Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VI
"This isn't Irigaal so don't use all your magic here!" yells Atan between arrow shots.
[rapid shot, +8/1d6+2 both, using over hang for cover]
[Not quite round 2 yet, but...]

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VI
Draxim comes stumbling back across the rubble strewn hall, drenched in Chaos-tainted blood and his right arm still smouldering. Janes joins the chorus of missiles singing upward toward the heaving mass of flesh. Soon thereafter Atan puts two more arrows in the beast, none of which seem to be having the slightest effect.
Then, inexplicably, the fleshy monster shudders and falls like a tornado-tossed butcher shop. The grotesque amalgam of meat strikes the floor with a disgusting splat and ruptures into a dozen pieces, sending blood and body parts everywhere.
Pogar just reaches the top of the stairs descending into the lower levels of the Fortress and, peering down the stairwell, sees nothing coming up to meet him. Low moans and incomprehensible babbling can be heard, however, rising up from somewhere below.
Khelzhad quickly helps the wounded Draxim extinguish the flames that torment him.
[Draxim is moderately wounded.]

Khelzhad hands Draxim a potion of healing [cure light] out of his belt."To your health", he adds in Dwarvish. He then reloads the crossbow.
"Captain, I suggest that some of us check rampart above in case there are any more surprises!"

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VI
[Sorry for jumping ahead.....but obviously Atan's deadly skill at archery is what killed it and not the harpoon missile Ulwe threw at it. ]
Atan's eyes scan the ceiling for any more tricks before he comes out from under the over hang, a blatant look of disgust on his face. Walking through the blood and gore he comes up to Janes at the metal doors.
[Can we see up onto the ramparts when we are by the door?][Does the door look like it is locked? Any shimmering swells of death magic swirling across its facade? Spot +8]
[Mostly. No. No. -GM]

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VI
I'm a little unclear on the layout, despite the map. I thought the stairs led down to the main chamber, through which the door to Zulquerzharhen's tomb is located. No?
[No. The main hall and the Experiment Room are all on the first floor of the fortress, just as the map describes. The "Stairs Down" leads to the lower levels of the keep and "Stairs Up" leads to the ramparts. -GM]

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VI
Janes reaches the mangled steel doors while Atan, a few feet behind him, keeps an eye on the ramparts. The elf sees nothing obviously dangerous up on the second floor of the keep but the many columns and buttresses supporting the iron-reinforced exterior of the fortress provide many places to hide.
Atan and Janes, peeking through narrow, twisting gaps where the two bent doors meet, are unable to see much of what's in the room beyond. A dense cloud of smoke fills the chamber but some unknown force keeps the rolling miasma from spilling out into the main hall. What they can see of the fifteen foot corridor between the door and the "Experiment" room does not fill them with hope.
The mangled iron door itself appears to have been beaten by an immense hammer from the inside, and the entire corridor is burnt and blackened. A similarly damaged form lays amid the ruin, its limbs twisted at odd angles, its armor torn in a dozen places, a broken sword at its side. It looks to be a woman and though it is almost certainly Chandra or Theony the body has been mutilated beyond recognition.
Ulwe picks his way through the disgusting pile of meat and retrieves his javelin. It is at that moment he notices the shadows cast by Janes and Atan slowly swing from left to right. Somewhere beyond the doors Irigaal is moving.

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VI
Having quaffed the healing potion given to him, Draxim pairs off with Khelzhad and they run off to inspect the upper level. Draxim's streetwise kicks in and they ascend the stairs carefully as a team and looking around in all directions as they emerge on the top.
[GM - on the ground level, are our shadows relatively long as a setting sun, or short as the midday? Khelzhad checks the orientation as they reach the bottom of the stairs.]
[They are long, and oriented such that Irigaal is likely to the west of the double doors. -GM]

Madragar will stand where he has a clear line of sight to the doors and wait for others to open them. When it seems that they are close, he will cast his final non-cantrip spell.

healing of Yelm.
"Hold Draxim." Sangraal calls out as he moves up to the burned dwarf. " Do not drink that potion, it is better served if I use this scroll.
Removing one of the newly found scrolls for his sack Sangraal reads it aloud.
Then draws the 2 handed sword strapped to his back.
"I intended to particpate in the vanquishing of this demon." he spits.
[OOC: Cure Moderate wounds 2d8+5 on Draxim. Draw the two handed sword
The potion is better used when we are in combat. If a cleric cant ge to draxim then he can heal himself. Right now we have scrolls, lets burn those first.]

Re: ealing of Yelm.
Seeing the party moving in separate directions, Ulwe raps the butt of the Longspear of Kurigalos on the flagstones.
"The light moves within! We can explore the rest of the fortress after we have dealt with the main threat."
He grabs the javelin from a pile of innards and move to the steel doors with Atan and Janes.

Pogar will try to silently walk down the stairs, just to get a peek. He will note what he sees and report back to Atan, with what he has seen.

Khelzhad quickly answers Ulwe's concern:
"Not exploring, True Spear - looking for more enemies or better yet - survivors. Let us not be un such haste to unleash what is for now contained."

Door number one.
After Sangraal's Cure Moderate, Draxim is feeling much better.
Khelzhad and Draxim take a look around the ramparts but find nothing of interest. The racks of crossbows and ammunition have all been stripped by the villagers and no foul beasties are hiding among the thick stone columns. It takes them a couple minutes to explore the upper level of the Fortress.
Pogar clanks his way down the staircase and peeks into a large chamber adjacent to the kitchens of the garrison. The room is mostly empty, except for some debris.
In the meantime, Ulwe, Atan and Janes observe some shape moving off in the black smoke that fills the Experiment room. By watching the movement of their shadows they quickly determine that it is Irigaal, or at least the mace that contains the ancient demon, moving through the chamber.
Also, as they continue to search the smoke for an indication of impending danger, the trio surmise that the smoke is not smoke at all but a pall of shadow.

Re: Door number one.
"Atan" Sangraal calls " a bag of bladesharp if you will."
"Gladly Sun priest" says the elf as he hands a bag of oil over, his eyes scanning the room.
[OOC: Sangraal oils up the two handed sword with bladesharp.
Sangraal cast cure moderate, not cure serious. The cure serious is for when somebody loses a head.
Halle is studying for a big exam today so he ask me to keep Atan moving. ]

Quote: Draxim quaffs the potion, drops his pack withthe rest of the loot, and heads inside.
[No 2hander for Sangraal ]
Seeing Sangraal looking for a bladed weapon, Ulwe unslings his small steel shield and draws the Mastercrafted longsword from its scabbard.
"Here, take these Dawn-Brother."

Re: Door number one.
[Right, cure moderate.]
[Draxim in fact had TWO greatswords - one on in his "pack" and one on his person. Absurd, I know, but it's in the genre. In any case, the Inquisitor can have his greatsword.]
So, Atan/Sangraal, what's the plan? -GM]

Its a plan
Atan surveys the room.
" The demon wants out. Lets bar the doors behind us and set up defensive positions. Its obvious he is anxious to be free by the damage done on the door. Utama can you seal us in?"
[OOC:Can the outerdoor be barred?]
