Re: Road Trip
Khelzhad also speaks his mind now that the danger is momentarily past:
"The Chillerserpent, Utama and Urukavas all mentioned the name Savuud, and that we were performing the Savuuds work. Has anyones else heard this term before?"
[Salhaug, actually. Savud is a perfectly friendly dwarf that lives in Ravensgate. -GM]

Re: Road Trip
"I do not know the answer to your question, Master Dwarf, but I will say that on more than one occasion I have heard a disturbing voice in my mind, gloating that I was doing exactly as it intended. Atan and Ruglan have also heard it, possibly others as well. I suspect this being to be Salhaug."

Re: Road Trip
"Careful gentlemen." Ulwe admonishes his fellows. "To mention names is dangerous, especially one as perilous as that."
He finishes his last bit of dried smoked lakefish, and washes it down with a swig of icy-cold water gleaned from a nearby rivulet which stubbornly refuses to freeze. Then he warms his bones by the small campfire.

Re: Road Trip
"Do you know more?" he says to Ulwe. "So far it seems to just be a name....well, maybe a voice as well but that is yet to be proven."
Snacking on the strange dried meat taken from the shadow dwarves, "Mad, tell us more about these items we recovered from Urukavas. What have you learned?"

Re: Road Trip
"Ulwe speaks the truth. We should refer to it only as "the Hidden One".
"But on to other matters. Three nights have I dreamt over the runemetal items of the Cairnhollow, and many strange paths my mind has trodden, beyond the places where men dwell. In unknowable vaults of the soul, I perceived the truth of these things, and know their makers, their purpose and their curses."
"These two javelins, so light and crafted here with the tracery of lithe dancers are the Swan Maidens. Forged by the great Runelord Zhvedros, they will fly farther and truer than any others. But more than that, they are enchanted to slay the things of Chaos, doing great hurt to them."
"Here," says Madragar, hefting the shortsword and letting the firelight play down its blade, "you see The Grinning Blade. Crafted in aeons past by the Lunar sage Ilthizaen, it has a most curious enchantment. When once it draws the blood of a foeman, that blood which remains upon the blade becomes a potent poison against that one foe."
"The arrow which Atan fired through me is known as Mist Falcon. It's maker is lost in the mists of time, but it's purpose is clear. It will harm only things of Chaos. Indeed, stone and armor and shield and flesh are to it no more substantial than air, save only those things tainted with chaos or crafted of a certain manner of magic known as 'force magic'. In addition, it is enchanted to be dealier to things of Chaos."
"The chain shirt, Silkreik's Chain is a marvelous work of the Art. It's creator, one Silkreik, was a master of movement in combat. He feared being caught immobile, and so crafted the armor that when its wearer is caught off guard or held immobile, the armor stiffens to a remarkable degree, making him all but invulnerable to normal weaponry."
[It's just a silver chain, not a chain shirt. -GM]
"Silreik also crafted this ring, named, appropriately enough, Silkreik's Ring. Once per day, its wearer can cast the spell Disappear, and then change his visage and form altogether."
Last of all, Madragar holds up the great spear. "The Iron Stag, I regret to say, is an item of great power, but pure evil. Though it's bearer becomes agile as a stag in combat, the spear's true power is devastating. A terrible word of power can release it's evil on the night of the New Moon, slaying everything around it for forty paces. Everything, that is, save those tainted by Chaos."
[OOC: I'll put the items actual stats in the Discussion Forum]

Re: Road Trip
Ulwe's face becomes aghast when Madragar describes the Iron Stag.
"Orlanth forgive me." He murmors upon learning the weapon's true nature. When he hears about the Swan Maidens his interest in the controversial javelins becomes even greater.
"These are holy relics. Forged by Zhvedros, Runelord of Orlanth. I cannot deny that I greatly desire to weild one of them."

Re: Road Trip
Around the warmth of a flickering campfire the companions closely inspect each item, mindful of their value and the power within them.
The two javelins are each expertly crafted with both sufficient weight and perfect balance for throwing. All along their length they are carved with spirals and swirls that seem eminently appropriate considering they were crafted by a Runelord of the Wind God.
The shortsword is another matter entirely. No artistry went into its fashioning, and at first glance the sword looks fairly plain. Yet close inspection reveals that the hilt bears two faces, one on either side where the handle meets the blade. In the dancing firelight the faces seem to move, and each appears to either laugh or weep depending on how one looks at them.
Silkreik's chain and ring are both fairly mundane in appearance, being silver and unadorned. The powers granted to their wearers, however, would seem to indicate that they were made to be inconspicuous intentionally.
The lone arrow is itself a shaft of pure white, gleaming like bone but infinitely stronger. Its fletchings are gray like goose down, and its head is a wide triangle with deep barbs.
Finally, the brooding spear seems at one with the night, its black iron rivaling the shadows themselves in their darkness.

Re: Road Trip
"That arrow puts me in mind o'them apparitions in Ole Kurlew" Draxim reminices as he pokes at the fire. "Wish you coulda seen that Khelzad, Pogar. Amazing caverns! Hewn by a Giant they were. We found his hammer and even Ruglan and I couldn't lift it. He pauses for a bit.
"I hope he's OK."
Those paying attention can see that concern for Ruglan is at least part of what is making the dwarf morose these days, apart from the snow ball fight and boisterous singing of Khelzhad's mining tunes. He stabs his fire-poking stick into the snow causing a breif hiss as the elements argue. He goes back to his studied task of the last several days: Trying to get his Battle Axe back into shape.

Won't haggle?!?
Khelzhad is not shy about stepping up and declaring his desire for the silver chain of the Duergar captain, not only for its worth but quite obviously for the prestige it would bring him back home.

"I have laid no prior claim to these weapons " Sangraal indicates to the javelins. " but do not wish to see the Maidens split."
"If I were to have a choice I would like to recieve the Iron Stag above all else, barring that the Maidens."
"The reason being - The Iron Stag is of an evil nature. Its darkest power revealed only on the darkest of nights. I take it to destroy it."
[OOC: Sangraals choices:
1. the Iron Stag
2. Swan Maidens

Re: Road Trip
"I lay no claim to any of these runemetal masterpieces," says Madragar, leaning back. "They are for warriors, diplomats and spies."
"However, this is one more treasure to consider." With a small flourish, Madragar holds up a small but sturdy tome bound in green leather. Some may recognize it as the book taken from Joru.
"A great prize, this. At least, for one of the magi. Though it has no name and my waking dreams have revealed no author, the eldritch mysteries laid out herein are so cunningly wrought that they make it easier for one versed in the arcane arts to memorize and retain the complex power of spells."
"This, as Sangraal says, is my pick."
[See Discussion forum for OOC details of the book.]

Re: Road Trip
"I am glad that someone would pick the Stag and for the right reasons. However if it is to be destroyed, and it must, then it should not count against the bearer's claim to other treasure. Sangraal, we should split the pair of Swan Maidens. You should take one, and as I have probably overstated, I wish to bear the other. If one day we part paths, then we will decide the fate of the other javelin."
[Ulwe will not even touch the Stag again, knowing it's true nature. Ullwe wants 1 javelin.]

Re: Road Trip
"The Maidens were forged as a pair by the Runelord Zhvedros. A Runelord of Orlanth. I have no wish to split them up and it would only be fitting that a priest of Orlanth carried the Maidens."
[OOC: Sangraal would not take an item whose history corresponds with another character. It would be like a frenchmen and an Englishmen finding king Aurthers sword and the Frenchmen takes it. Sure they found it together but It just doesnt make sense.
history and style always trump IMO. ]

Re: Road Trip
"Now that ring would be a bit handy scouting around wouldn't it? Are you sure that I would change back to myself again? Madragar? That gives me the willies."
Draxim holds the ring up superstitious fear warring with his trust in the bald mage's assurances.
[The ring would be Draxim's pick. But if someone else wants it he would willingly give it up.]
[I notice that only one of the MC chainsuits has been claimed. What size are they? Could Draxim wear one?]
[Both of the suits of MC chainmail are human sized. Draxim suspects, however, that his share of the treasure would be enough for him to buy several such suits. Then again, it's all in Theony's keeping... you hope. -GM]

Re: Road Trip
"The Runelord forged two maidens," says Madragar.
"And the champions of the light have two javelin-tossers. I should have thought that plain as the light of Yelm. You are generous, Sangraal. But so is Ulwe. Share the Swan Maidens, one to each, like brothers."

Re: Road Trip
"I agree you should share the maidens." He comes and takes one from Sangraal, testing its balance I wouldna mind trying one of these myself. They are ... incredible!" He hands it back to Madragar and whispers, "don't you give in on this, sharing these javelins will be good for them."
"Or maybe you could take it in turns, one to act as healer and the other to act as spear chucker. Then when one of your ...er .... holy strength is gone for the day you can swtich off."

The puddles of drool that form under Pogar as he admires the runemetal make it obvious that he would be happy with all, or at least some of the horde.
Khelzhad is intrigued by Silkreik's Chain.

Re: Road Trip
"If both Maidens would be mine to use, then it would be my choice to have you bear one, to honor me and my Lord, who honors your Lord in return." Says Ulwe to the Yelmite.
Ulwe picks up the pair. "This one I shall call Joalla, after my sister." He hands Joalla to Sangraal. "What will this one be called?" He asks holding the still as yet unnamed javelin.
[Not to be too assumptive, but can we assume that Sangraal and Ulwe get the javelins?]
[Also re: the mastercrafted Items, there were three short swords which each are worth thousands of gold. Unclaimed/unused items should be sold. I am also in favor of weighting the gold disbursement towards the few who recieve no magic items... ]
