Re: Map Link
[Sorry... But was the 'secret door' behind the barrier? ]
[Yea, I botched the initial description. The priests were supposed to be looking for a room with two doors, but couldn't locate it because the northern door in this room was hidden. The duergar found the secret door but, being unable to open the claw lock, barricaded it. The PCs were then going to say "hey, there's a door right here. Chamber of the Falcons... two doors... let's go." But, like I said, botched. -GM]

Re: Map Link
[ Cool. I just wanted to make sure this is where we are supposed to go, before a 3 day debate raged about what we should do. ]
"Sangraal Ironskin, you should take the lead." Says Ulwe with a slight grin. As the others file into the corridor, Ulwe invokes Orlanth's illumination and uses his spear as a beacon.
[ Marching order? Sangraal, Draxim,
Ulwe , Pogar
Madragar, Atan
Janes , Khelzhad ]

Draxim climbs down and takes his place in the lineup.
"Hralma..." he mutters under his breath. He then shakes his head vigorously to clear the reality disjunction, and tries to focus on the task at hand - checking the room for traps.

Draxim finds no traps within his immediate area.

Remembering the last return to modern times, Khelzhad wonders if any other messages have been left for them and he quietly asks the wizard:
"Mad, are there new messages in your book?"
Khelzhad loads a crossbow bolt before heading down the corridor.

Madragar raises an eyebrow and unships his pack, bringing it to hang in front of him off his right shoulder while he rummages for the large tome and flips through it.
"Don't call me Mad," he says absently, his mind on any changes to his most precious possession.

Re: Map Link
Madragar first flips to the last page of the book, the one on which has been transcribed the combination for the claw locks.
There he finds a thin strand of thread which actually appears to be from his own tunic. It has been marked at regular intervals by black ink - also probably his own.
Below the instructions for the operation of the claw lock is written:
"Well done, friends. Your courage at the Tooth does credit to your people.
In your absence I have taken some measurements and will see that you are well equiped for the task that awaits you.
In faithful service,
Sekastia"

[ Draxim is muddled. I knew there was no trap there, but Draxim is desperately casting about doing what he can and keeping busy to keep his brain from exploding. ]
"You don't suppose she's made us ... well that would be ... Bless Me!"
Draxim now begins searching the armory room for secret doors as well. Failing to find any, he will listen at the north door, check for traps, and try to open it if everything seems safe.
Edit: After retrieving his rope, grappling hook, and pack of course.

Re: Map Link
Atan is the last through the southern door and as he passes by the crowd of priests and warriors he sees a familiar face. With his foot up on one of the barricade stones, an elven acolyte cleans the blood from his blade. Atan stops for a moment in front of him, wondering if his eyes are playing tricks. The grim soldier looks up at him and frowns.
Yimris clearly thinks of Atan as nothing but a stranger.
"What are you looking at Rajani?" Yimris sneers, then stalks away to join his fellows without waiting for an answer.
Atan isn't sure, and with a confused look on his face he joins his companions. Silently the door pivots back to its original position and the armory goes silent.
Draxim begins pacing around the perimeter of the room, looking for secret doors.

The Measure of a Man
"I hope the cause is worth the changes we have wrought, Lady. For us as well as for you."
Madragar closes the book thoughtfully and then peers carefully about him. Though he does not share the idea with his companions, he is looking for something Edrigan described to him long ago - a scrying sensor.

Not again!
One breath away from being denounced Sangraal pledges to Hvari that he will gladly answer any questions as to his faith after they all escape from the island.
Taking his leave Sangraal almost chokes on his own tongue as Yimris stalks by. "No mistaking that ugly elf" he says under his breath.
When Ulwe indicates for him to lead Sangraal gladly takes the front rank.
[OOC: Sangraal is ready and time is of the essence since he has ironskin and daylight up.
P.S I fail to see the humor in having the same person have two different cleric characters declared heretics. Truth be told I do see the humor in it.

Re: The Measure of a Man
Draxim searches the room and, not finding anything besides a lot of dust, goes to the northern door. The portal is made from a single large, unadorned slab of stone. Draxim approaches, looking for an opening mechanism, when quite unexpectedly the door begins to slowly rise up into the ceiling. Draxim is startled but is also drawn to the cunning stonework as several tons of granite is lifted upward by some unseen aparatus. He listens and then turns to his companions and declare "sand! An ancient but effective counterweight."
In less than a minute the slab has vanished into the ceiling leaving only a flat surface that blends perfectly with the surrounding stone.
Sangraal's light spills into the chamber beyond. It is a large room, its walls covered in racks, shelves, and tables - each nearly full of various containers and boxes. In the north east corner of the chamber is a massive furnace and an equally massive anvil. Though the furnace has been cold for centuries, the anvil has clearly seen much use.
In the center of the chamber stands a table with thick iron legs and smooth steel top. Seated on a large wooden bench, with his back to the companions, a dragonewt Warrior lays slumped against the table, its head resting amid a pile of scattered papers.
The thick layer of dust and cobwebs in the room, and on the Warrior, indicates that no one has been in this place for a very long time.
What appears to be another stone door stands on the west wall, while a fifteen foot wide corridor extends to the east.

Ulwe cautiously approaches the Dragon-Newt warrior. Once he is certain the creature is in fact dead, he gathers up the papers and examines them.

Re: The Measure of a Man
The dragonewt is very dead, and has been for a long time. Through the eyes of Sekastia, Ulwe knows the look of a dragonewt Warrior in its prime. This creature, however, appears quite shrunken and old. There are no signs of struggle so it seems likely the dragonewt died of old age.
Clouds of dust rise up from the papers as they are disturbed. For a moment he stares at them with a complete lack of understanding as they are written in a strange and foreign tongue. Inexplicably, however, he begins to comprehend the meaning behind each character and soon gets his mind around the structure of phrases, sentences, and finally the entire document. Ulwe is sure that some part of his experience inside the Noble Sekastia has given him a basic understanding of the dragonewt language.
The elf priest shuffles through the papers. Most of them show simple diagrams and rows of numbers, with small pictures of dwarves, elves, and humans standing in various positions. It doesn't take Ulwe long to figure out that the eight figures represent himself and his companions with notes detailing the measurements of their physiques. Each page also lists each companion's commonly used weapons.
At last Ulwe comes to a bundle of parchment that looks to be a short and simple journal. It too is written in the dragonewt language in long, descending rows.
All has been sealed and I remain with ink and iron.
The eldest Warrior I am, and know the rituals well.
I will forge the runemetal that remains as my King advises.
Zhoskelgar is indeed wise. I will not fail you, my sovereign.
The dark ones shake the roots of the island but cannot reach me.
The spirits of the Dagger linger here, kept from Path.
All is quiet now and the forge is alive.
My life is done, yet I await the next.
Utama
Ulwe notices that a tiny wooden brush still rests in the dragonewt's hand, inches from a small pan of dried ink.

Re: The Measure of a Man
Draxim quells his greed long enough to kneel and say a quick prayer for Sekastia and her minions.
"You honoured yer ancestors 'an yer duty better then anyone ever had a righ' to expect. Urox, if ya happen to see Humakt, maybe you could put in a word for their transcendence? They sure deserve it."
Queue Hanky. Discretely of course.

Re: The Measure of a Man
As Pogar enters the room and see's the dead dragon newt, feeings of his "other soul" Nryl is brought forth. Pogar hangs his head low as the spirit of Nryl sends his prayers to his god, Pogar sends his prayers to all the pantheon of good gods, that he knows of, which is very limited.
Pogar, once he is paid his repsects to the fallen warrior, will move off and look around the room.
[OOC: Pogar should be in the front ranks. I also think that Sangraal would do better in second ranks also.]

Re: The Measure of a Man
[I think Sangraal was in the front, for the moment, because he's used his magic ring. It grants him some serious damage resistance (except against electricity which is pretty much instant death).]
Pogar wanders around the room and marvels at all the fine tools and abundant material. It is like a vision of the perfect smithy he's always had in his mind - minus the keg.

The light in the room seems to glitter as dust becomes unsettled and rises up on the slight wind generated by the parties movements. Sangraal moves over to the shelves and looks over the items stored there.
[OOC: Sangraal checks out the boxes and shelves. ]
