Re: Old Kurlew, Part IV
After Draxim quietly informs the rest of the group, and encourages them all to maintain as much silence as possible from here on, he suggests to Atan "Perhaps we should move up to the entrance to the hall as quietly as possible with bows ready. I'll check it out a little closer once I know I have some support."

1. how far is it to the place where Draxim heard the noise from the group's current location?

[About 150 feet, maybe more.]

2. could any of the group's torchlight be seen from where Draxim heard the noise?

[Draxim was in the center of the northern hall and could barely see the glimmer of the party's lantern to the south though the archway.]

3. Could Draxim hear the group from where he heard the noise?

[No.]

Re: Old Kurlew, Part IV
Atan smiles at Draxims report. Motioning with his hand he brings the group into a quick huddle. Quietly whispering, "We are going to investigate this metal noise. Draxim will scout ahead again." Turning to face the brave scout, "Head towards the noise. Come back if you see a light source. Then we will put out our lights and you and Ruig will guide us to them."

As Draxim once again sets out, Atan points at the ladder, "Leave that here for now against the wall, out of the way. We can come back to get it later. Draxim will lead Meneloss and me in front for we are the quietest. Ruig will lead Madragar followed by Ruglan, Sangraal and Kezib. Just put your left hand on the collar of the man in front of you and move cautiously. Missilers will shoot and then fall back behind the main line if we engage. Above all we must be quiet as possible. Any pre-casting of your arcane magicks can be done once Draxim returns with more information. If we find the legionaire and he wants to fight, stay away, use missles and Madragar.....drop burning oil on him."

Atan takes off his pack and places it by the ladder. Ensuring an arrow is nocked he stands in silence and awaits the scouts return.

[While we are waiting Atan will focus on listening for Draxim. (listen +6)]

Re: Old Kurlew, Part IV
Meneloss agrees with Atan's plan by simply noding his head.

He removes his pack, yet is careful to keep his scroll-case slung across his back. He places it next to Atan's.

He reflexivly grasps his borrowed javelin. His breathing becomes more rapid and sweat begins to bead on his forehead. In the dim torchlight, his pupils dialate even more and his pale skin is flushed.
Adrenaline is coursing through his veins. He wets his already dry mouth with a last sip of water before he places the waterskin down.

"Now we will learn more of this mystery, or perish trying." He says to nobody in particular.

[Meneloss is ready and waiting for Draxim's return, and he too is straining to hear the quiet scufflings of his brawny yet dexterous friend: Listen +5]

Re: Old Kurlew, Part IV
[The group is generally in the middle of the main hall, about twenty feet south of the ruined table. Where do you plan on storing the ladder and your packs?]

Draxim again disappears into the darkness. Atan listens for his footfalls, but it isn't long before they vanish into the cold, subterranean gloom. The ranger surmises that without the treachery of dry leaves and broken twigs to crunch underfoot it would be quite easy to remain silent while moving through these stoney halls.

Draxim returns to the northern chamber. He creeps along the western wall as he approaches the archway, moving slowly around each semi-circular column. Clang... scrape... the sounds continue, and they clearly are not being made by anyone trying to remain silent.

The stout scout reaches the archway and hazards a brief peek around the lintel. The hallway extends forty feet or so to the west where it opens into another chamber. There are three figures in the room, one of which is holding a torch high above. As none of the three seem to be looking in his direction, Draxim takes another, longer, look.

Three broo are in the chamber ahead. One of them stands in the center of the semi-circular chamber with an axe in one hand and a torch in the other. Nearby a second broo is standing on a wide stone dias above which rises yet another tall statue. The room has several of these statues, each standing shoulder to shoulder around the circumfurance of the room. The broo on the dias wields a massive stone mallet... not a weapon really, but the sort of tool one might use to drive in large stakes. The broo is hauling back and hammering chunks out of whatever part of the statue it can reach.

To the right of both broo is another, its head propped against another stone dias, its spear across its lap. The broo appears to be asleep.

Draxim hurredly returns to the group.

[GM, your descriptions are precice and accurate, however my brain is somehow not able to visualize them in realtion to the whole complex. -maybe it is all the 'cid I did as a kid?- Anyhoo is it possible for a map upadate? ]

When Draxim returns, Meneloss is relieved to see the safe return of the doughty dwarf. He whispers to those present:

"Only three? It would seem wise if we silent few kill them with our missiles. Though if we could bring more weight to bear upon them, our chances will be a lot better and our dispatchment of the beasts would be that much faster. What say you Atan?"

[I take it that we are in the middle chamber, there?]

[Middle chamber, yes. The one that is to the west of the secret door. -GM]

Kezib whispers to the group "That was all that Draxim saw. There may be more lurking around the corner. Any way we can get a better determination of their numbers?"

Madragar quietly lays down both pack and ladder, checks his crossbow and wishes he could cast spells silently. He waits for Atan's signal.

Re: Fine!
Atan face shows interest at the comment of one broo sleeping while the other wails away on the statues with a mallet. Trap?

Quick whispers, "This sounds almost too good. Either way once we kill them get ready for more and stay quiet. Meneloss has got an idea. Me, Meneloss, Draxim and Madragar take the lead with missile weapons. Once at the torch light edge we will shoot simultaneously. Mad and Me on the torch bearer. Men and Draxim on the mallet. If we are quiet enough the last Broo may not wake. The rest of the group should stay forty feet back from us, ready to charge if we can't take them quickly. Listen for my whistle as your go order."

"Good?" Atan gives his thumbs up. "Line up in the two rows discussed earlier. Grab a collar of the guy in front and move slowly. Alright Ruglan, Kezib. Kill the light."

[Move silently +8, Listen +7 vs broo, Spot +7 vs broo,
bow: +5 to hit (+6 within 30 feet), 1d6 (+1 within 30 feet / +1 vs. Broo 30 feet / +1d6 vs Broo), critical x3]

[Joyner resend, didn't get it.]

Hammer time
[Got it the note - plan still works if we can get close enough. Hopefully all their loud noise will help us.]

[Remember, broo can see in the dark as well as elves... that is, twice as far under torchlight, or about 40 feet. -GM]

[That is what I thought. Hmmm, actually the rest of the party should be 20 feet behind, close enough to allow them to charge.]

Re: Hammer time
Sangraal looks to Draxim and them whispers " why don't we let Draxim move up silently, and take out the sleeping broo. Then once he had attacked the missile weapons can open up. Try to take all three out at once."

[OOC: THis is a situation that screams for a thief to try and sneak up first.]

Re: Hammer time
[Draxim would have to enter the fully lit room. I think he would stand out. Plus he can still get his sneak attack with a missile weapon right?]

[Just checked PHB. Draxim has got to be within 30 feet for sneak attack. The four of us will play it by ear. If the Broo are not paying attention and we can sneak to within 30 feet, great! If not we can still make our attacks and hopefully roll high inititives for the first round. so we may conceivably kill them with missile weapons. As long as our luck holds out.;) ]

Re: Hammer time
"Don't call me Mad," says the tattooed mage, frowning.

"If the broo have an advantage over us with sight, we have one over them of wisdom and forethought. Can we not instead lure them here? Kill them as they come through that door?"

"Our swordsmen may hide here in the corners near the door where they will not be seen. Those of us with missiles can wait back there, beyond the door. When Draxim alerts us, we can fire, and the warriors can rush in to quickly finish off the quarry."

Re: Hammer time
Atan shakes his head No. "We have seen them first and they do not know of us. To lure them this way we would need to alert them to our presence. Urox's fury, they may just run for reinforcements. We will take advantage of their noise and lack of posting a watch.", he whispers quickly, an edge of anticipation in his voice.

"And how, Atan, will you solve the conundrum of their superior vision in low-light?" Madragar whispers. "We cannot approach close enough to see them ere they have the chance to see us."

Re: Hammer time
Atan looks as if Madragar just asked if he could date his sister, "If we are in the dark with no light source and they have a light source we will be able to see them fine. Only if we choose to close with them can they see us. It's like a bunch of guys around a campfire and you are in the woods outside the firelight. You could shoot at them all night long and they can't see you. Just be careful trying to move around cause you can't see what is in front of you. That is why killing the torch holding broo is so important. Don't want our only light source running off."
