This one goes to eleven
Atan smiles at Madragar's rehashing of the plan. "Yes that is exactly what we were discussing. The spell sounds like the safest route across wouldn't you agree Meneloss? As for scouting I don't think it is necessary or prudent for reasons discussed before."

This one's gone to heavan
Meneloss looks over at Atan and his jaw drops. He raises his hands and shakes them at the black sky above. "Atan, have you not been listening to what I have been saying? The spell will last 10 minutes that is enough time to cover 1500 feet. We can go up and over if the ceiling is less than six hundred feet above. That is assuming of course that the ledge across the way is not some free standing pinnacle. He takes a sip of water from his waterskin to wet his lips, dry from so much talk. Continuing he adds "If yon wall leads around and the route is less than 1500 feet then that too is a safe route. The problem is it may place the climber very far from help same for the ceiling route. But the greatest problem is that if either distance is not less than 1500 feet combined, the climber dies." He looks at the short twenty feet seperating the party from the other side. Pointing at the distance he goes on "This we know is only twenty feet. If we test the ladder on this stair and it holds, swinging across is the safest and fastest method of crossing. If things go badly with the ladder, I at least can be tied to a rope held by stout companions."

Re: "Toss Me."
[Sorry for my absence. Meneloss said something about Draxim's dig. I think you meant Ruig, because I wasn't here to get my digs in. So without further ado:]
"Meneloss I will tie a rope for you. But if I do it will be to keep you from trying such a fool stunt swingin' around like a monkey. You heard that ladder creaking when we tried to put 2 people on it. So it breaks, you fall to your death, and we have to climb these cursed stairs without a ladder. No I am with Ruglan and Ruig here. We were doing fine against the broo once we pulled together as a team. I don't know what Yimris was thinking, running out ahead of everyone, but make no mistake that's what got him killed. I know those are hard words but they have to be said. Broo don't seem to use arrows much so we should use the bows and javelins while we can. Let them come to us. That's why we won in the farmhouse. I learned a lesson there. Simple is best. So if yer weirding can get you across the chasm then fine let's do that, but don't depend on that ladder, and do trust a dwarf when it comes to building things! I'll not see you get yourself killed on that rickety contraption!" Draxim stops to pant a bit, as he has forgotten to breathe again. He pulls out a dusty hanky and wipes the tirade-produced spittle from his prematurely silver beard.
[Uh Oh! The famed dwarven stubborness has congealed and clotted. Hey, he only does it because he cares.]

Breaking ladders
[Sorry for confusing the names.]
Meneloss seems almost to be in a trance. It seems the elf is thinking of nothing but his ladder scheme. He amazingly continues his pitch:
"Would I fall to my death Master Draxim, if around my waist was a safety rope tied with your best knot and at the other end of the rope were your burly arms holding on for my dear life? I'll put my trust in you. Or anyone else here for that matter. I trust you won't let me fall.
Once I swing across the spider climb spell will enable me to cling to the opposite wall. Then I effortlessly climb up to the other side.
The question is will ladder hold? It is easily solved by testing it from a step. A fall of 8 feet will not kill anyone. If the rung and arms of the ladder can't support my weight, we'll know and I'll speak no more on the subject. I think it might If two ropes were used like a sling, then the weight is divided between each arm rather than all the weight on one rung.
If the ladder won't hold I do not like the idea of wandering off into the gloom not knowing how far it is to the other side. I would rather face the Broo. In that respect I also agree with Ruig we should go to the upper secret door.
So can we put this to rest by testing if the ladder will support my weight hanging and swinging? If it works, we'll try it for real tommorrow morning. If it fails the stair test, then let's ascend the stairs and in the morning we'll kill a shit load of Broo."

Two....two spells...hahahahahaha!
"Meneloss you said that both you and Madragar have that climbing spell. As long as I heard you correctly, then Madragar could cast the spell on you and then later while you are climbing, if it is necessary, you can cast the next. Once you reach the other side we can throw a rope to retrieve you if your path is blocked. The hard part is getting everyone across if we make it. I guess the last person on one side will just have to tie off and jump for it. Might hurt a little but I think it is worth a try. This is of course depending on Sangraal being able to move by morning."

"Another thing I don't like about your elf-brained scheme is the hammering. If we don't need to make that kind of noise, we shouldn't. Ruig and I can hear the digging. Others would certainly hear spike pounding and probably investigate."

Re: Two....two spells...hahahahahaha!
Ruig shrugs.
"The broo wouldn't, and the dwarf would hear only if he was listening. I'm more concerned about the ladder. It is a simple tool, but if it breaks we will have much more difficulty navigating this place."
"Oh, and Meneloss, we are about six hundred feet below where we entered, but I believe there is much more stone above our heads than that. My senses tell me we are somewhere beneath the peak itself."

Re: Two....two spells...hahahahahaha!
[ooc: the revised plan does not call for hammering spikes... Just two ropes tied at one end with 3 characters weighting the ladder at the other. Once across though we are going to have to hammer a safety belay.]
Meneloss incredibly is still not ready to give it a rest:
He smiles at Draxim and says "You don't think they know we are here? "
"Ruig, if the ladder breaks at the top rung it will not affect its performance overly. If it breaks at the at the ledge we'll still have a ten foot section which would get us up these stairs. We'd have to tie a safety to the ladder as well to prevent it from falling."
He goes on "I have a spell of mending which can fix the ladder if it breaks."
"Please I'll drop this once and for all if we can test it on the stair here before we sleep."
Meneloss pulls up the ladder and placed it on the ledge with about 10 feet of the ladder extending out. He instructs the debate team to sit on the end which is on the stair. He then will drop down through a rung, and like a kid, do the monkey bars to the end of the ladder.
That is assuming Draxim does not tie him up.

Kezib looks at those that are trying to hash out a plan. Kezib ponders for a second then pipes up "What if the ladder breaks, what then. It would prove climbing the stairs most difficult, do you all not agree? I personally think that we should save the ladder." Kezib says looking around.
[OOC: Is there another door in this room?]

"If the ladder breaks I have a spell which will fix it."
He forgives the wounded monk for not paying attention.
"Honestly, the only thing to lose is a little pride. I'm not afraid of that. Let's see if it can hold."
Meneloss continues with his test.
[obviously his test is taking place over the steps not the chasm]

Re: Two....two spells...hahahahahaha!
With three or four feet of the ladder under the weighty butts of Draxim, Ruglan and Ruig, Meneloss jumps up and grasps the nearest rung from below. The ladder is of relatively sturdy construction and only groans a little as the elf monkeys his way down its length. Meneloss reaches the last rung and looks over his shoulder with a goofy grin on his face.

On three?
With Meneloss hanging in the air, Draxim looks at the rest of his companions sitting on the ladder with an evil grin. "I feel like a little walk. How about you gents? Shall we stretch our legs a bit? I feel we have been sitting far too long!"
Draxim makes little preparing-to-get-up motions.

Monkey Man Meneloss
Still sitting on the stairs, Atan claps for the jubilent Meneloss, "Very well, you sold me Quende. We can give it a try tommorow if that is when you wish."
Standing up he stretchs his legs and arms, "So, how do the rest of us cross and I don't recall how much rope we have?"

Re: Monkey Man Meneloss
Meneloss monkeys back to the stair and though try as he might, he cannot keep from smiling at his initial success.
He says to Atan trhough his trademark crooked grin "I wish I had wagered an ale on this old ladder!" Getting down to business he continues "I have 30 feet of rope left. Draxim you have nearly seventy feet left yes? And Madragar you have 25 feet left."

Re: Monkey Man Meneloss
Atan points at the ladder, "Just make sure there is a safety line on the ladder, we certanly don't want to lose it. That item is actually importent."
"So I assume it is settled. We will try and swing Meneloss across in the morning using the ladder. The ladder will be secured by the stout figures of Draxim, Ruig and Kezib. Madragar, Ruglan and I can hold the safety line. If Sangraal is up he can help who ever needs it. Once across Meneloss can scout. One thing I am not sure is, how are we going to get all of us across with out hammering a spike or something?

Re: Monkey Man Meneloss loves ladders
"If we want to get everyone across, We can make a bridge using the ladder." He takes his paper and continues with his scribblings and draws another crude diagram "I think we have to use spikes in any case if we are going to get the rest across."
[Since spikes are a problem forget this. We need a hammer drill and some lag bolts and lead shields. Hmm is there a Home Depot in Moagara anywhere?]

Re: Monkey Man Meneloss loves ladders
[Spikes will be a problem. There are very few seams in the construction of this place. There are no bricks, and very little joining material. Koraeus apparently carved much of this place directly from the stone of the mountain. The ledge itself is a single, continuous slab.]

Re: Monkey Man Meneloss loves ladders
"The only way I can see doing this is by sending over the lightest person after Meneloss, the heaviest people go in the middle followed by a light person again and then who ever is the anchor. Ideally the anchor should be someone strong. The safety line will have to be held by whoever is available, if we use one. Strong risk of injury on this one."
