Re: The Measure of a Man
Sangraal finds a wide variety of materials useful in the creation of weapons and armor. There are bags of iron bearings, reagents for making steel, old rolls of leather, thread, wax, various alchemical substances he doesn't recognize, glass beads, silver powder [8 pounds of it], sand, a small chest full of semi-precious stones, rivets, nails, brads, tacks, and on and on.

Re: The Measure of a Man
With the words written on the ancient documents and the materials in the room Sangraal thinks he knows what is happening.
" I remember something about dragonewts taking on differnt forms in thier lifetime, I believe it is possible that that dragonewt Warrior" he points to the stiff dust covered corpse "is not dead but waiting to transcend to his next phase of life but its only a theory. A weak one at that I admit."
"Though if the warrior was to transend to the rank of noble, which would seem to bolster my theory, for the nobles are the spokesman and treaty makers of the Dragonewts then if as the clues point, we would be fitted for a final battle."
[*cough* You've already met a dragonewt Noble named Utama. -GM]

Re: The Measure of a Man
Draxim begins helping Sangraal invetigate the contents of the room by looking at the racks.
"Could this be the same Utama that helped us fight Irigaal?" he whispers to Sangraal. "But I guess in this new world Irigaal was killed long ago from what they say."

Re: The Measure of a Man
Ulwe eyes the silver powder as well as the semi-precious stones. "The silver powder may come in handy." He absently says to nobody in particular.
"I believe this warrior has passed on. I do not think the transcendence from warrior to noble occurs in the same body. I believe their soul inhabits a new form and they are born anew. At any rate, this Utama has waited a long time for us."
Ulwe says a silent prayer for the old husk of a dragon-newt.
The avaricious sea-elf resists the temptation to take the semi-precious stones but does take the sack of silver powder. He places the pouch in his pack.
"Let us check the door before we continue onwards. I have a feeling there is some-thing waiting for us, a gift from Sekestia."

Sangraal glances at the door to the west before he moves to the eastern passageway and shines the light down it.

While his esteemed colleagues examine the door, Madragar examines the alchemical substances, being sure to restock any needed material components and to determine whether there is anything of particular importance or rarity.

Re: The Measure of a Man
The door to the west is closed.
Sangraal steps to the opening of the eastern passage and sees, after about ten feet, the corridor opens into a larger chamber. Along the east wall of the room he observes eight vertical columns of soft greyish light. Within each pillar weapons and armor hover in mid-air, the divine illumination from Sangraal's flail catching every shining surface as if each item had been polished and oiled just minutes ago.
The young priest, in fact, gasps at the shining mail and gleaming plates of steel before him. The armor is like nothing he has ever seen before... like statues of living iron.
Madragar takes some time to pick through the alchemical supplies but doesn't find anything so rare or valuabe that he thinks it worth while to stuff it into his pockets.

Ulwe cannot resist once he hears the gasps of awe from Sangraal. He quickly moves into the room and casts detect magic. Then he looks for the suit which he feels has been created for him by the long dead dragon newt warrior in the other room.

Re: The Measure of a Man
Salivating, Ulwe shoulders Sangraal out of the way and rushes into the room. Uttering his prayer, Ulwe's eyes light up with a fiery orange glow.
He discovers that the columns of grey light radiate a weak abjuration.
There are eight suits of armor. Three of them are constructed of an expertly crafted combination of a chainmail hauberk and steel plates, and each radiates a moderate enchantment. The other five pieces of armor appear to be ornate leather jerkins, but with wrist-length sleeves. They also radiate a moderate enchantment.
There are a variety of weapons hovering around each suit of armor as well - bundles of arrows, crossbow bolts, javelins, and throwing axes.
Ulwe figures (correctly) that one of the heavy suits of armor is for him and, bypassing the one stout example that he assumes is for Pogar, and the human sized suit, for Sangraal, and arrives at a taller more slender panoply at one end of the row. The armor shines like the morning sun off a placid lake. Over top of the finely wrought chain hauberk rests a breastplate, an arrow-straight seam running vertically from neck to waist. Segmented pauldrons surmount the cuirass, while slender steel vambraces and greaves wait patiently. Atop all, a bold steel helmet stares down at Ulwe, its surface decorated with subtle spirals and meandering embellishments that seem to speak of the wind and sea.
A bundle of six non-magical javelins hover inches from the armor, but Ulwe reaches past them to grasp a vambrace. As he does, gravity seems to return to it and he is able to pull it out of the column of grey light without resistance. He marvels at the quality of the steel - so far beyond anything he has ever seen - and the shocking lightness of the piece.
[It should be noted that Ulwe doesn't actually have words for the parts of his new armor. He's never seen a proper steel breastplate before, or pauldrons. But I'll be using those words anyway so we all know what we're talking about.]

Awesome!
Ulwe proceeds to remove his very valuable custom made chainmail shirt, and begins putting on the even more valuable, custom made, and enchanted armor which magically floats before him.

Re: The Measure of a Man
Khelzhad follows Sangraal and Ulwe into the chamber and examines what armor may fit the stouter race. Dwarvish greed fires his blood, but the cautions of Master Bard Threyar echo in his mind - no gift is really free, there is always a price. Khelzhad curses the cost and proceeds to the armor.

Re: Awesome!
Khelzhad stands before the five leather coats and sees that no two are alike. Moving quickly to the two dwarf sized garments he finds one that is made of tooled leather, stitched with pale green knotwork and held closed by eight silver buttons. The jacket is in fact very much in the style of what a well-to-do Ghuraskalli would wear being rugged and functional. Even the knotwork appears to be in the Ghuraskalli style, or at least a very good imitation of it.
The bard reaches into the pillar of light and takes hold of the jacket, and is surprised to discover that it is as light as a linen tunic. As he runs his hand across the surface of the garment he feels something hidden within. Through close examination he finds that sandwiched between the leather exterior and cloth interior of the jacket is a layer of impossibly thin and flexible chainmail.
Also within the pillar of light is a leather quiver containing twenty crossbow bolts with white fletchings.

Draxim moves next to the bard and looks at the other suit that looks like it might fit someone that stands about 4 foot 4.
[ It looks like we lost all the posts about Utama and the fight with Irigaal. Could we get a link if I'm wrong, or a quick refresher if I'm right? Thanks ]
Catching Janes attention at some point, Draxim will whisper, " I wonder what of the ladies Chandra and Theony? Do you think there's a chance.... of course they might never have been born bein' scion of Hralma an' all."

Re: Awesome!
Draxim finds his collection of equipment soon enough. The jacket is similar to the one Khelzhad is inspecting, but its leather is the color of old stone. The deep blue-greys of the coat are offset by buttons made of black bone and small squares of opal sewn into the collar.
Draxim also finds a quiver of twenty crossbow bolts.
[The bolts, as well as all of the non-armor equipment accompanying each suit of armor, are masterwork.]

Utama, recap
The party first met Utama in the Cairnhollow during the battle against the Humakti Runelord Kurigalos who had been possessed by the Shadow Urukavas. Utama, invisible and hovering near the ceiling, fed Madragar scrolls during the battle and helped the party kill Kurigalos (and Urukavas with him) as well as the enigmatic Joru.
[From this episode the party learned one of the only ways to permanently kill a Shadow is to trap it and its host in a Magic Circle and surround it with a Dimensional Anchor, then kill the host.]
Utama's full name is Ironhorn Utama Amaranth Unfolding and she explained that the prophecy that led the Emperor Zulquerzarhen to invade Moagara, set up the Fortress of Lead, and secure the fiery mace that contained the last traces of the Shadow Irigaal, was a ruse. Utama, she explained, tricked the Emperor into gathering the necessary ingredients to fulfill the real prophecy which involved the final destruction of Irigaal... a plan Utama had apparently been working on for decades.
Utama and the party returned to the Fortress of Lead and while she worked to fix the strange quasi-Chaos device called the Illuminating Orb, the party did battle with the reanimated Zulquerzarhen. There was much fire and destruction, as well as the return of a massive Shadow-crafted construct called a Cauldron, when finally Utama activated the Illuminating Orb. The explosion vaporized everything in the Fortress, including Irigaal and the party. A split second before the explosion, however, Utama vanished.
Some time later, and one by one, the party began to rematerialize in the empty Fortress. Theony and the refugees were long gone. The party then left the Cairnhollow.

Armorfest
It takes Ulwe several minutes to jettison his old armor in favor of the new. Although not as light as his chain shirt, the priest finds the heavy armor to be surprisingly unencumbering.
[The armor is the equivalent to Half-plate, but has the Max Dex, Armor Check penalty, movement restrictions, and Arcane Spell Failure rating of Chainmail. It also has some kind of enchantment, but it will take an Attune Runemetal from Madragar to figure out what it is.]

Draxim shrugs off his own masterwork chainmail shirt for the leather jerkin in the pillar of light, and adds the bolts to his stash. He will also take the opportunity to go through his pack and inventory and resort etc.

Re: eyes wide open
Sangraal finds no claw locks in the room, but locates his panoply without trouble. The armor is very much like what Ulwe is now wearing, but the inscriptions and embellishments mimic the rays of the sun, and its helm is surmounted by a short white and black crest. Sangraal is a bit disappointed, however, that his trusty spiked gauntlet is incompatible with the new armor.
Draxim shuffles on the leather coat and buttons it up, pleased by how light and flexible it is.
[The coat is the equivalent of a chain shirt, but has no Max Dex, Armor Check, movement, or Arcane Spell Failure penalties. It's also enchanted in some way.]
