Re: Dobrug, Part II
As quietly as possible, Janes undoes the catches on the shutter and slides into the room, followed by Atan. When Madragar feels the rope go slack, he hauls it in, casts Levitate and descends to the window, also entering.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
Madragar glides through the window and finds himself in Uruul's bedroom. Janes is at the door to the chamber, scanning the hallway. Atan isn't doing much since his low-light vision has failed him within the intensely dark chamber.

The house is quiet and still.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
Madragar will wait for Janes's signal before proceeding toward the hallway. In the meantime, he will keep a hand on Atan's shoulder so that the elf knows where he is.

Janes will listen for activity in the house before signalling Madragar and proceeding into the hallway.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
The corridor is short, maybe fifteen feet or so. There is a single door at one and and a staircase leading down. With their darkvision, Janes and Madragar can see (through a gap in the stairwell) directly into the back room of the shop below.

Janes investigates the door at the end of the hall and finds a small office. There is a single table bearing a variety of writing implements and ledgers beneath a curtained window (likely leading to the courtyard). A fine wooden cabinet stands against one wall and two massive, brass-bound chests lay against another.

Other than Madragar, Atan and Janes, the shop appears to be empty.

[Halle's gone and no posts from Dobbs since the 14th. I need the rest of the group to run these two guys. Really... anyone.]

Re: Dobrug, Part II
Janes leans over the desk and flips through a few of the ledgers. Unfortunately they're all written in Olmani, which Janes doesn't understand.

However, Atan does understand Olmani, and with his help Janes manages to piece together an idea of what Uruul has been up to. For the most part, the expensive trinkets of his shop bring in several hundred gold per month to Uruul's coffers, with large, regular payments being made to Yashai. Try as he might, Janes doesn't find anything obviously illegal or even particularly unethical within the ledgers.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
With Atan guarding his back Janes cautiously descends the stairs as quietly as possible into the back room, his heart jumping like a frog in a cage.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
Madragar speaks to his familiar. "Kyethe, go perch on the rooftop and watch for anyone coming. Alert me immediately."

Then he follows Janes and Atan, keeping alert for any signs of magical wards, alarms or traps.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
The oft forgotten Kyethe zips through the curtained window and out into the rainy night.

Janes slowly creeps down the staircase into the back room of the shop with Atan and Madragar close behind. Just as Janes reaches the bottom, a fourth set of footsteps freeze the companions in their tracks. Thump, thump, thump, they echo through the chamber, rising up from below.

Through the floorboards just a few feet away from Janes a flickering light can be seen tracing the outline of a trap door. It sounds as if someone is coming up a staircase beneath the floor and will reach the trapdoor in a matter of seconds.

[Note to Madragar.]

Re: Dobrug, Part II
Palming the dust necessary for a Sleep spell, Madragar signals his companions to hide. If possible, he retreats out of the room. If not, he stands so as to be behind he trap door when it opens. He does this as quietly as he can.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
At the sudden noise, Janes instinctively halts his descent and crouches as low as he can against the stairs and wall. [Hide]

Re: Dobrug, Part II
Tarondor takes a few cautious steps back up the stairs to the landing above, keeping the trap door in view. Atan and Janes crouch low and finger their weapons.

The trap door swings open and a cowled head comes into view. Slowly a man steps up the stair below and into the back room of the shop. He doesn't immediately notice either Janes or Atan, deep in the shadows just a few feet away.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
Madragar (not Tarondor) now realizes that he has no friggin' idea what Uruul looks like. In any case, it is too late. From the shadows of the staircase, he invokes the Charm of Somnolent Repose.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
The stranger, still only half-way through the trapdoor, wheels around at the sound of Madragar's chant with his lantern held high, searching for the intruder. A wave of dim light passes over him as Madragar completes his spell, but the stranger shrugs off the spell. Instead, seeing Atan and Janes crouched nearby, he gropes for a dagger at his belt.

[Still in the Surprise Round. Janes and Atan.]

Atan dives into the hooded figure. He tries to grapple his opponent to the floor.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
The nimble Atan bounds down off the staircase and grabs the stranger around the neck and beneath one arm. The man gargles and sputters as Atan braces himself against the edge of the trap door and heaves backward, bending the stranger against the floorboards.

Janes moves in quickly and, taking the lantern from the stranger's hand, straddles his chest, pinning the man completely.

[He's grappled, held and pinned. Now what?]

Re: Dobrug, Part II
Madragar casts Change Self. He now appears as a short, fat, dusky-skinned man with a goatee.

He quickly moves forward to cover the man's mouth and prevent him from calling out.

"Listen to me," he whispers. "The first thing you need to know is that if you cooperate, you will not be harmed. However, if you shout out, or make any trouble whatsoever, my friend here will add your ears to his collection. Am I making myself perfectly clear?"

Re: Dobrug, Part II
[Looks like an Intimidate check to me, though Madragar isn't particularly good at it. Yet...]

The stranger's eyes dart between the disguised Madragar and Janes while Atan, behind the man, moderately tightens his grip on his throat. The stranger nods slightly and submits to his captors.

Janes quickly relieves the man of his dagger.

The stranger is middle aged and his dusky skin and straight black hair reveal an Olmani ascestry. His clothes are fine, bearing a mixture of linen and more exotic fabrics that the companions don't recognize. The man's silver rings and chain necklace speak of his modest wealth.

While moving the stranger into a more secure position on the floor (though still pinned) Janes notices a couple interesting facts. First, the man is not at all wet, so hasn't been out in the rain at all this night. Second, the lantern he was carrying has no oil, but its wick burns none the less.

Re: Dobrug, Part II
Is there anything about his dress or appearance that would suggest this is Uruul?

[No name tag in his underwear. This may be Uruul, this may not. -GM]
