Failure is hardly original
Atan, obviously skeptical, smiles at the small feat of engineering proposed. "Ten feet...hmmm. But how do we get the last ten feet? I think running and jumping is out of the question. Do we have neough rope as well to do all this?"

Re: It'll never work!
"Not you stumpy!" Meneloss jokes. "We only need one person to get across to anchor a rope on the far side. Then we rig a rope bridge." He looks at Kezib. "When you feel better, I'm sure you can do it! We'll tie a safety rope around your waist in case you fail."
He looks at rUig and adds "If you have an idea let's hear it. The same goes for all of you, especially the quiet ones Ruglan Kezib and Madragar!"
Then he continues: With the ladder extending into the chasm, the end of it can anchor a rope, so that one may swing from our side to the opposite. With either Madragar's or my spell, it can easily be done."

Re: It'll never work!
Ruig takes Meneloss' crude diagram and adds a few notes of his own. Of course, being a dwarf his writing is incredibly precise.
"I've heard tales of forest born elves going mad while underground, though I never thought I'd see it myself. What makes you think you can simply hammer spikes into these flagstones and that they will be sturdy enough to hold up your ridiculous contraption? Or that the ladder will not wildly sway while the demented projectile is running across it? One day you should really consider thinking things through."
Ruig grimaces, the argument clearly hurting his wounded head.
"What is this obsession with the opposite ledge? For all we know there could be a whole series of chasms to cross."

Someone's gonna get hurt
"I don't know about this Meneloss. The ladder was already cracking under the wieght of two people....so some one running across it and jumping.......secured the way it is....." Atan's sentence trials off leaving his conclusion quite obvious.
"If you can get someone to do this they are braver then I. Madragar, do you have another spell of wall climbing?"

Re: It'll never work!
[here is another diagram ]
"There may be a sally out of this infernal hole, or treasure or anything we will never know unless we seek it out. If there is another chasm well then we'll know how to get back across. We do know this: There are Broo on either side of us. One exit they know of and it is a matter of time before they breach it."
Meneloss continues "Bahh naysayers! I can't abide by those who have nothing to input other than a negative comment. Here is the problem Dwarf: we need to get out of Old Kerlew. Now use your analytical mind and solve that problem! You say think it through, well master Ruig that is what we are doing are we not? Thinking it through."

Re: Someone's gonna get hurt
"Both Madragar and I can cast that spell. I have none ready now. After a sleep and a morning of reading, we'll have spells a plenty. I know where you are going with this Atan, we have no idea how far the chasm extends. The spell lasts 10 minutes that gives enough time to cover 1500 feet or so. So if it is more, then the climber is dead."

Re: It'll never work!
"Certainly," Ruig begins. "There are broo in Old Kurlew. We will see that Sangraal recovers from his injuries then seek out those broo and kill every one that we can find. Why have we come all this way if not to do some good while we are here? Would you have us flee the mountain before we have learned what became of Koraeus, or what these broo are up to?"

Re: Someone's gonna get hurt
Kezib looks at the diagrams, looks at Meneloss and says, with a smile "While I admire your idea's, which, at this time *cough* are better than mine *wince* but at this time, I choose not to test this theory. Already being close to death once today is enough for me" he finishes with a good hearted chuckle, then proceeds to violently cough up a little blood.

Re: It'll never work!
"And what of the legionaire who nearly slaughtered us all? Master Ruig, I have no intention of joining Yimris or the other Merek Lek just yet. Though you may wish to please Urox by making a last desperate stand, I would rather escape to return later with greater forces than our little band here. At any rate we may need to battle our way out. Must it be done without exploring other options? Here is a possible way out. It may even lead to Koreaus, mayaps he fled over yon chasm. We don't know and won't know untill we look that way."
He sulks for a moment, then asks Ruig and Draxim "How far underground are we? If we can tell the height of the ceiling above the chasm, then maybe Madragar or myself can climb up and over."

Re: It'll never work!
"Yes, the legionnaire that we cornered and attacked piecemeal while charging up a ladder? That was both unfortunate and unwise. He didn't seem that keen to assist the broo, and unlike them may accept negotiation. That is really secondary to the larger issue. There are broo under the mountain and they are here for a reason. I believe it would be much more dangerous, for us and the people of this land, if we fled before finding out what that reason is."

Yeah so
"He did not help the Broo nor did he hinder them. He is an enemy and when I get a chance I would see a dagger in his neck. But you are right, he is besides the point. Whether you like my 'crazed' idea or not, getting across the chasm is not a bad idea. If we could make a rope bridge, it could be a place of refuge if the broo get in here. I feel we have to check it out at least to see what is there."

Re: It'll never work!
Atan flinches, taken off guard by Meneloss's beratement. Holding up his hands, "Hold, hold! We -are- thinking this through and discussing things is how we can do it. Every idea we have is trash until we can make it work. If it looks like it won't work we move on. So lets not get ruffled here!" Looking over at Ruig, "Ruig you are right. Nothing says we have to go across the chasm....but nothing says we can't either. If we want to go across we need to figure out a way that won't get people killed. Right now we know broo are waiting at one end of this passage for us. So it makes good sense to try and cross this chasm. If we get across it makes it hard for the broo to follow and we maybe able to find another way out over there." Atan kicks his leggs like a kid on river pier, "Besides, I came here to eat some honey and kill shit load of Broo.........and I'm all out of honey."

Re: It'll never work!
Hearing Atan's comment Kezib looks up and smirks. "The broo are that a way" pointing to the direction of the door.
Trying his best not to laugh, because it hurts, he does manage a little chuckle that causes him to wince in pain.

Re: It'll never work!
Ruig snorts at Atan's attempts to mediate.
"Meneloss throws a tantrum and now you're willing to throw yourself across the deep abyss? It's absurd. It makes absolutely NO sense for us to cross the chasm. There are two ways out of this passage. Why not go back the way we came and attack the broo from above?"
Ruig looks around to the others, clearly searching for a friendly face... or maybe just a sane one.

Re: It'll never work!
Meneloss takes a breath and mutters in Elven. Ignoring Ruig's dig, he looks up at blackness "Ruig or Draxim, do either of you know how far underground we are? We may be able to estimate the height of the ceiling. If it is less than six hundred feet or so, the spell will work."
"Does anyone have any ideas besides charge out of the door? Anyone, Kezib? Ruglan? Draxim? Madragar?"

back for more
"We never got to look around that last room we were in." Ruglan finally says. "There could have been answers to the questions we seek. Perhaps we should rest and heal and go back, kill the broo, and continue our search." after a brief pause, Ruglan says, "If we position ourselves on an upper step, we could easily defend against the broo. Just like that legionaire did to us."

Re: back for more
Meneloss is obsessed with crossing the chasm and it is apparent when he continues:
"Simplifying the plan even more: one end of the ladder has a length of rope, say 15 feet or so. I volunteer to have a safety rope tied to my waist, so long as master Draxim ties it. the safety is secured by those on this side of the chasm. The rope from the end of the ladder is also tied to my waist. The end of the ladder on this side of the chasm is anchored by the weight of Draxim Ruglan and Ruig. Then I will prepare my spider climb spell. I leap from this side of the chasm and swing to the opposite side. With my spell I easily climb up the wall and onto the opposing ledge. I'll explore a bit to see if it is worth having more come across. If I need to return, I simply swing back across to our side.
We can test the strength of the ladder on the stair here. If it holds then great if not, I fall 10 feet and we are out a ladder barring any repairs."

Chill
Still trying to keep things civil, "Well, Master Ruig, I am not taking anyones side. I am just keeping all the options on the table until we reach a point that one option is better then the others. We have some time to talk about what we should do next so that is what we will do."
Shifting his seating on the stair, "Personally going back down to the Broo has alot of danger to it. They are probably trying to get past the door and have a fair number of troops there. They will not be easy to suprise. Going back up, that is not much better. The Broo and their allies know we are in here and will probably be guarding the way into the mountain which is close to the secret door, if they have troops to spare. Soooooo, until we have explored the other option, which we don't know much about, I am reluctant to say across the chasm is not our path."

Re: Chill
"Gentlemen," interject Madragar, "pray calm yourselves. If I may suggest a course of action?"
"Crossing the chasm is an excellent goal. I suggest that the safest way is, as Meneloss suggested, to wait the night and allow the two of us to use our spells of spider climb. We can save our torches by allowing the dwarves to be our watchmen. Darkness will not itself hurt us."
"However, we must also be ready for sudden flight, in case the broo discover another means to come at us through the tunnel. Perhaps some scouting in that direction would be a good idea."
