Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
With Sangraal providing light to search by, Atan and he scour the duergar siegeworks for the gear they left behind. In one of the shadowborn huts they find their packs (or at least those that were deposited there) hanging neatly on hooks. Every single piece of treasure taken after the companions' battle with Urukavas, however, is gone. That is, except for those things that they brought with them into the Fortress.

Atan locates both javelins beneath several inches of burned rock and dust - the crumbling remains of Irigaal's burning statue. He does not locate Chandra's bow.

Regarding the sarcophagus, although it was made of runemetal the priceless material is shattered beyond usefulness. Madragar mentions that runemetal, once it has been forged, can never be used again.

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
Janes narrows his brown eyes and tugs on his brown ponytail, then rubs the faint scar over his right eye while he tries to think back on past conversations with Theony and Chandra.

[ Does Janes have any idea where Theony would likely take the surviviors? ]

[Dobrug seems like a likely destination, or at least into the farmlands of Osender. All the settlements in the valley have been destroyed. -GM]

"Gentlemen, I can think of two very good reasons to find Theony. First she can probably tell us what happened, and second, she has all that gold. I would guess that she probably headed to Dobrug. I say we go there."

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
"Theony might have been affected just as we were," opines Madragar. "We did not all reappear at the same time. Sangraal arrived first, then I, then Ulwe, then you. Theony may simply have been first."

"Then again, her supernatural connection with the blood of Hralma and the Orb may have meant a certain immunity to the devastating effects we suffered. We will not know until we find and question the Lady."

Madragar has his few belongings packed and waits for the group by the exit to the Fortress.

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
Ulwe chimes in after Madragar in agreement: "Aye whatever phenomenon affected us may very well have affected Theony. At this point it is conjecture. I agree with Sangraal. I wish more than anything to see the Sky above, feel the wind and be warmed by the grace of Yelm. Whatever the weather though, I shall be happy to leave this Cairnhollow, and walk upon the surface world."

Ulwe pauses as he considers the statement he made. Then he bends on a knee, not to appear condescending but to look his new friends in the eye.

"Khelzhad Songwise and Pogar Braveaxe, will you leave your homeland and journey to a world strange to you? Would you honor our Company with your stout hearts?"

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
"Yes lets," Draxim says responding to Janes. He seems eager to get going now that his pack is discovered. After eating a bit of biscuit from the rations in his pack he grimaces and says, "I make it a whole week by the taste of this." He makes sure a handful of the smoked fish is available then wrestles the monstrosity onto his heavily muscled, filthy back. He then looks around expectantly.

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
On hearing "4 to 5 days", Khelzhad looks to his stomach and consumes 2 meals of rations. As he chews, he carefully considers Ulwe's words.

"I must admit that I am in no rush to encounter the face of Yelm directly as it shines on the surface, but after what we have been through I feel I must go with you further still. Utama mentioned that we would encounter ancient enemies and he did not lie. It is likely that both Irigaal and Urukavas will seek revenge on us when they are able, and we know not what became of Zulquerzarhen. There is no doubt that only together shall we stand chance against them a second time as we did the first."

Ulwe smiles again, then his face is all business as he stands up.
He puts his pack on and looking to Khelzhad, raps his spear butt twice on the stones.

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
Gathering up their possessions, and still marvelling at the scene of destruction from which they emerge unscathed, the companions set out for the surface world. Passing the stone table left by the Ghuraskalli long ago, Khelzhad and Pogar stop to whisper a few prayers for their lost and fallen kin. With more questions than answers to the fate of their ancestors, the young dwarves venture beyond where even those wayward folk ever reached.

Up along the winding switchback and through the open doors of the narrow fortress, the companions continue on. The huge corridors of the upper mines are silent and bare. Finally they pass by the tiny outpost that was their home for those first violent and gruelling days in the Cairnhollow. Down the sloping tunnel that leads out of the mines, the companions come at last to the blinding light of the mid-day sun.

In the shallow canyon that leads from the mine entrance to the abandonded village of Hryl, the world is white. The first tentative snows have fallen in the mountains and the afternoon is crisp and cool.

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
Stopping at the enterance, Pogar is obviously disturbed.

"What is that white stuff, is this what the..uhum..."surface world" looks like all the time?" He asks with a simple, child like attitude. Never before, seeing the surface world, Pogar is filled with excitement and trepidation. Slowly Pogar will emerge, once seeing his other companions step into the white lands.

Sangraal stands soaking up the little heat the winter sun provide.

"Yelm, you have led us back from the dark." he smiles, his spirits immediatly bolstered.

Digging into his backpack he unpacks a very rinkled set of wollen clothes to protect against the chill air.

"Atan are their any signs that the villagers left after the first snow? tracks maybe?"

[OOC: Sangraal searches for any signs that the villagers passed this way.]

Khelzhad also marvels at the snow and does not expect the snowball that Draxim pelts him with. Although he has been to the surface before as an apprentice bard, the changing seasons are new to him. He has only his one layer of wool suited to the temperature and dampness of the unchanging underground.

"Meneloss!" Exclaims Ulwe.*
He is much too quick for the second snowball thrown by Draxim, but quite unready and not suspecting the one thrown by Janes.

Wiping away the snow from his face, he grimaces.

"Watch your back Cave-man!" He warns.

Then he pats the snow off of Khelzhad and proceeds to wrap the Dwarven bard in his winter blanket.

Seeing the child-like playfulness with the companions, Pogar takes up some cold snow and immidiately drops it.
"Never have I seen anything like this. Its cold!!" He exclaims. However, not one to give up so easily, Pogar will grab some snow, make as best a snowball he can and will wing it at Atan.

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
Just before departing the cave, Atan offers up the rune metal javleins to whomever wants to carry them.

After handing over the weapons he drops his pack and pulls out the winter cloths he had stored during the adventure in Cairnhollow. Removing his dirty, singed woodland camoflagued over-tunic he dons a thin dark grey woolen coat over his chain mail shirt. Then, turning the green and brown over-tunic inside out, he reveals a different pattern. Consisting of mostly white cloth with patchs of brown and grey, he throws it on to cover the coat. Lastly snugging down on his head the same black woolen cap from Old Kurlew. Stepping outside the cave a few steps, the weather not appearing immediatly too nasty, he decides to forgo the cloak and mittens.

Giving a hearty laugh of mirth. "Praise Yelm! For we have his light and not the sickening rays of Irigaal and Urukavas."

Starting forward, "We have at least week, maybe longer if the weather opens up. Check your food supplies. I have got nine days of trail rations thanks to the Duergar but if you are short supplies, sing out and I can share. It is early winter and game is still plenty, but if we must resort to hunting that will also slow us. I will check for any signs of the villagers Sangraal, but this new snow will make it difficult."

[Check for tracks of villagers and any who may have been in the area (ie Rokuru) and try to determine what the weather might be like for the day or so (wilderness lore +8) ]

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
"This haunch of dried meat, this package of smoked fish, and these boiled roots should last about two weeks, give or take a day. If anyone has forgotten to stock up, I can share with them." Says Ulwe as he rummages through his hefty pack, which is beginning to resemble Draxim's though considerably smaller.

As Atan holds out the Javelins, Ulwe reaches for one but hesitates.
"I have this spear, so I have already gotten more than a fair share. If others would carry those Javelins then they must do so."

[If nobody wants to carry them, Ulwe will take one.]

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
Atan and Sangraal can both see clearly that the villagers didn't pass through within the last day. The snow looks like it may have fallen as recently as the previous morning. Beneath the snow, however, Atan finds ample evidence of foot traffic by a large group - probably the villagers by the look of their prints. The tracks head the only way they can... toward the village.

[Just a note on the state of everyone's equipment, no one emerged from the Cairnhollow without being wounded, coated in dust, blasted by smoke, splattered with blood, or otherwise immersed in icky fluids. Shields are smashed, armor torn, clothing essentially ruined. Janes is probably the least worse-off, but his clothes are forty five years old, and smell like it.

So, unless the PCs revel in their stink (and some of them may) then they should consider getting completely new gear when the opportunity presents itself.]

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
Draxim's pranks come to an abrupt end at the mention of the word Meneloss. The greif at the recent (no really) loss of a freind returning to stab him in the heart. Realizing that Ulwe meant no offense (for Meneloss had revealed his name's meaning) he shakes it off as best he can.

Not being modest, the dwarf takes the opportunity to strip down, change into his slightly less damaged and slightly less dirty outfit.

"One of these used to be green" he muses, "but for the life of me I can't remember which one."

He then adds a fur lined cloak, some oilskin bootcovers to his garb, making him look positively clean in comparison. He repacks everything then renews his battle with the massive pack that has begun to resmble a mobile junkpile.

Let's get back to that... to those villagers he prompts.

Re: The Cairnhollow, Part VII
[OOC: I have not mentioned it, but Sangraal has always used Javelins. Granted Meneloss stole them while he was knocked out and killed a broo with one, but Sangraal had previously utilized them as his missile weapon option. :D ]

Sangraal accepts the javelins from Atan and secures them to his pack in special leather loops he had attached some time ago for just such a weapon.

Placing a woolen cap upon his head, Sangraal winces slightly as the wool scratchs a sightly knot on his head. A minding present from the deamons tail the knot is neatly centered where the helmet had been sundered in two.

[OOC: I put the javelins on Sangraal sheet]

[For future reference, Draxim has always used gold, silver, gems, and jewelry. And Platinum. Oh and valuable balms.]
