Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
Pondering for a moment, thinking of the unfamiliarity of the sword in his grimy, yet sturdy hands.

"If Ruglan chooses to wield this sword, I would gladly give it to him. I need not magic weapons, though this toy" giving the sword another cross body slash to the imaginary opponent in front of him, "is fun, I do feel unfamiliar with this weapon". Pogar finishes.

Re: Road Trip
[just to be clear about the Duergar Captain's chain - Khelzhad has only made mention of his desire to purchase the piece from the party with his share of the gold. Draxim the Treasurer still carries it.]

Re: Road Trip
[Ruglan has crossed over into the realm of NPC so far as I know. AS such has no claim to magic goodies in this PC's mind. The sword is Khelzhad's as far as Ulwe is concerned.]

"Pogar, the Brooslayer has fought hard and bravely with us, and long before my time with the Companions I may add. He did not fight in our last two battles, though through no fault of his own. You risked your dirty neck, not he. Ruglan is an honorable man and I could never imagine him wanting that which he did not shed his blood over. If he does I would be suprised, and would stand by your claim to your 'toy'."

[Say what? Ulwe and Madragar and the rest don't know what an NPC is! Ruglan's got the same claim we all do!]

Re: Road Trip
[I agree. Whether or not Ruglan is an NPC now or not. Even though he was "disabled" in the battle, he still did share the risks that we all took. Unfortunately he was under the spell of something and so far, as far as I know, isnt with us (where the group has convened) but his share of this bounty is still his, as it is all of us. As well as, Pogar is not one to really fight with a sword. His weapon of choice is an Axe. If Ruglan doesnt come back, or chooses not to take the sword, then Pogar would use it. Or at least hold on to it, until someone who has a greater need for a sword to use, then Pogar would give it up.]

Re: Road Trip
[It was an early suggestion by the GM for what Janes might get in lieu of a magic item. Most players who have weighed in prefer the "equal share of the loot now, first dibs on a magic item next time" route. I know I do.]

Re: Road Trip
[Yes I know the characters don't know what an NPC is. I do. As a player of this game, I'm agin an NPC takin our goodies. Since he is an NPC, we'll have to see where GM takes it. For all we know right now, Ruglan could be a permanent vegetable, in which case He'll get the shortsword in the neck to put him out of his misery. :evil ]

Annual Scroll Destroying Ritual
After everyone secures their new goodies, Ulwe speaks lowly across the dying embers of the fire to Sangraal. "Friend, there is another chore you must set to, which I will gladly assist. In your pack are tokens of blasphemy. We should destroy them now, lest their unclean presence contaminate us. Or do you plan to take them to your Order, along with the Stag?"

[A year ago to this day Real-time, Sangraal destroyed a nasty scroll. Weird huh? ]

Re: Road Trip
Draxim considers the chain. "It would do me good, there is no doubt, for I rely on quickness to defend me in battle. And perhaps, if as Madragar says, this ring is for someone with subtlety...well I guess that describes you Khelzad more than me. "

Draxim takes the chain puts it on and gives up the ring to Khelzad.

Onward
As winter continues its slow trek northward from the deep, cold forests of the Wild Lands, the companions keep pace. Passing near the abandoned village of Shael, then onward to Thaedrun, they pause to camp each night in clearings showing signs of recent habitation - the villagers making the same journey north to Dobrug just four days ago.

Thaedrun appears undisturbed and, crouched on a hillside overlooking the village, the elves can clearly see the grotesque, alien stalks reaching skyward from amid the vine-choked ruins. Snow dapples the surrounding fields, and though there are signs that Theony and some of her men approached the place, the villagers soon moved on. Willing to leave well enough alone for the time being, the companions hustle northward, hoping to reach the most settled lands of Moagara before a real storm comes rolling out of the valley.

Finally on the seventh day of the journey from the Cairnhollow the weary travelers are suddenly beset by a pair of horsemen. Riding over a hillock the two riders, clad in the loose fitting leather scale common among the Olmani tribes to the west, trot casually up to the group. One of the men is smiling broadly while the other scans the surrounding terrain with suspicion.

After some tense moments, made worse by an impenetrable language barrier, the smiling one points northward and says repeatedly "dee-oh-nee!" Several minutes of confusion and wild gesticulation is finally resolved when the rider dismounts and then stands beside his horse, draping part of the animal's mane over his head in a mockery of long brown hair. Janes finally catches on. "Theony!" he declares.

Just as the sun falls below the peaks of the Valegalen mountains the companions, and their Olmani escort, emerge from the eaves of the Cullwood and into the grasslands that surround the village of Val'waha. There they behold a sea of white tents encircling the modest settlement.

Seated on the northernmost ford of the swift and rocky Nral river, Val'waha is primarily a trading post. Its palisade surrounds a collection of wooden, thatched-roof huts and a single communal longhouse, but most visitors to the village reside outside its timber walls. Foreign traders, winding their way through the vast Olmani grasslands to the west, pass through Val'waha on their way to Dobrug, and occasionally to Thasvara beyond. The fields surrounding the village are often alive with activity, and the disorganized sprawl of tents and shoddy stalls form an immense marketplace. There is no better place in Moagara to purchase horses than in Val'waha.

The two Olmani riders lead the companions to a field east of the village, separate from the sprawling tent city but not far from it. There another collection of tents huddles around a copse of tall cedars. Several dozen laborers - both Moagaran and Olmani - appear to be constructing a palisade around the camp. Into this well order encampment, and directly to a large circular tent in the center of the copse, the companions are led. The place is full of the Hryl villagers, and many of them smile and wave as the group marches by. They seem to be in good spirits.

Within the central tent Theony greets them warmly and at last they are able to drop their packs and then themselves into the circle of soft cushions that form a kind of audience chamber. Theony joins them, though quickly summons wine and food for the famished travelers.

Re: Road Trip
Madragar nods politely to any villagers whom he recognizes, and smiles upon seeing the lady Theony, but he remains quiet. Though he has many questions, this is a moment for bards and warriors. He remains a presence in the background, never far from Atan's shoulder.

Re: Onward
Theony pours herself a mug of mahogany wine, but doesn't drink until everyone in the circle has a drink of their own. The normally subdued and serious young lady can't help but beam at her guests.

"I'm so happy to see you all again. I've been sending patrols down the south road for days now and hoped you would appear before the snows came. Honestly I didn't know if you'd return at all."

Re: Road Trip
"Yes, but returned from where?" Sangraal blurts out the question that has been on his mind for the last several days.
"I have little recollection of the final moments and was hoping you could shed some light on the mystery."

Re: Onward
Theony stares into her wine, swirling the dark liquid in its earthen container.

"I don't remember much of those last moments myself, but the flames... yes, I remember those... from my grandfather's house."

Theony pauses, drinks deeply, and continues.

"I never knew him, the man they called Wulfwaru, but when I was a child my mother and I began sorting through his effects. I remember her asking anyone she could find about where he might have gone, and who the yellow-eyed stranger was that came to us that night and met secretly with my grandfather. Searching through what was left behind in his study was the next logical step."

"I touched the orb without thinking, without understanding the danger. It was a tiny sphere of green liquid, much like the one in that horrible experiment room. My mother and I were consumed by the explosion... an experience you all have now shared. I can only guess at what bizarre world to which our thoughts were carried, but we returned safely... though the orb was gone."

"That's when we learned about Them," Theony looks around at the face of each companion, searching for recognition. "The Hyrgurae, and how they have laired beneath our homeland since the horse tribes rode from the west."

Re: Onward
Theony looks glum, thinking about the Hyrgurae - a topic which seems to be only slightly less mysterious to her than to the companions. But at Draxim's question she brightens.

"Yes, indeed, though he still sleeps. There are no healers of worth in Val'waha, at least none that can be trusted. He is just outside, in a tent of his own."

Re: Onward
Theony shrugs. "They are well enough. Many continued on to Dobrug rather than stay here through the winter. I gave them their share of what we seized from the fortress vault and bid them well."

"Those that remained will have a busy winter. I mean to march south at the first blush of spring and reclaim the valley."
