Re: Torture
[OK. I've never tried to run this kind of situation before, so it's a little weird. As a PC, Atan has a lot more control over what happens to him than an NPC would, so the progress and conclusion of the torture is essentially for him to decide.]

Re: Torture
Atan hears the closing of the cell door, and the rattling of chains outside.

Re: Torture
[Just as a reminder Atan will continue to try and listen to see if he can figure out where he is. When his bonds are wet he will try and stretch the leather (ie escape). Try and peek under the blindfold etc.....]

Re: Torture
Between the sounds of his own moaning, Atan strains to hear any sounds coming from outside his cell. He can hear nothing at all, however, and assumes that he's underground.
His bonds are made of thick, wide loops of leather. His wrist and elbow are both tied securely to the plank of wood, as are his ankles and knees. Another band wraps around his chest. It seems that his tormentors know their work well.

Re: Torture
Atan wakes up, or at least he thinks he slept. Some amount of time passed, but his fitful sleep was far from refreshing. His hand and knee both scream into his consciousness, the pain of those injuries bringing back all the unpleasant memories of the last day. He can feel the leg of his trouser stretch outward from his grotesquely swollen knee, even the slightest movement paralyzing Atan with agony.
The sound of chains and the opening door come soon thereafter and without a word Atan's tormentors return. He can hear metal scraping on stone not far from where he is laying and soon smells the odor, and feels the heat, of a small coal fire.

Re: Torture
Audibly sniffing the air, Atan cranes his head left to right trying to find the direction that the coal brazier is located. With worry in voice, "I don't suppose you boys brought that in to ward off the chill did you?"
Resting his head back down he winces, lights exploding unseen in his head, as his hand and knee throb mercilessly with pain. He truly does not relish what is sure to come next and begins to weep.

Re: Torture
His tormentors say nothing as they stoke the fire and, surely, get some iron implement to a flesh-searing temperature. Finally that malevolent hiss slithers its way back into Atan's ear.
"Now tell me, where can I find Madragar?"

Re: Torture
His will slipping, Atan tries to negotiate, "How do I know you just won't kill me if I tell you?"

Re: Torture
Atan's tunic is suddenly ripped open and his chest explodes in pain as the fiery brand is laid against his skin. As he screams the hot iron is rolled back and forth, filling the air with the sound and smell of sizzling flesh.

"Nooooooo, stop stop stop........ he is with the Ghurugil! Please stop!" Atan obviously does not like to be burned.

Re: Torture
[Who does?]
The brand is instantly removed from his skin, though the sizzling continues for a few seconds.
"Very good. Indeed he is with the Ghurugil. Now tell me everything about your journey to Old Kurlew."

Re: Torture
For many minutes the only sound is the guttural babbling of a man weeping uncontrollably. Slowly he calms himself and as he formulates his words for the story of Old Kurlew he takes some small pleasure in delivering the bad news to the worshippers of Chaos.
Starting with the departure from the city, Atan goes into detail about the parties travel to Old Kurlew including the climb up the side of the mountain and the discovery of the tortured Merek Lek bodies. Briefly glossing over the secret door leading down to Koreus' chamber, he then describes the death of Yimris in the fight with the Broo, the legionairre and the dwarf. Then he quickly washes by the three days waiting on the stairs followed up with the ambush of the three Broo desacrating statues. Lastly, he tells of the final battle at the Pit of Slaeg Gnara."....and I put so many arrows in to Gulkhu he mewwed like a stuck calf. Finally, it was Ruglan Brooslayer that spitted him on his blade and Dark Eye gave up the ghost. So my friends the pit remains closed." As the story ends Atan seems relaxed but with the sudden quiet of the torture chamber he beings to shift uncomfortably in is bonds.
[OK Atan is broken (litteraly) but still trying to minimize through ommision. The major facet of the story that he leaves out is the Door (the one with the gods and stuff). He also leaves out details of the party members personal lives (like surnames if he knows them). ]

Re: Torture
Only once do Atan's tormentors encourage his honesty with the application of the searing iron. They listen in silence, and between his shallow breaths Atan can hear the scratch of quill on parchment nearby. His keen hearing detects the breathing of two people nearby, so the writer must be a third.
"Now, tell me of the treasure elf. We found plenty of gold in your bags. Where's the rest of it?"

Re: Torture
[Plenty? I had gone out for the night and certainly wouldn't have brought all my gold. The thieves would have been swarming like flies on me. I probably didn't take more the 5 or 6 gold.]
Atan laughs with little mirth, "Treasure? What we got was off the Broo and the rest was gear from the fallen. We had to flee as the new guardian returned. Our skins was our reward."

Re: Torture
[Ok, that's reasonable.]
The voice doesn't seem to like Atan's answer.
"Elf, I'm going to push this piece of burning metal through your cheek and out the other side. Do you expect me to believe that the hall of an ancient mountain giant had within its gates nothing of value, or that you returned with nothing? Last chance. Where is the treasure?"

Re: Torture
Atan, fully expecting a continuation of his malicious torturer's attention, hears the iron thrust back into the fire.
"Then tell me, elf, why did you go to Old Kurlew?"

"I went to learn of the Merek Lek's fate and what befell Koreus after the battle. Finding treasure was never my concern."
