Might as well go out loaded for bear, thinks Madragar, and quickly intones the syllables of two last spells, then moves to seize the table, trying to shoulder most of its weight.
"Let's go."

"Sangraal, get ready to open the door and then get behind the table with Madragar."
Ruglan looks at Ulwe, "Ready?"
Shield in a guard position, sword poised for a strike, Ruglan waits for all to be ready to open the door.

Pale and sweating, Madragar puts the table back down and sways a bit on his feet.
"It's now or never. The door handle was poisoned. Let's go."

Return of the...
Sangraal grabs the door and hurls it open with all the strength he can muster. Ruglan and Ulwe, shoulder to shoulder, push through the door, their weapons poised to deal out death and mayhem to anyone within reach. Both warriors, anticipating the sudden shock of crossbow bolts puncturing their wooden bulwark, huddle down behind their shields.
The hall is empty. The four other doors leading from the corridor are all closed again. There is no trace of Druuga or his accomplice. After taking a few strides, Ruglan and Ulwe stop with the staggering Sangraal and Madragar right behind them.
As Ulwe raises his gleaming speartip to shed the light of the Wind God toward the shadowy staircase, he espies a ragged human shape come lurching out of the dark. He is a young man, bald, and wearing the simple traveller's clothes of a Sekastian monk, though they are stained with dried blood and other unknown stains, particularly around his abdomen.
Kezib leans against the corner of the stairs, teetering on the top step, his head downcast, a bit of saliva dripping from his open mouth. He appears to have been savagely beaten and is near unconsciousness.

[Note that Madragar also has Detect Magic up]
"Keep moving!" he rasps out. "Open a door. Use a glove; do not touch any surface!"
He lurches toward the door opposite the one they have abandoned.
"Either Druuga is here, or one very informed, very powerful illusionist. Either way, we must leave now."

Re: Return of the...
[Madragar has to concentrate for one full round to determine if anything is magical in his field of view.]
The bald mage lurches toward the door from which Druuga and his companion fired their bolts, but finds it locked tight.
"He's dead," Kezib whispers, almost inaudibly. "He's dead..."

"Kezib come to me!"
Ulwe transfers his spear to his shield hand. He holds out his right hand with his palm facing outwards.
As the staggering monk crosses to Ulwe, the sea-elf calls upon his patron for a final miricle:
"I am a humble vessel of your power Orlanth, please Heal this child of the Sun."
[cure lt wounds on Kezib D8+1]

"Kezib! Thank the Storm God you are alive! Where's Atan?" asks Ruglan.
Ruglan watches the hallway and the double doors leading back out to the common area. He continues to maintain a guarded stance.

Re: Return of the...
[Sangraal's flail is right where he left it, down at the western end of the hall near the double doors. As for detect magic, check yer notes.]
Kezib staggers forward towards Ulwe, nearly collapsing to the ground as he covers the last few feet. The monk grasps the elf's outstretched hand and tries to steady himself, leaning against the edge of Ulwe's shield.
As the priest of Orlanth begins his chant, Kezib stares past Ulwe's shoulder at the familiar face of Sangraal.
"He's dead, Sangraal," Kezib whispers, the last syllables slithering into an angry hiss. In a heartbeat the monk's voice seems transformed from that of man, to that of something entirely unnatural. A foul grin passes of Kezib's face as the shock of recognition stops Sangraal's heart cold. A supernatural chill rises out of the shadows and fills the hall with the deep frost of tomb-haunted death.
"Ulwe is dead..."
Hot crimson blood splashes over Sangraal's chest and face as Kezib's fist punches through Ulwe's torso. The elf's prayer dies on his lips, fine spear and shield crashing to the ground, followed swiftly by Ulwe's limp, bleeding form.

Re: Return of the...
Scrambling backwards Sangraal wipes a sleeve arcoss his eyes and face as events slow to a mind numbing buzz. Ulwes eyes, a brillent hue even in death, stare emptily at the air. The pressing chill of darkness crashs in, causing Sangraal to gasp involentarily.
"Alley man........." he chatters as he reaches for his flail.
[OOC: Note to GM before next action. By the way this is post 666 in this discussion. So I figured a horrified movie moment was approperate]

"What the...?" sputters Ruglan.
Ruglan turns to see Ulwe on the ground and Kezib's bloody fist.
"Still using your trickery on us, you bastard!? How will it work against my steel!?"
Ruglan charges what appears to be Kezib and attacks.

N...F...W
[Sweet Jumpin' Jehosophat, that was brutal!]
Madragar is equally appalled, but he has the opposite reaction to Sangraal's. Cold Fury.
"Burn, you son of a bitch" he says.
If he can go before Ruglan closes with "Kezib", Madragar will let loose with a fan of magical flames (Burning Hands). If not, he will hold his action, back against the wall.

Re: N...F...W
[Though I am loathe to temper to sudden horror of the moment, I have replaced "Ulwe's limp, dead body" above with "Ulwe's limp, bleeding body." I miscalculated what was necessary to kill the elf outright. Suffice to say, however, that Ulwe isn't feeling well.]
Sangraal scrambles back to the western end of the hall and picks up his trusty flail.
[Random roll... Madragar reacts quicker than Ruglan.]
The mage holds out both hands in the characteristic fan shape of an apprentice's most destructive spell. A sheet of flame roars out from his fingertips at chest level, engulfing Kezib (and most of the eastern end of the hall) in its flickering embrace.
Kezib screams, but more in surprise than in pain. His clothes smoulder, but the creature shoulders the brunt of the attack and turns on Ruglan, fingers outstretched.
The townwatchman lashes out with his perfect Ghurugil blade, burying the weapon in Kezib's abdomen. No blood spurts around the ragged wound, and the hideous thing simply laughs in Ruglan's face in deep, supernatural tones.
Kezib suddenly grasps Ruglan by the wrist, blade still buried in the creature's torso, its other hand grabbing the watchman by the collar. The Sekastian performs one of the brutal throws he demonstrated on Sangraal many times in their youth, but this time it is with a strength altogether unnatural.
Sangraal dives for cover as Ruglan goes airborne, flying a full fifteen feet down the corridor before striking the double doors. With an intensely loud CRACK! the enchantment on the door is broken, and Ruglan smashes through the portal and into the tavern beyond. The thick oaken doors are torn from their hinges and are carried along with him, smashing into the back of Bucket who was apparently standing just a few feet away. The behemoth is taken completely by surprise and hits the ground as well.
[Go to The Battle of Potters Row.]
