Re: Notes from the GM
The two men carrying Atan keep up the pretense of helping a drunken friend get away from the mad monk until they make it into a dark alleyway. Atan, his eyes staring down onto the street, can't see anything but their muddy boots. In the deep darkness of the alley the men dump him on the ground, bits of rock and mud smashing into Atan's face. Moments later he is propped up against a rain barrel and beaten mercilessly by the two thugs. Though he cannot move, the elf can feel every ounce of pain his captors are delivering, and soon slips into unconsciousness.

[Thanks for the well written detail of my pummeling. Does this mean new character time? - Halle]

Re: Notes from the GM
Atan wakes up briefly when he is thrown callously to the ground. He feels cold hard flagstones smash into his shoulder and chest. His arms and feet are tied and he can just barely see the glint of a torch through a burlap sack that has been thrown over his head.

He hears voices...

"Tomorrow morning at first light. No excuses. If I see you in town after that I'll come after you myself." The voice is derisive, words spoken to an underling. It is male, and has a dwarven edge though Atan cannot tell for certain.

"Yea, that was the deal." Atan doesn't recognize this voice either.

There is the sound of coins in a bag being passed from hand to hand, then retreating footsteps. The torch goes with them and Atan's brain decides that it would be a good time to sleep...

Torture
Atan wakes up, though he can't see a thing. He seems to be laid out on a wide plank of wood, blindfolded and with his limbs held down with leather straps. He is entirely immobile.

Moments after regaining consciousness the throbbing pain of his injuries rush in on Atan's weary brain. His head is one big bruise from repeated blows, and he can feel crust of dried blood on his face. Atan is also quite cold, and wherever he is it is very damp.

It isn't long before Atan hears the sound of movement in the room. Without speaking someone approaches jams a finger in Atan's nose, twisting violently. Atan cries out in pain, unable to control the urge.

"He's awake," someone says in a deep, slow voice. Then comes the rattling of chains and the board on which Atan is tied lowers as if pivoting at the end that is near his feet. Atan's head descends until he feels the icy rush of water pour into his ears. His head is entirely submerged as he struggles in vain to free himself. Suddenly a massive fist is brought down onto his abdomen and Atan reflexively gulps for air, but gets a lung full of water instead.

The board is raised and Atan coughs and sputters violently. Yet, only seconds later he is thrust down into the frigid water again, then raised, then down into the water a third time. Atan's mind is swimming with delirium and pain. His lungs ache from the cold water, and his body shivers uncontrollably from the icy bath.

A cold voice whispers just inches from his ear. "Make it easy on yourself. Tell me of your companions, and all you know of Old Kurlew."

Re: Torture
Atan coughs and sputters, "Stop.....STOP!" His body convulses and he thrashes about ineffectively. Calming himself, "OK....Ok. Old Kurlew is a really really big mountain with lots of rocks and big smelly Broo that stink like shit. I can tell some are in the room right now."

Re: Torture
WHAM! Some blunt object smashes down on the index and middle fingers of his right hand, shattering the bones into powder. The pain is so incredible Atan's mouth is open but the sound of screaming doesn't come for a few seconds. Before his mind fully registers the intense agony of his broken fingers he is thrust down into the frigid water again. Atan's scream is choked on the cold, brackish water and his own bile. His head throbbing with rushing blood, his hand feeling like a single exposed nerve, Atan breaks the surface again.

"Please, be honest. Tell me their names and what you found in Old Kurlew. I know you were there, and I know you came back from that place just yesterday. If you value the use of your hands..."

Re: Torture
"Yes.....Yes, I was there. I went with nine companions but I hardly know them. I only met them two weeks ago. I went to Old Kurlew to learn of what happened to the Merek Lek. They were going the same path so we traveled together. We entered the mountain and encountered a liegionairre and his dwarven ally. They were slaying Broo and in the process we ended up fighting him. Three of us were slain. The rest of us escaped badly hurt. We fled and it took us days to heal well enough to travel again. Since then we traveled back here. That is it. That is all. PLease stop, my hand...my hand.", his words come out high and shrill, an edge of panic in his voice.

Re: Torture
"Ah, that's better."

Atan feels a big, meaty hand grasp his broken fingers. The slightest pressure from that powerful grip makes Atan writhe in agony, but for the moment his mangled fingers are not squeezed too tightly. He knows, however, that a world of pain is only a moment away.

"Now, tell me about the tatooed one... the wizard called Madragar. And tell me everything you saw in Old Kurlew. Leave nothing out."

Re: Torture
"Madragar......I know little. He is a mage's apprentice I think. Has a girlfriend that he has hidden away. Hidding her from someone he is scared of. That is about as much as I know. Old Kurlew was little more then what I told you. The 3-way fight between the legionairre, broo and us ended in our route and the broo were all slain I believe. We fled from the legionairre and rested to heal our wounds before eventually returning here. We never fully explored Old Kurlew."

[Atan is trying to get a look at his captors and trying (through the pain) to pick out anything descriptive of his captors. Accents, speech pattern, smells etc...]

Re: Torture
[Unfortunately Atan is blindfolded.]

"You're a bad liar, elf."

Atan hears screaming, and it is several seconds before he realizes that it is his own. The merciless hand grinds his broken bones together for what seems like an eternity. Atan writhes against his restraints but can do nothing but endure the pain. Finally the grip is released and Atan is left moaning, gasping for air.

"I'm going to give you something now. Something to think about. We'll talk again tomorrow."

Atan feels something slide behind his left knee, a brick maybe. Before he can protest, or fully prepare himself for what comes next, his knee erupts in an explosion of pain. He is sure his kneecap has been shattered. Atan screams.

Again he is lowered into the water, and given a long moment to wail his lungs out underwater before being raised again. With just the top of his head touching the icy water Atan is left there, suspended nearly upside-down and in the most incredible agony of his life. He hears the rattling of chains and then a door close.

Atan is alone.

Re: Torture
He cries.

[Once he is done sobbing he will try and test his bonds. Does he feel certain that he would be unable to walk based on his healing skill? (+4) If he can work loose he will try and look around and if he can walk try to escape.]

Re: Torture
Atan gives it his best, but the leather straps are thick and tight. He also suspects that they are fastened on the underside of the plank of wood, so untying himself is out of the question.

He is quite certain that he could not walk with his smashed knee, and that even if it was splinted it may never heal properly. The priests of Hroldi are the only ones that could repair such an injury.

[His head is touching the water? He will spend the majority of the night trying to keep it raised otherwise hypothermia is going to mess him up badly, maybe kill him before the next day.]

Re: Torture
Atan groans and shudders his way through the night, or at least a period of time that he thinks is night. It is a constant battle to keep his head above the water so as to prevent the icy bath from completely sapping his strength, or perhaps even killing him. The pain of his injuries and the lack of sleep take their toll on the imprisoned elf, and he can feel his resolve begin to unravel as he hears the door open and two pairs of shuffling feet enter the cold, dank chamber.

Re: Torture
Atan releases a whimpering groan in anticpation of what is sure to come. Find a small ounce of reserve he raises his bloodied and blindfolded head to face upward towards what he hopes is his captors, "For the love of Yelm you guys are a sight for sore eyes." With no more strength his head lolls back and rsplashes in the water, his breaths coming ragged and harsh.

Re: Torture
Atan hears a very deep, quiet chuckle at his gallows humor, but a moment later a sharp hiss silences it. The rattling of chains signals the raising of the plank of wood onto which he is tied until it is horizontal again.

The harsh whisper of his tormentor slithers into his ear.

"Tell me everything that happened within Old Kurlew."

Re: Torture
With genuine sincerity, his speech quivering and dulled by the cold, "G-g-g-guys. I can't escape..... my l-l-l-leg and arm are ruined, you have all the pow-power. J-j-just ask me exactly what you are looking for an-and-and I will tell you! What ever I know, I swear it! Pleeease..... don't dunk me! Please!" Atan cringes in anticipation for the blow he thinks will come for his bold repsonse.

Re: Torture
"I left him on the street but he was headed to meet his girlfriend. I know she has a job that a dwarf named Ruig got her. Madragar wants to hide her from somebody who is hunting him....I guess you, I think I heard him call the place Updock. He had planned on departing the morning after you captured me but may have stuck around looking for me. He wanted to go back up river towards Tunlura to search for clues to his master, Edrigan the Gold, or something like that. Ruig died in Old Kurlew so I don't know where he lived, but he worked for a group of dwarves called....sounds like it started with a C or K or something....some dwarvish word I could never say." Atan finally takes a breath after is long rambling answer, hoping beyond hope that this creul man's hand is stayed.

Re: Torture
Atan hears a sarcastic sigh ooze into his ear.

"I am losing my patience with you, elf. The truth is such a simple thing, and it is yours to give. You have only yourself to blame."

Atan feels his left hand suddenly pressed flat, then its fingers stretched out. Two blocks of wood descend around his (currently uninjured) hand. It is some kind of vise, for Atan can hear the squeeking of the screw tightening, and the blocks begin to crush his bones.

"You know the answer, elf. Tell me where to find Madragar?"

Re: Torture
Atan's head comes off the board screaming and sputtering, "Yelm's teeth! If you already know why are you torturing me? I gave you what I got! We were with the dwarves and he was with his girlfriend. Where she is staying, I don't know! He could be anywhere by this point." Tears of frustration well up and flood out under the blindfold to mix with the cold bath water, "Please stop, don't do this!"

Re: Torture
"You disappoint me, elf."

Without another word, and thankfully without inflicting any more pain on Atan, the two torturers leave the room. The door clangs shut behind them and Atan is left in a world of agony with no sign of relief.

It isn't long before his hunger and thirst begin to rise up through the terrible wounds that have been inflicted to him. His knee throbs with every move he makes, both his hands feel like they are filled with broken pottery. Soon he finds himself moaning a weeping uncontrollably.

[So, how far is Atan willing to go? Is there a limit to his defiance, or his attempts to mislead in the face of permanent disfigurement? It's possible that Atan will at some point lose control and spill his guts regardless (based on his Will save). Would he allow the torture to go that far? If he holds out indefinitely, would he rather die than succumb to his tormentors?]
