is 20' from the ledge at the bottom of the stairs.]

Shaggy! You and Scoob go check it out.....
[Besides, splitting up is always a good idea.]

"Yes perhaps we three should go investigate. Although I do not think that we will be able to hear anything through that immense door unless it is quite loud." Something the mercenary dwarf said comes back to him, and he puts his ear to the floor again listening for the digging sounds (or undigging?) that Ruig heard earlier. He mentions this to Ruig to get his take on it.

Percoset spider plan
Atan stands and tries to stop them from leaving, "Posting by the door will do nothing but split us. We already know the Broo are there. They are probably trying to find a way in. The door was too thick to hear discernable words before, it will be no different now." Atan looks for help from Ruig, "This is folly is it not master dwarf? In this weakened state the three are of you are our primary defenders. Stay here, for whomever is at the door if they open it, will be dead. None of you could hope to out run a Broo over a hundred yards and then climb these stairs and I will not leave the ladder down there for if it is taken they will ascend quickly and kill us. We will have enough warning from our position here. If they do come, the three of you have missile weapons that we must have here to cut down there numbers while they climb." His head shakes vigorously with dissent, "We must stay amassed."

[Why do you need the ladder to go guard the door anyways? ]

Re: Shaggy! You and Scoob go check it out.....
[Raggy!]

Meneloss having already been pursuaded by Ruig, adds to Atan's vehement opposition.
"Aye, If they come, we will know. And we have ought to gain by knowing later than sooner if they have come through the door. Indeed, the warning we will give would be from the sounds of us overwhelmed like the late Yimris there." He points to the enshrouded corpse for emphasis.
"Besides, Atan is right, if the ladder is down below, it will only speed the Broo's ascent of theses stairs. If it is shuttled back up, then we shall be most late in our ascent. Sit down good friends."
He says to Atan, Madragar and Draxim who have crowded around the ladder.

[Yimris' corpse isn't so much enshrouded and nearby, as half-naked and laying near the secret door.]

What's the point of recovering the corpse if you are not going to bury it? Oh well:) ]
