Re: Zing!
With his toes inches from the pool of flaming liquid shed by Irigaal, Ulwe lashes out at the resurrected Emperor. The razor sharp spear of black iron cuts through Zulquerzarhen's tattered robes and strikes his skin, but it is a small wound. Despite the obvious lethality of the enchanted spear, Ulwe feels like he's trying to punch a kitchen knife through a saddle bag.
Atan glides swiftly to the southwest and takes aim on Zulquerzarhen. Sangraal is directly in the path of the mysterious arrow, but Atan has a keen eye and times it perfectly... or almost. With the arrow in flight, Sangraal heaves back to lay another slash across the embattled Emperor. Atan cringes, but is amazed when the arrow passes right through Sangraal, armor and all, before striking Zulquerzharen high in the chest, though it does not penetrate nearly as deeply as Atan had hoped.

Facing?
[ Could I get an idea of which direction this thing is facing? Janes wants to position to get a sneak attack with his crossbow.]
[Facing isn't important, only whether or not someone is on the other side of the enemy from you. With a missile weapon you also have to be within 30'.
Looked it up and you can only flank in melee. So, with a missile weapon you can only get a sneak attack if the target is flat-footed, or helpless I suppose. -GM]

Re: Facing?
Sneak attacks are possible any time the target is denied his Dex modifier to AC. This could happen through flanking, being flat-footed or being helpless, but it could also happen through:
1) Feints. See the Bluff skill.
2) Invisibility. Yours, not his.
3) Concealment. See the Hide skill.
4) Others. I've copied an article from the WotC website into the General Discussions forum for anyone interested in the details.

Re: Facing?
Would the target being considered flanked by a missle weapon if he was already flanked to two other opponents? I would think that (s)he would be, but I ain't running this thing.
[No. A target can only be flanked by melee weapons. -GM]

Re: Facing?
Draxim gets up and maneuvers around the pool of liquid fire to reach the Emperor.
[Wish Mike had left instructions for Janes.]
Janes retrieves his crossbow and fires it into the melee. Despite the interference of his comrades running this way and that, weapons swinging and his target dodging, the bolt finds its mark. Janes is disappointed, however, when the missile only barely grazes the Emperor and falls to the ground.
Pogar quickly regains his balance and throws himself back into the battle. The stout, unwashed dwarf maneuvers along the length of Ulwe's spear and gets inside Zulquerzarhen's guard. His fierce axe slashes across the Emperor's thigh, raising a considerable wound and a fresh flow of blood. Pogar grins with satisfaction but his face soon contorts with shock as the Lunar sovereign's blood begins to burn.
Suddenly, Zulquerzarhen transforms into a column of liquid fire, which gravity quickly sends splashing to the ground. Sangraal, Pogar and Draxim dive backward to avoid the burning flood but are each coated with flames below the knees. All three companions yelp and dance as the flesh of their legs begins to burn. The Emperor does not reappear.

Re: Facing?
Ulwe jumps back from the pool of fire and takes a second to get his bearings. Seeing Janes near Theony he shouts "Is she dead?"
Not looking, but listening for his response, Ulwe inspects Pogar for damage, as well as Draxim, if he can see the soughty Dwarf across the pool of fire.
[ooc: 5'NW, readies scroll of cure moderate, will either finish move and cure Theony if she lives, or cure Pogar if he is bad off and Theony is Dead. ]

Re: Ring of Fire
Janes rushes over to where Theony is pinned to a table, puts his ear to her mouth and cries out "she's alive!"
Ulwe swiftly crosses the ground between himself and Janes. Then, producing a flat disk of time-worn leather, he intones a healing prayer over Theony. The swordmaiden's body stirs as she returns from the depths of unconsciousness, but she is still badly wounded.

Re: Ring of Fire
Regretting that he left his water skins outside he stays by the orb. Atan scans the rooms, eyes wary of an unseen threat. "How much longer?", he calls out.
[Atan looks to see if everyones shadows are changing. By using the direction of everyones shadows he tries to get a rough crossfix of Irigaal's location.]

Utama doesn't answer, but the dragonewt has only just begun fiddling with the apparatus.
Scanning the shadows cast by his companions [a tactic I thought y'all would be using since last December], Atan thinks the source of the light is somewhere to the east, in Madragar's direction.

Re: Ring of Fire
Atan moves over to the three on fire companions. Pulling off his camflague over-tunic he tries to help beat out the flames.
"Everyone hurry. We must give him no rest."
[If it looks like they won't need help putting out the flames he will double move across the room using his shadow as a guide.]
[Are you saying that Irigaal is still in the room or outside?]
[I'm saying that the source of light that is creating the shadows is somewhere to the east of Madragar. -GM]

Re: Ring of Fire
Sangraal, Pogar and Draxim are, in fact, still on fire. With Atan's help they manage to douse the flames with whatever expendible object is handy.
Janes, nearly in tears at the sight of his badly wounded, and perhaps tortured, friend, grasps one of the daggers pinning Theony to the table. Suddenly her hand lashes out and clamps down on his wrist. Lookin up through half-open eyes, face swollen and bloodied, Theony rasps "...don't."
Ulwe cries out, a white-fletched arrow protruding from his back. Shocked and in terrible pain the elf wheels around to see Atan, the string of his bow still quivering from the shot, staring at him with an evil grin on his face. The ranger's expression then swiftly progresses through several stages:
"Wonderful"
"Who did that?"
"Did I do that?"
"I shot Ulwe!"
Ulwe, wincing from the terrible wound in his side, stifles a giggle, but then smiles broadly as the pain that plagues him fades into a sense of wonder and completeness. The elf's subconscious mind screams in horror but he is overwhelmed by the sensation of pleasure caused by the arrow buried deep in his back.
Zulquerzarhen reappears in a burst of flame, standing just a few feet in front of the main doors of the Fortress.
"Welcome, slaves," the Emperor declares with smug mockery. "You will be the first of many Paindrinkers to be drawn to my banner, and I shall be your champion."
Map updated.

"We are not slaves and we are certainly not Paindrinkers - we are the Companions of the Light and we will send you back to the dead even as we have released you!"

For Hate's Sake...
Out of quips, Madragar simply backpedals towards the doors and reads on his many scrolls. A brilliant burst of rainbow-hued light momentarily surrounds the emperor.

Tragically bad luck, part deux
Khelzhad's missile speeds toward its target, but as it gets within a few feet of Zulquerzarhen it bursts into flame - consumed to ash almost instantly.
The Emperor's booming voice fills the main hall of the Fortress with laughter.
"Oh no, not Paindrinkers yet. But soon you shall be. If mother can be turned against daughter then your feeble loyalties can be over-ooooooo...."
Zulquerzarhen's voice trails off into a song of childlike wonder as a curtain of sparkling light cascades around him. His eyes wide and staring, the Emperor stands transfixed. Irigaal, however, roars into life, spitting fire and smoke in its fury. For the moment, however, its wielder is oblivious.

Re: Tragically bad luck, part deux
Sangraal takes off running towards the enthralled Emperor.
"Do not hurt him for fear of breaking the enchantment!" Sangraal shouts.
"Disarm him but do not attack him untill Irigaal is out of his hands."
[OOC: Non-combat run x4 ( chain suit is not heavy armor) towards the Emperor.
Go Nolan! Good Job
Do not want to steal anyones thunder but using a hero point to shoot Irigaal out of his hand would be cool ( i.e Atan)]
[It'd be funny if Atan was suddenly possessed by the urge to kill one of his friends and spent a hero point to put an arrow in Sangraal's head. Well, I'd laugh. -GM]

Janes looks torn for a moment, but runs [ well, full moves due south ] to the coffin looking for something that could be quickly fashioned into a lasso or a net.
