Re: Check the doors!
Ulwe takes two giant steps and puts his travel-worn boot into the door, which surprisingly flies right open. A shaft of light from his illuminated spear lances through the room revealing that it is about fifteen feet on a side and contains a table and several chairs. There is a door on the far side which looks like it might lead to the alley.

Re: Check the doors!
Staggering under the sudden burden of his studded leather armor Sangraal leans wearly against the wall.
"The door" he points weakly towards the door doors leading into the tavern " bear an enchantment of some type, a magic of holding maybe."

Dazed and Confused
[Mr. GM, sir, I'm lost! Or I might be. Am I correct when I think that the double doors on the west end of the hall are where we came from (i.e., the tavern?) and that Ulwe now stands on the north side of the corridor, in front of the eastern door?]
Madragar considers hauling Ruglan bodily through the door that Ulwe has opened, but the mental image of himself struggling to inch the big warrior across the field of combat squelches that idea. His remaining offensive spell, a firestarter, seems like a bad idea, also.
So, on a hunch, he fires his crossbow into the northeastern corner of the hall, from where he conjectures a hidden sorcerer might have fired the spell that laid Sangraal low.
"Ulwe!" he cries. "Help me move Ruglan out of here."

Re: Dazed and Confused
[Correct on both counts.]
Madragar fires off his crossbow but the bolt simply buries itself in the corner of the corridor, punching deep into the wooden wall.

Re: Dazed and Confused
Barely able to stand Sangraal sadly abandons his flail and moves to the now open door.
"I feel as if I bear the wieght of a thousand stones." his breath heavy and labored from the short distence traveled.

Re: Dazed and Confused
"Can you walk?" asks Madragar? "I've got to move Ruglan."
Screw it, thinks Madragar. I'm jumping at the unseen. I've got to get my team out of here while we're still alive, instead of buried in a storm drain, the likely fate of Atan and Draxim.
He gets his shoulder under the big warrior's arm and heaves, dragging him toward the door that Ulwe has opened.

Re: Dazed and Confused
[Atan and Kezib... Kezib!]
Madragar hauls Ruglan through the open door, mindful not to get skewered by the watchman's gleaming Ghurugil blade still held fast in his motionless grip. Sangraal stumbles through right behind him, his breathing heavy and his body stooped under the sudden weight of his armor.
The room is bare except for a well worn table and the five simple chairs surrounding it. A narrow wooden door is set into the north wall of the room and bears a simple iron handle.

Re: Dazed and Confused
Ulwe takes rear-guard waiting until the paralyzed form of Ruglan is ushered through the doorway.
Once the group is inside he keeps a watch to the hallway they just left.
Over his shoulder he calls out to Sangraal and Madragar:
"Try that door, I think it leads to the outside!"

Re: Dazed and Confused
Waving off the concerned mage " Thank you Madragar, I can move under my own legs.
"Shut the door Ulwe, lets baracade it." Sangraal wobbles over and begins moving the table towards Ulwe.
" In this state I doubt I could outrun pursurers."

Re: Dazed and Confused
Sangraal hobbles over to a spot behind the square table and pushes with all his might. Madragar quickly drags Ruglan off to the eastern side of the room to get out of the eager priest's way, but it turns out not to be necessary. Sangraal leans against the table but is so weak he only manages to move it a few inches.

Re: Dazed and Confused
[Wait a minute. Kezib's missing too?] ;-)
"We cannot stay here," says Madragar, dragging Ruglan toward the door indicated by Ulwe. "We'll be quickly surrounded."
Despite his physical labor, the tattooed wizard finds time to conjecture as to the mystery of their attacker. "It is possible that the door itself was trapped with the magic which hit both Ruglan and Sangraal, but I think not. Such would be the work of a mage of power, indeed."
"More likely that our assailant was hidden. Sangraal detected no magical presence, and thus invisibility is unlikely. Besides, from what little I know of that charm, it would render its user visible the moment he attacked. No, I think their must have been an assailant there - the same that created the illusion of the dwarf-maid. Perhaps he was hidden within a compartment secreted within the walls, or spied upon us through an unseen loop within the doors."
"No matter. We are overmatched, and we must retreat."

Re: Dazed and Confused
Ulwe nods to Madragar's last words.
His days as serving under a sea captain taught him the use of curt orders to convey his thoughts and shouts:
"Aye! Get that door open and lets be gone, Now!"
[after kicking in the door, is it damaged?]
[No, the door was ajar so simply swung open when Ulwe kicked it. - GM]

Re: Dazed and Confused
Still thinking about the mystery of the ambush, Madragar drags Ruglan to the door, sets him down and heaves upon the door (after trying the knob, if any).

Re: Dazed and Confused
Ulwe peers out into the hallway while waiting for his companions to retreat through the opposite door in their new room.
He looks for any sign in the paneling some betrayal of a doorway or portal. A crack where is should not be, a worn spot or a discoloration in the wood...

Re: Dazed and Confused
Madragar heaves the motionless form of Ruglan against a wall and grasps the iron handle of the door. Noticing that the hinges are on the inside, the bald mage gives the portal a pull... and finds the handle comes right out of the door. Madragar suffers a moment of dismay, staring down at the useless iron L in his hands, before noticing the sticky substance that now coats the inside of his palm. The door itself has not budged.
Ulwe scans the corridor and quickly notices a few knots and cracks that could be used by someone beyond the eastern wall to spy on those in the hallway. He has little time to consider these loopholes, however, as the door on the opposite side of the passage flies open. The agile elf swiftly turns to face this new threat and barely gets his shield up in time to block an incoming crossbow bolt. The missile punches through the layers of wood and leather, but goes no further.
Ulwe is not so lucky against a second bolt which tears through leather armor and flesh alike as it strikes his right side. Spitting out a torrent of sailor's curses (in elvish, of course) Ulwe staggers back into the room trailing blood.
With a voice like gravel tumbling down a drain pipe, Dalam beams "this... is a great day." The brutish thug stands to the south with a now empty heavy crossbow. Another man kneels before him, expended crossbow in his grasp, and reaches back for another missile.

Re: Dazed and Confused
Sangraal moves to the door and attempts to shut it. Throwing his tired wieghted against it he barricades the bdoor with his own body.
"We need time... but how?" he looks around the room.

Re: Dazed and Confused
Sangraal swings the door shut and leans heavily against it (leaning heavily is one of the few things he can do well at this point). His eyes dart from side to side, looking for something to brace against the wooden portal, but finds nothing but the table and chairs. They appear relatively sturdy, but aren't heavy enough to hold the door shut against a determined foe.

Re: Dazed and Confused
At the sound of that voice, Madragar ignores his palm and the false door. Twin waves fear and loathing wash over him like physical blows.
Madragar expected the trap. Expected betrayal from "Kreillah". But in no way did he suspect the involvement of his hated enemy and tormentor.
Where other men might boil over in anger, Madragar instead goes ice cold, standing still in a quiet rage of thought. If the man had followed him to Raven's Gate, that means he knew of Vala's haven, too.
"The door is false," he announces to his companions "or broken."
Stepping to Ulwe's side, he whispers "My only remaining offensive spell is a gout of flame. Let me stand before you when the door opens."
"Sangraal," he suggests, "perhaps you'd like to see if you can open that door after all...the hinges?"
