Re: Dobrug
Looking around the room, Ulwe notices that everyone is present except for Pogar. He vaguely remembers the dwarf stopping out the front door about an hour ago, but thought he had returned.

Re: A Kidnapping Caper
"I agree, another night will not help us, but Yashi's resources seem to be greater then ours. It would not help us to alert her that we are the ones roughing up her guard. We need to do this with at least a resemblance of stealth. It should take us the today to plan it."
"We should hit the merchant when he goes to close for the evening. We will have all night then to act on any information before some one finds him and the guard."
"First we need to buy some Olamnii cloaks and some clubs for all of us today. The hooded kind. Khel, can scout the place for us just before we go in. Show alot of money to get the merchants attention. Spend some time and get the lay of the shop, try to learn if anyone else is there or in the back. When done come out and give us the go or no-go. Your call."
"When you go back go in disguise as an Olmanii and with Madragar into the shop. Cloak hoods down tight concealing our faces. Draxim and Pogar by the back door. Mad casts the spell the momment he enters on the guard. Followed by the rest of into the shop. We will just bum rush, Khel locks the door and puts up the closed sign."
"We subdue everyone in the place. Everyone gets tied, blindfolded and gagged. Each of us should carry a set to bind people. I can't imagine we will find more then six people but who knows. If the alarm is raised we walk away in singles, ditch the cloaks, burn 'em if you can. Lay low at taverns until midnight then meet at Janes at midnight."
[Atan leaves his backpack. bow and quiver behind. Everything else he brings.]

Re: A Kidnapping Caper
"Alright, let's plan some more and get those things you suggested. But we need to act tonight. To lose more time only serves our enemy."
"Besides giving Naredru more time, a delay could prove even more disasterous to our lead. Oggsrund's Axemen are out for blood, specifically Yashai's Kurilitai. Last night, there was a fight and on my way here I saw many of the Axemen looking for trouble. Once they start drinking, the streets of Dobrug will be bloody. The morning will see Yashai's camp a fortified position, and we will not be able to approach the merchant so easily. I think our best chance is strike as soon as possible."

Re: Dobrug
As Khelzhad recalls, the shop was only about fifteen feet wide and twenty long. The kuralitai guard stood just inside the front door, and there was a second door at the back of the shop. Khelzhad doesn't know what was behind it.

Re: A Kidnapping Caper
Atan looks at Ulwe puzzled for a momment, "That's right. An axeman lost his hand in an arguement last night. What was that all about? Ruglan, Draxim can collect the needed equipment. I want to find out more about that fight with the Kuraliti. Being Yashai's personal guard I wonder what business they were upto. I'll be back mid-day."
With that, Atan heads out to buy some brews for an axemen or two and try to get some info on what the fight was over.
[GI on fight between Kuraliti and the Axeman. What it was about, where (ie a boat?) and who were involved.]

Re: Dobrug
"I have tried to follow this chain of reasoning, but I think a summary would be most helpful. Could someone explain why in the Lightbringers name I should help in a kidnapping attempt? Or for that matter why I shouldn't turn you all into the guards? I know that we have suffered much together, but I didn't think the people that I fought great evil with were also people that would commit one of the most cowardly of all crimes."
"It is my hope to become a respectable resident now that my past is in the dust. I have the opportunity to start completely fresh. Starting with such a heinous crime doesn't seem the ideal way to begin my new life."
Janes crosses his arms a waits patiently for an explaination.

Re: Dobrug
"Janes," Ulwe begins "...this merchant was seen with someone who closely matches the description of Naredru. Naredru murdered perhaps the last of the powerful guardians of Moagara, my former mistress Lyssa. In addition to stealing Lyssa's enchanted book and rod, Naredru took a stone disc which Lyssa had gleaned from a powerful Broo warlord. A similar disc had been taken from the watchtower by Grugni's inn by a Broo named the Dark Eye. Yashai collects these discs. We know the discs are if not tainted by chaos, items which interest the Enemy."
"That is the situation. Now this merchant who was seen with Naredru will know where the murderer headed off to. If we simply ask him where is Naredru, I am sure he will lie. Also he will alert Yashai. If he is dealing with murderous thieves, then he cannot be trusted. This is why I propose we abduct him and bring him before the Sword-Elders to compell him to speak the truth. I will aslo speak with Brae the Diviner to see if his wisdom can help discern truth from lies. We have to know where is Naredru and what role Yashai has played in the recent events."
"If we ask the town guard to take the merchant it could spark a riot between the guard and Yashai's personal bodyguards who protect the merchant. Better we take that risk ourselves to avoid getting those who are not involved hurt."
"As for the plan: we plan for no bloodshed only a wizardly enslumberment courtesy of Madragar. I too can compell those to do Orlanth's will but for only a short moment, it too will keep the bloodshed to a minimum. Any wounds the guard or merchant will sustain, I shall heal."
"If you are not comfortable with our conspiracy say so now and we shall try to find another place, and bother you nevermore. But please speak of this plan to no-one, you owe us at least that bit of loyalty."

Re: Dobrug
"Indeed," says Madragar. "We pursue the greater good, Master Janes. A secret lies with Naredru that may hold the fate of all in Moagara. We will do as we plan because if we do not, we may all soon fall under the Shadow. There is no other way."
[Player's Note: That is about as "un-Nolan" a line of reasoning as there can be. This role-playing stuff can be hard!]

Sword elders?
"So let me see if I understand this. You propose that we kidnap a man because he was seen talking to another bad man and then take him before some pretty heavy authority figures with the only reason for our kidnapping is that he talked to someone?"
"Doesn't this seem a little like a bad plan to anyone other than me? Have we considered another option? I realize that bribery is almost certainly a waste of time with regards to Naredru, but what about trickery? Do we know enough to pretend to be agents of Naredru that need to track down or pass information off to him?"
"I recommend that if you intend to drag this man before the Sword Elders that you at least let one of the elders know of your intentions just to see if they feel this is unsanctioned as much as I do."

Re: Sword elders?
"Janes, Naredru is more than a 'bad man' he murdered Lyssa. If Theony were poisoned by her lieutenant, you would wish to see him brought to justice. If that murderer was seen in the company of one like Uruul, you would want to question him yes? The problem with simply asking him 'where is Naredru' should be obvious to you. We cannot have the man arrested by the guard because he is too powerful, it could spark a wider conflict between the Olmanni and Moagarans here in Dobrug. Right now Uruul is an accomplice either willing or not to a truly 'heinous crime,' murder."
"Uruul, the merchant, is under the protection of Yashai. Naredru, who murdered my mistress and stole her legacy, is in league with Uruul, for after fleeing the scene of his crime came straight away to Dobrug and thence to Uruul. Why did Naredru come straight to him? Where did ge go thereafter? That is what we need to know. If our attempt to beguile or trick the wary Olmanni merchant fails, then we have alerted him and Yashai that we are on to them. That obviously will make it more difficult to get the information we need."
"Uruul is by proxy in league with the servants of Chaos. While we while away the hours in debate, they plot and scheme and move against us."

Re: Sword elders?
"He will not be harmed, Janes. Merely frightened. And turned over, alive and unharmed to the authorities. Is that so much a price to pay to secure the man who murdered Moagara's defender?"

The Law
Please approach the bench...
I applaud Janes' stance on the issue of Uruul and Naredru, and how Mike has chosen to play it is actually very appropriate - though he may not have considered why. Janes is from a time when the Lunar Empire was running the show in Moagara. Forty some years ago, the rules of conduct within the garrisoned settlements was fairly strict, particularly as it regarded violence against citizens. At that time the Moagaran cults played a subordinate role to the Lunar magistrates in the dispensation of justice.
However, in "modern" Dobrug, the authority of the Lunars has been replaced by that of the priests, specifically the Locamyrida and the Swordelders. In any case the code of laws in Moagara, since the departure of the legions, has become considerably more loose. Individuals often do take matters into their own hands, and strife between families and clans are common.
In short, there is a vague body of legal customs in Moagara, but no written code of laws. Common folk derive their morality from the teachings of their priests. So, while figuratively putting the screws to Uruul is not strictly illegal, it could have serious consequences. There will be fallout both from those who support him and from those who would take issue with a band of armed thugs, however well intentioned, taking matters into their own hands.
Then again, revealing your intentions may be enough to foil the effort in itself. It's impossible to say for certain.

Re: Sword elders?
Quote: band of armed thugs
"Adventurers", please. Thugs take your stuff and live in the woods. WE take your stuff and act self-righteous about it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Madragar shrugs. "Crime? We aren't going to rob him or dishonor his sister. We just want to talk to him, alone. Law isn't really our concern here, Janes. Even if such laws still ran in Moagara."
"Was it any less lawful to bring spell and sword against the broo in the Cairnhollow? We did what needed to be done. That is what men such as we are for."
"The Swordelders are the law, and we shall not fail to bring this man before them, in good time."
If Madragar understands Janes's concern, he himself seems unaffected by it.
[For the record; Atan never mentioned anything about taking the guy to see the Sword Elders. His intentions were to question the guy and leave him. Atan and the Sword Elders havn't gotten along inthe past.]
Re: Sword elders?
[ OOC - For the record, I consider Janes to be a good Roman plebe. He's not above things like blackmail, robbery and information theft, but a kidnapping is a whole different kettle of fish. That kind of thing tends to start family wars, which are long drawn out and ugly, hence his reluctance to do the smash and grab on this guy.
I also find it HILLARIOUS that the "rogue" is arguing with the priest that kidnapping is wrong. And I admit that is at least partially why I'm taking the contrary stance. ]
[ Janes will do some information gathering on this guy to see what he can learn. If everyone is bound and determined to run with this job then he wants to make sure it goes by the numbers. Gather Information 7 and he's willing to spend some money 20-30 silver to get the goods ]
[ Scott, check my section for something I've posted to get your approval on. ]
Re: Sword elders?
The day sloshes tediously into a soggy evening before the companions converge once again on Janes' little tavern.
[For the sake of brevity, let me explain... no, there is too much. Let me sum up.]
Atan glides through the front door and drops noisily into a chair in the corner, mumbling terse elven curses he hadn't used since his childhood among the trees and meadows of the mountains. His efforts to uncover the details of the confrontation between the kuralitai and the axemen were a complete failure. After scouring a variety of filthy brothels and picking through miles of muddy dockside alleyways, Atan found no one who could give him a reliable account of what happened, who was involved, or what was the exact outcome. His increasing frustration made his methods proportionally less patient and effective until, after hours of tavern crawling, Atan finally gave up and went home.
Ulwe returns after speaking briefly with the venerable Brae the Diviner who is widely regarded as one of the wisest priests in all the land. In fact, Brae is so old and so a part of the Moagaran culture that he is beyond the limitations of any single sect of Orlanth and is instead accepted as a member of them all.
Brae wasn't particularly interested in the fate of Naredru or Lyssa, being just as wary and prejudicial in regards to wizards as anyone else in Moagara. They are creatures best left alone, Brae is fond of saying. The wise priest was, however, very interested in the odd symbol Ulwe said was related to Naredru's transformation: a circle with three arrows emerging from its center.
That, Brae explained, is the mark of the sorcerous Xorn. Without hesitation he advises Ulwe to move against Uruul at once, and to seek a link between Yashai and either the Xorn, or those that follow Salhaug. If there is such a connection, Brae concludes, "we" will have to act. Ulwe surmises that "we" likely includes all the cults of the Locamyrida and whoever else Brae decides to get involved.
Ulwe is not surprised, however, when Brae explains that open war in the streets of Dobrug must be avoided. As such the Locamyrida cannot support the kidnapping and interrogation unless proof of Yashai's guilt can be uncovered.
Finally, Brae gives Ulwe the location of an empty dockyard storehouse to which the companions can retreat, just in case. It is located to the south of the Locamyrida, and is northwest of Uruul's shop.
Janes bounds into his pub with some details on Uruul. He, like Yashai, is of the Xixia tribe and actually came to Dobrug with the Lioness. Uruul is an honest merchant, as far as anyone can tell, who lives above his shop. His place is always guarded by the kuralitai though how many of them are in its vicinity at any given time is unknown.
Finally, just before dinner, Pogar comes staggering into the tavern covered in mud and with a nasty oozing gash on his head. His clothes are stained with blood, though his attitude seems surprisingly effulgent.
Pogar has been watching Uruul's shop all day in the guise of a homeless refugee. His first attempt to stagger drunkenly into the shop was met by a swift blow to the head by a kuralitai mace, followed by a vicious kick back out into the street. Bleeding and soaked with slick street mud, Pogar watched from a distance.
He reports that almost no one went into or out of the shop. A single kuralitai patrol stopped by, and then only briefly before moving on. That particular block of shops and storehouses, he discovered, appears to have been built with security in mind. There is only a single narrow avenue leading to a courtyard in the center of the block. The courtyard grants access to the back of each shop and it is guarded by a gang of kuralitai (numbering from six to ten at any given time).
