Re: Underground, Part V
Check on the status of things on the balcony -

Is the ballista still usable (and do I know how)? What is in the dead Duergar's pockets? Is there a door that can be secured between the balcony and the corridor?

"Hmm. Giant crossbow. We need Ruglan here to handle this thing for us."

Re: Underground, Part V
The ballista appears undamaged, but Draxim isn't in the least bit experienced on how to use it. The duergar have nothing valuable on them other than their chainmail hauberks and their crossbows. They don't even have rations or water. There is no door between the balcony and the corridor.

Re: Underground, Part V
Janes finds priests talking to be painful to the ears so he moves over to the barricade and to each door or cooridor and takes a listen and a look to see if he can notice anything.

Re: Underground, Part V
Janes hops up on top of the barricade and inspects the door. The iconography appears very much devoted to birds in flight. Birds of prey to be exact. Yet one device stands out: an upraised claw identical to the ones in the lower chambers that were combination locks to secret areas of the complex.

Listening, Janes hears nothing of interest.

"Salhaug is far more terrible than a dark rune-lord. He is a God of Chaos, foe and antithesis of my lord and patron Orlanth. Though for the most part, what you said is true."

"Sangraal of the Cloth, let us gather up ourselves and when all are are ready, let us try the combination on the claw Janes discovered over on yonder wall."

"Draxim, Pogar! take out that ballistae and climb back down. I believe there is another passage-way here."

"A moment more, I pray you," says Madragar, thoughtfully.

"Gentlemen," says the wizard to Hvari and Waed Daevra, "we have come through much travail, and some things that we thought were, are no more. So forgive me if these questions seem odd."

"What news, sirs, of Old Kurlew? Or of Edrigan the Golden? Lyssa of the Skytower? The Gorgon?"

Re: Underground, Part V

Hvari scratches his chin in contemplation.

"Strange that you should mention them, for it is an old story that only recently drew my attention. It is said that many years ago Lyssa ruled the Rajani elves from their holdfast atop Old Kurlew itself. Yet she fell in love with a human, Edrigan, and perpetrated a crime for which her people have never forgiven her... she taught him the arts of sorcery. Lyssa renounced her sovereignty and soon the lovers fled from the Rajani, disappearing into the west."

"Yet," Hvari continues. "An embassy from Aeryn came to Thasvara not long ago and admonished the Deva not to harbor Lyssa and Edrigan. We paid the Rajani little attention for no wizard had ever been known to the Moagarai. Still the elves believed that the pair were hiding in the Isselwaith, taking apprentices among us humans to spread the knowledge of sorcery. I thought little of their warning... until now."

Hvari looks meaningfully at Madragar.

Re: Underground, Part V
Listening intently to the leaders of the Brotherhood speak Sangraal waits till they finish before indicating to the barricade.

"After this is complete I see many a flagon of ale emptied to wet the throat for there is much to speak of and ponder. What is the symbol you all bear?" he asks pointing to the new livery.

Re: Map Link
Sangraal's comment kills all conversation in the room, and each priest stops whatever it is he's doing to stare at the Dawnbrother.

"It is the sigil of the Church of the Lightbringers." Hvari speaks slowly, clearly suspicious that Sangraal would not know such an obvious piece of information. "It is your church, brother. I had thought your trials after the Cairnhollow, whatever they were, took from you your priestly garb. Yet now I see that you bear a strange symbol about your neck. What is it, brother?"

Re: Underground, Part V
Sangraal realizing a bit to late that an explantion will be needed presents his holy symbol for inspection.

"Its the symbol of the brotherhood of the Dawn. Though i fear there will need to be an explination of some sort. An explanation by the Light, I myself do not fully comprehend."

Re: Map Link
Hvari looks at Sangraal's holy symbol and hands it back.

"I don't understand," Varamon says. "You were raised in the Church, brother. Where is your symbol? You know that fostering sects within the Church is forbidden."

Varamon gets his deadly mace into a more defensive position as he speaks, but Hvari lays a hand on his arm in an attempt to calm him. Hvari is much younger than Varamon, being only a few years older than Sangraal, but seems to carry much more authority in the Church than either of them.

"There is no time for this," Hvari intones, directing his attention to Varamon and the other priests. "They have the blessing of the Deva upon them and we will not question her vision on the eve of this battle."

Varamon remains unsatisfied, and turns his back on Sangraal to go dismantle the barricade.

Re: Underground, Part V
Draxim sets about removing key bits from the ballista so that it will look operational, but fail catastrophically when fired. Listening to the tension filled conversation amongst the preists, he interjects with his usual directness.

"Beggin' yer pardon, if that's the symbol of the Lightbringers, then it's a symbol I'd wear proudly. I devoted my life to Urox, the Storm Bull, and my sword to the cause of defeating Chaos and its evil minions like this Xorn bunch and these Duergar. Just cause you have a different symbol for it then we do, don't matter. It's the same idea. Save the world from the forces of 'ntropy. All this quarreling and mistrust just plays into their hands. Anyway this hall just goes down a bit, should Pogar and I scout it out while we are up here?"

[Conversation hijackers!]

"Obviously there is much to be discussed. Believe me when I say that we are as surprised as you by what seems to the other commonplace. But tell me this, gentlemen, is their no sorcery among the legions? No eldritch Lunar traditions?"

[OOC: Aeryn? Where is that, he asked suspecting he should know the answer?]

[Madragar's never heard of a place called Aeryn. -GM]

Re: Map Link
Hvari grins. "You are a strange one, tatoo'd man. Only the elves know sorcery and they do not teach it to anyone but their own kind. That is unless this rumor of your Edrigan is true. In any case, the Lunar cult vanished a century ago."

Re: Map Link
Ulwe warily eyes the other priests upon hearing that in this time, individual cults are forbidden. However, sensing the urgency of the situation and seeing the burly mace-armed Varamon, Ulwe thinks better of debate and holds his tongue.

"Dwarven friends, let others worry about yon corridor. Time is like a minnow!"

Ulwe stands by the talon shaped depression waiting for the party to re-assemble and for the combination to be un-locked.

He gathers his javelins, readies his spear and shield and waits for the party to move on.

While the Dwarves either listen and climb down, or ignore Ulwe and continue exploring the balcony, Ulwe asks a few questions of his own.

"Tell me Priests of the Lightbringers, what do you know of Hralma Ten-herds?"

[ Anyone else want to scream heretic and point at Ulwe and Sangraal? ]

[Factually, the Aerendalen is a cult from the island nation of Shei Hythriad. They're just widespread Orlanthians and aren't strictly prohibited by the Moagaran Church of the Lightbringers. Sangraal, on the other hand... -GM]

Re: Map Link
Hvari is about to speak, but stops and turns to one of the younger acolytes in the room.

"Tuvan?" he asks.

The slender warrior scratches his hair, slick with sweat, and then recites "Hralma was the son of Vras who was the son of Ogdalaan. Vras was the first of the Tenherds and had the blood of Urox in his veins. When the horse clans came to the east Hralma was but a boy, and to his tent the demon Irigaal crept. In a great fire Hralma was consumed, and his ashes blown to the winds. The great shadow fled, pursued by Aiasarra and the Swordmaidens of Humakt, up the Nral river and into the wilderness."

Tuvan takes a deep breath and continues.

"A great battle they fought in the river and on the mountain sides. All the Swordmaidens were slain by Irigaal's fiery mace. All but Aiasarra. Yet even she was cast down into the Nral and would have drowned. But Urox was enraged at the murder of his blood child. The Storm Bull pleaded and threatened and did all in his power to compel Humakt to come to the aid of his priestess so that Hralma could be avenged. This he did, and Aiasarra arose as the first Runelord of the Moagari. With the Storm Bull's hammer Humakt broke a sliver of iron from his sword, which was called Death. This Godsiron he gave to Aiasarra and with it she shattered Irigaal's mortal form. His fiery mace fell into the Nral and for ten years the river burned until at last it quenched the demon's flame."

With a great heave the last few stones of the barricade tumble aside, a pair of sweating priests leveraging the rocks with long timbers.

"Though I have many questions, Master Ulwe speaks wisdom. We must not tarry."

Madragar sets himself to follow the warriors into the breach.

Re: Map Link
With a quick roll of his fingers, Ulwe taps out the eleven part combination of the claw lock. With a gentle push the door pivots on its center point. A gasp of air and dust billows outward as the atmosphere of the long sealed chamber equalizes.

Holding out his flail which still glows with Yelm's light, Sangraal takes a step into the room beyond the door. It is a long hall, some forty feet wide and sixty long with a heavy stone door on the north wall. Lines of weapon racks are visible on both sides of the chamber, and running along the center of it as well. The racks, however, are empty and a fine layer of dust lays over everything.

Atan takes a quick inspection of the floor and finds no tracks in the dust.
