Re: If you ever go back in time don't step on a bug.
Suprised to see the diminutive trollkin Sangraal stammers

"Whats going on? Are the dwrves preparing to charge or are they holding still?"

[ Is the daylight spell up now? Which weapon did Madragar cast fire weapon on, crossbow or sword? ]

[Yes.]

[Whichever one Janes held out to be ensorcelled. (i.e., you pick.)]

"By the breath of Yelm," whispers Madragar. "You are right, Sangraal. Much is changed. We must make no assumptions. And we must try to learn the extent of the change. For instance, it would appear that the Empire has not left our shores."

"Of course, there are one or two good points about that," he says, standing and casting a dancing lights spell and directing it towards the duergar. "Fewer reasons to hide the nature of power."

"What are you doing here Mulgi?" Asks Ulwe, surprised at seeing the trollkin.

Re: If you ever go back in time don't step on a bug.
Hearing that Galewing is missing, Draxim is inclined to take a full inventory, but knows it must wait. He unlimbers his beautifully crafted crossbow, and loads it, then makes sure of his armor and sword, in preparation for the coming battle.

"How far off are those ballistic thingys? Can we get 'em burnin'?"

He produces a flask of oil and demonstratively sloshes it around with a smile for little Mulgi who he always liked.

"By Urox, what are you legion boys doing down here anyway?" Draxim thinks this question might be generic enough to not give anything away, but still get some information.

Re: If you ever go back in time don't step on a bug.
Janes holds out his crossbow to be enchanted, or his quiver, whichever would work. Then squints down the hall to see if he can draw a beed on a nasty little scum sucking Druegar.

Re: If you ever go back in time don't step on a bug.
[Only Sangraal actually said he went up to the chamber to speak to Mulgi. Oh well.]

The companions gather at the doorway where a sea of corpses lays between them and the trollkin. Madragar sends a quartet of shimmering lights down the western corridor but from his position he can't see any duergar. Logically, seeing the enemy puts one in a position to be shot by them.

Mulgi makes a quick step backward as a thunderous blast echoes down the western corridor followed by a clash of steel. A chorus of shouts is mixed in with the sounds of battle, some of it Moagaran, some of it the bizarre and disturbing chants of sorcery.

"I am here in services to the Queen," the trollkin declares proudly. "But there is no time, friends. We have the Xorn runnings, and as the Sekastians say all have removed their gloves. The battle priests are ahead," the trollkin gestures toward the western corridor with his shortsword. "But we cannot get by."

Re: If you ever go back in time don't step on a bug.
Still a bit confused as to where he is, who he is and what is going on, Pogar see's the trollkin and the leigionares backed in the corner.

Pogar, steps forward, passing off his firy sword to the nearest person that would be able to hold the great sword. Grabbing the heavy crossbow, Pogar stands in line with the corridore and looks to see if he has a clear shot. Pogar will also try to see what the lines look like.

[Conditional orders.
IF no clear shot, Pogar will walk back to the group, drop the crossbow and leave it. Will also take back his sword

IF there is a clear shot, Pogar will shoot.]

Re: If you ever go back in time don't step on a bug.
Pogar steps out into the corridor and a split second later a streak of black plunges down from the upper reaches of the western corridor and strikes him in the hip. The ballista bolt sends Pogar flying head over heels through the piles of corpses. His crossbow spins into a dark corner of the chamber and he comes to rest some fifteen feet from where he started. The dwarf, however, is still moving.

The trajectory of the missile seems to indicate that the duergar siege engine has been placed near the ceiling in the western corridor. Perhaps they are on a balcony.

Pogar, reeling in pain, will look up into the corridor and see if he can see where the ballista is located.

[He can, but he has other things on his mind at the moment, like which end is up, and what is name is. -GM]

Re: If you ever go back in time don't step on a bug.
With an angry shout, Madragar invokes a brief shimmer of light around himself, then steps into the corridor, looking for the ballista.

Re: If you ever go back in time don't step on a bug.
Madragar steps over the body of a decapitated Ilbog and stands in full view of the enemy down the corridor. Two missiles streak toward him, one passing well over his head, and the other slamming into his thigh. There is a loud snap and a burst of white light in front of the wizard and the crossbow bolt bounces harmlessly to the ground.

Madragar sees about eighty feet of corridor that empties into a larger chamber in which numerous armored figures run here and there, locked in mortal combat. Just before the opening of the far chamber is a stone archway surmounted by a balcony. From this open platform a handful of duergar can be seen furiously reloading their weapons, including one deadly ballista.

The duergar are about fifteen feet from the ground, and there is no obvious way up to the balcony from the corridor.

After seeing the volley of missiles fall amongst the companions, Mulgi hollers some troll battle cry and runs down the corridor as fast as his trollkin legs can carry him.

Re: If you ever go back in time don't step on a bug.
Janes screams out, "Run for it. If we can get under the balcony before they reload we should be safe."

[ From looking at the map I don't know that he can slip through everyone to run down the corridor, but as soon as he can he's going to run until he's under the balcony. ]

"Don't get too close to that balcony," warns Madragar as his teammates stream past. "Under it might be a bad place to stand in a moment or two."

[OOC: In case Halle is boat bound, which I know he is...]

The nimble elf picks out of the din of battle Madragars voice

"Reloading..."

Moving quickly he smoothly knocks an arrow moves forward and begins to pepper the ballasta loaders.

[OOC: move 2 NW, 3 W targeting ballasta loaders: Short Composite Bow: +8 to hit, 1d6+2 + flame weapon damage, critical x3

Note: Can not find any reference to Flame Weapon in the spell list of the online System guide. What is it and what does it do? How long does it last?

[Flame/Frost Weapon isn't in the SRD. It's from Relics and Rituals.]

[It grants +1d6 damage (fire or frost, at the caster's option) to a weapon for 10 rds./caster level (fifty rounds or five minutes, in this case).]

New plan: Charge!
Khelzhad holds his quiver of bolts forward for Madragar to "bless", and curses his cousin's impetuosity on his way to the front:

"Zhollocks, Stonecrusher!"

Re: New plan: Charge!
Janes takes off and is soon bounding across the field of corpses with a loaded crossbow in his hands. Ulwe runs along with him and the two edge left, using the corner of the door frame as cover before the last desperate sprint down the corridor. Draxim and Khelzhad are right behind them.

Atan casually steps out into the center of the chamber and sends a flaming arrow down the passage. One of the ballista loaders howls in agony as the missile plunges into his arm [#2]. Abandoning his task the duergar staggers backward and tries to extinguish the sorcerous flames.

His comrade barely has time to react to the sudden attack when the dwarf topples forward, rolls off the front of the ballista and falls twenty feet to the hard stone floor below - a victim of Sangraal's magic. The duergar lands on his neck with a sickening thunk, his legs twisting in odd directions, before sagging to the ground unconscious.

The remaining duergar on the balcony finish reloading their crossbows.

Beyond the balcony more of the distant chamber comes into view. A number of humans in armor are engaged in a brutal melee with a numerically superior force of duergar in bright red armor. Several humans behind the line hold their hands aloft and can be heard uttering resonant chants and prayers to the Lightbringers. The duergar have their own priests as well, and streaks of dark necromantic energy flash from their hands, and spiral outward in a purple miasma from their glowing lanterns.

[Map updated. Go.]
