Re: Off we go...
Brae takes a moment to peek through the open door, apparently assessing the size of the darkleech. The old priest grumbles something under his breath before moving east to make room Atan, Draxim, Pogar and Ulwe in the gallery.
"Yes, we need to fall back," he declares. "Would that I had a torch or tw-"
Brae is interrupted by a rumble of stone on stone, the thunderous arrival of some otherworldly creature bursting forth from the earth in the corridor to the east. Madragar, Khelzhad and Brae whirl around to face a hulking monster of living rock smashing its way through the doorway at their flank. Its glowing eyes surveying the group, the earthen creature roars its challenge.
To the south, Draxim, Atan, Pogar and Ulwe are quickly pushed toward the exit as the darkleech advances. A pair of black pseudopods lash out at them as they go. One nearly takes Atan's head off but the nimble elf ducks low. The second thumps loudly against Ulwe's shield, leaving a steaming, sticky blob of acid to slowly devour the wooden bulwark.
[Draxim is lightly wounded. Go.]

"Zhallocks!", curses Khelzhad in his native dialect as he fires a bolt at the new danger.

Re: Off we go...
Brae quickly reaches forward and grabs Khelzhad by the arm as he raises his crossbow to fire.
"The beast of earth cannot touch you, young dwarf, as long as Orlanth's shield is upon you. Pull that trigger and his protection will fail."

"Blessed be," sighs the dwarf in relief as the first beads of sweat trickle down from under his iron cap, mixing with the corpse dust on his face and leaving a sting in his eyes.

Re: Off we go...
Madragar's face lightens as he hears the elder's words.
"Yet we are trapped 'twixt two unsavory fates, elder. And this new one most certainly recently conjured against us. Can we force our way past it without causing the god's protection to fail us?"

Re: Off we go...
Falling back, and watching the black ooze come forth, Pogar turns the corner to see a giant Stone creature in front of him. Natural reaction for Pogar, would be to either run forth and attack or retreat. With his adrenaline already running, Pogar forgets of the black ooze behind him, quickly ponders the thought and decides to retreat to regroup himself. Pogar runs back around the corner to see the advancing ooze. Pogar realizes that the group is trapped. Quickly turning the corner, again, steeling his nerves at seenig the massive creature of rock, Pogar well step back into the crevace in the wall and think back on his childhood and the stories Uncle Grahva told him of his adventures, when he was a child.

"Elder Brae, can ought but fire hurt the darkleech? Will our blessed weapons withstand its acid blood?"
Ulwe asks the wizened priest.

Re: Off we go...
Draxim falls back with the rest doing his best to stay ahead of the corrosive sentient tar slop. He tries to retrieve a flask of oil from his pouch, but is very mindful of the goo, so he is prepared to run if necessary.
"More oil in my pouch!" he shouts.

"Only fire," Brae hisses, the old priest more and more concerned about the encroaching darkleech.
Khelzhad has managed to pile up the dried burial robes of five corpses. It's a significant amount of combustible material.

"Got a light?" Khelzhad says to Madragar. Otherwise he will have to use flint and tinder which will take some time.

Re: Off we go...
Madragar laughs, a sound of desperation and amusement. "Oh yes," he says. "Oh, yes." With a wave of his hand, small fires burst into existence all along the clothes of the corpses.
"How will we breathe when the smoke gets going, I wonder?"

"Pass it back, we will light it! Retreat to the door, we we will throw it!", calls the bard in a clear, dwarvish cadence. Then to Janes: "I don't know how long this will burn, but it's going to stink".

Grabbing and pushing his way back, through the corridor, Pogar will get to Khelzhad and hand him the oil flask that Draxim gave him.

Re: Off we go...
[Khelzhad knows all about darkleeches. They are subterranean oozes that move slowly and dissolve whatever they touch. Darkleeches are the physical manifestation of raw Chaos and are widely reviled by any society that encounters them. As far as Khelzhad knows Brae's statement is correct. Darkleeches are affected only by fire.]
[Presumably Atan does not go investigate the altar for secret doors since he would have to leap over fifteen feet of darkleech to reach it.]
The group continues to bunch up in the corridor, with the angry elemental on one side and the encroaching darkleech on the other. The pile of dry garments that Khelzhad procured bursts into flames when Madragar's spell is invoked. Black smoke rises up to the high roof of the gallery.
To the east, the hulking stone creature begins to move toward Janes, eager to smash his skull. Yet, a command from somewhere in the corridor beyond halts its progress.
"Ggrl'ruuk!" the unseen entity shouts, and the elemental stands its ground.
Packed as they are within the gallery chamber, the companions have no where else to run. The darkleech continues its crawling advance, just reaching the threshold, its bubbling surface reaching out for Draxim and Pogar.
The situation, however, soon gets worse. An explosion of rock and dust cascades against Draxim's face as a speeding arrow misses his head by inches and strikes the wall next to him. Through the open doorway to the south, and beyond the door from which the darkleech emerged, Draxim catches a fleeting glimpse of his attacker. The archer is a blur as it ducks back into cover, but the dwarf's darkvision gathers an unsettling description: mail hauberk, recurve bow, and the face of a young human female who would be considered pretty... if the left side of her face weren't entirely lacking flesh.
[We're on combat time. Go.]

Re: Off we go...
[Where is the fire?]
[On the ground next to Khelzhad. -GM]
Ulwe looks to the niche next to him. Has it been raided by Khelzhad or are there corpses with shrouds there as well?
Are enchanted weapons immune to ordinary fire?
[There are plenty more burial robes, at least a dozen more in easy reach. Enchanted weapons aren't immune, but grant a saving throw bonus against damage. A steel sword isn't going to be bothered by some burning linen. -GM]
