Re: Broiled in Butter
[Madragar is not beyond the steel door. Here's where everyone is at the moment, except Atan and Janes have moved north to the door. Farther north, beyond the door, is where the rasping sound is coming from.

Atan can barely hear the breathing so he can't tell if it's someone sleeping or what. Your torches and light spells shed light in a 20' radius, so 40' for the elves.]

Re: Broiled in Butter
"Keep your voice down." Ulwe replies to Janes. "A breif reconnoiter will give us some knowledge as to what is on the other side of this door. Wasting our efforts banging it down further is fruitless since we can slip through the gap. Draxim is our best scout in this darkness, as he can see with no light and is a stealthy fellow when he leaves that massive pack behind."

Re: Broiled in Butter
Janes turns his look of surprise into disgust and whispers fiercly, "If you are so confident that sneaking in is the best bet, then you lead the way. I can't imagine that anything beyond that door is asleep and unaware that we are out here, or did you not hear Sangraal creaking down the cooridor. I say you send my friend into a trap for no good reason."

Famous last...
"I won't be wantin' this pack regardless Janes, don't worry lad there's only one breather. How bad could it be? " he quietly reassures the keen-hearing human from long ago.

Draxim shrugs off his pack hands off his torch, quietly (?) works his way past the burnt stalk bulb thing, and peeks through the door, crossbow loaded, ready to duck back out of sight.

Re: Famous last...
Ulwe looks past Janes and speaks to the Dwarven scout.

"Draxim, No orders are given in our company. You are not beholden to any one's plan. Though I do think you are the Comapnions' best bet to recon beyond this door."

Last ride of the red shirt.
Draxim shuffles off his pack and slips through the gap between the mangled door and its thick steel frame. Stepping into the shadows he sees that the ceiling is quite high - some fifty feet or more. The room is full of massive piles of broken, rotting timbers and a variety of other debris: furniture, rugs, and tapestries along with many things that can't be easily identified. It is as if a dozen well-appointed houses were churned up in a storm and dumped into the room from a great height.

Draxim listens and detects the shallow, rhythmic breathing coming from behind what appears to be an almost intact hard-wood floor, though it is cantered up at an odd angle. The dwarf believes the breathing to be of someone sleeping, or unconscious for other reasons. Janes was correct that the companions made a terrible racket approaching the room, so "sleeping" seems unlikely.

The jumble of timber and furniture makes the footing treacherous so Draxim takes extra care as he advances. Coming to the corner of the debris pile he quickly takes a peek around it and sees a human in rags laying face down. The man is breathing, though tenuously, and his knee is twisted at a nausiating angle.

Draxim picks his way back through the debris and reports his findings to the rest of the party.

Re: Last ride of the red shirt.
"I say I go tie him up and we find out who he is. But we should be careful. A ruttin' boar could be hidin' in that room, and we wouldn't know it. Ceptin' your keen ears, Janes."

"And where is the darkleech. That's what I want to know. You don't get a young darkleech like what we saw before without an old one around to spawn it."

He scratches his head "I mean I guess. How do you suppose they...never mind."

If the companions agree, Draxim will sneak in and tie up the prisoner's hands, and gag him such that he cannot cast spells (Madragar has instructed him).

"Eye lad" Whispers Pogar. "But be careful, lad. If'n ye move him, 'e may turn on ye an attack ye. Holler out, ifn that be true an meself'll come ta yer rescue" Pogar continues with a wink to Draxim.

Re: Last ride of the red shirt.
"Be careful if its Druuga." Sangraal makes his best attempt to mimic a growling bear without being to loud. Muffled by his helmet it only comes out sounding like he's choking on a piece of pumpkinbread.

"Of course it's Druuga," says Madragar, moving briskly towards the fallen form. "Who else would be down here?"

"Are we just going to kill him this time? Or do you want to get mangled again?"

Madragar takes one of Khelzad's torches with a short nod.

He kneels over the fallen form and rolls it over.

Ulwe follows the fisherman's son into the debris choked chamber. He keeps a javelin at the ready and moves with the others into the dark room.

Re: Last ride of the red shirt.
Madragar, Draxim, and Ulwe pick their way through the chamber. About twenty five feet from the steel door, and around a pile of mouldering lumber, they find the prone man. Under Madragar's torchlight they see that he is dressed in mud-stained, tattered robes and there are stains of dried blood on his sleeves and collar. His head is hairless, having apparently been badly burned.

As Madragar and Draxim consider the best way to turn him over without bringing a pile of wood down on top of them, Ulwe looks around the chamber. There isn't much to see as the ruin of beams, floor boards, and furniture stands as high as fifteen feet in some places. The walls of the place, however, draw his attention as they are entirely clad in steel. Though now badly rusted, every inch of the chamber, including the floor and ceiling, is lined with sheets of steel bolted together and reinforced with long beams.

Together Draxim and Madragar ease the unconscious stranger over onto his back. The man groans in pain as his ruined leg twists, until Ulwe steps in and moves the broken limb to a more comfortable position.

The stranger is a ghastly wreck. His face is cut and bruised, but beyond that it appears to have been badly burned some time ago. His eyes are empty pits of pus-filled scabs and roasted flesh. Ulwe can tell right away that the man's burns are not life-threatening, but he is badly dehydrated.

The elf priest reaches down for his waterskin but quickly draws his hand away. The container glows with the sickly green aura of a mild poison - Ulwe's prayer over the Atan's wounded leg giving him the vision to detect such things.

Ulwe turns his head from side to side, scanning his companions. Every drop of water they carry is tainted.

"Water," the stranger gasps feebly.

Re: Last ride of the red shirt.
Pogar, while some of his companions are in the room will turn his gaze down the hall. He will move about 10 feet down the hall and look down there, to see if anything or anyone is coming down the hallway.
