Magic man!
"How is this door locked?" Sangraal exclaims.

Sangraal invokes a prayer of Finding, his free hand making subtle gestures in the tourch light.

[OOC: Detect Magic - scan the whole room for magic. Any magic found Sangraal spends time concentrating on it to get more info.]

Re: how subtle
Sangraal's eyes blaze with supernatural brilliance for a split second, and he slowly turns, taking in the entire hall and (depending on the thickness of the wooden walls) the rooms beyond.

Ruglan, sword and shield in hand, utters a barbaric grunt as he puts his foot onto the nearest door. The portal's hinges are of sturdy construction, however, and his efforts are fruitless. The loud thump echoes through the hall but the boisterous tavern beyond the double doors drowns out the worst of the sound.

Re: how subtle
"We need the skills of our friends Draxim and Sal'el to get through this door. Check the others!"

Ulwe utters a prayer invoking his patron the chief of the Lightbringers.
Soon his spear head glows with a brilliant light.

"I want to be sure of the downstairs."

He then heads down the creaky wooden steps to get a further look .

Re: how subtle
Ruglan checks for a latch handle on the door he just tried to kick in.

... and finds it too is locked [-GM]. The handle, in fact, moves but the door does not, probably indicating it is barred from the inside.

Magic, magic everywhere, not a drop to drink.
[OOC: I quick glance will tell Sangraal if anything is magical. If he does find anything magical then he'll look closer at the object found. So maybe 15 seconds to do a 360 degree turn.]

Re: how subtle
"Someone must be in there if the door is barred from the inside," says Ruglan. "Perhaps if two of us give it a try?"

Re: how subtle
Madragar doubts that his own frame will add much to Ruglan's burly efforts, but he is intent on getting through that door, and so he does his best to help.

"One moment," he says, and intones the odd sounds of the Charm of Protection (Mage Armor).

Then, "Okay, let's go." He follows the warrior's lead.

[Aid Another Action. If Madragar succeeds at a Str check of DC 10, he will add +2 to Ruglan's attempt to breach the door's bar.]

Re: how subtle
[Actually a quick glance won't tell Sangraal anything. It takes 1 round (6 seconds) to determine if anything is magical in each 90 degree arc. So, it will take Sangraal 24 seconds to scan the area. It's all in the PHB.]

As Ulwe takes his first cautious steps down the stairs, Madragar and Ruglan brace themselves for impact.

"On three," Ruglan mumbles. Madragar puts his weight behind Ruglan's shoulder, poised to rush at the stubborn barrier. "One," Ruglan begins. "Two," Ruglan continues...

The greatly anticipated three never arrives. For a moment Madragar and Ruglan stand frozen in time, staring at the wooden door. The tatooed wizard glances over at his companion.

"Three?" he asks, but there is no response. Ruglan, sword and shield at the ready, stands motionless.

Scanning
Sangraal steps to the middle of the room and scans the area starting at the door in which Bucket came out of.

"Shes still here" Sangraal says softly.

[OOC: Detect magic: 1 round on the 90 degree arc containing the door Bucket came out of.]

Re: Scanning
Sangraal is about half-way through his mystic inspection of the hall, and still hasn't detected any magic beyond the glow of his own flail, when he turns toward the far end of the passage.

[Note to Sangraal.]

Re: Scanning
"Ruglan?" asks Madragar, giving the warrior a shake on the arm. "Ruglan!"

"Sangraal, Ulwe, something's happened to Ruglan. We need to get him -and us- out of here right now."

"Sangraal, talk to me. What do you see?"

The wizard looks about for the nearest other exit. Windows?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Player's Note to GM: Scott, the shake of Ruglan's arm may waken him from a magically-induced trance.]
Re: Scanning
Ulwe halfway dowstairs hears Madragar's plea.
He thrusts the spear out in front of him to get a better look of the basement.
After he is certain there are no lurkers hidind downstairs, he will rush to Ruglan's side to see what's the matter.
Re: Scanning
Ulwe can be certain of nothing. He espies the rotting cellar walls less than ten feet to the east, north and south, but the subterranean chamber extends off to the west beneath the stairs and he can't get a good look as to what lurks in the dark shadows beneath the tavern.
Madragar gives Ruglan's arm a shake but the warrior is totally motionless, staring at the door. The bald wizard scans the hall for a way out and finds no windows. Five doors and a staircase will have to do.
Sangraal, at last, finishes his sweep of the corridor.
[Note to Sangraal.]
As Ulwe emerges from the stairway and approaches Ruglan, a grey beam slices through the murk just inches from his head and streaks down the hall toward Sangraal. It strikes the unsuspecting priest in the back as he focuses his attention at the double doors that lead back into the tavern.
Sangraal lets out a cry of alarm and shock, his flail dropping to the ground with a clang. Lurching forward, Sangraal leans heavily on the double doors but has no obvious wounds.
[Note to Sangraal and Madragar.]
Re: Scanning
[can Ulwe tell where the ray came from?]
[Not exactly, but it seemed to travel the length of the hall from the east end to the west. I'll provide a map shortly. -GM]
Check the doors!
Ulwe steps to the door on the Northern side of the East end of the hallway. He gives it a good solid kick. (str 13).
