Re: 1+1+1 = EVIL!
Khelzhad aims his crossbow at the door with the glowing coin illuminating from the tip. Finger on the trigger, he expects the worst.

"Try giving it a push, cousin. If it was built by the dragonewts then it should swing nicely judging by the craftsmanship we have seen so far."

Draxim, restrains the eagar ghuraskali, and checks the door for more conventional traps, before trying to open it.

Re: Open Sez-a-me
Draxim gives the door one last look and then, cautiously, pushes it open. The slab of granite pivots soundlessly, swinging open to reveal a massive open chamber beyond. Draxim is immediately confronted with a blast of cold, damp air that smells strongly of salt water. It is, in fact, misting in the chamber like a cool autumn morning - though Draxim can look up and see the vaulted stone ceiling some forty feet above him.

The chamber is larger than Draxim's darkvision can reveal and, most importantly to the dwarf, the door is some fifty feet from the floor of the room. Extending due south of the open portal is a long stone walkway. Some twenty feet below the upper walkway is another one running east to west. Draxim can see that this lower walkway leads to an opening in the eastern wall of the chamber.

Finally, about thirty feet below the middle walkway Draxim can just make out the floor, or what he thinks is the floor. After a few seconds of observation he can see that it is in fact water of an unknown depth.

Map.

Re: Open Sez-a-me
Draxim examines the walkway carefully to make sure the stone work has not fatally corroded in the salt envionment. He also looks for the usual tricks and traps. He also listens for any obvious splashing that might indicate imminent death, and then summons Janes and Ulwe to come have a look.

[ Don't forget ye olde +2 for dwarves and stonework. ]

Re: Open Sez-a-me
Draxim sees nothing out of the ordinary with the walkway. It is of the same old but expertly crafted dragonewt masonry with which the rest of the subterranean complex was built. The presence of the salty mist, he believes, is a recent occurance.

Re: Open Sez-a-me
The cool moist air is refreshing to young Khelzhad after the last many hours spent in under the breath of chaos, but his pleasure is soon diminished as he remembers a similar cold mist on another stone walkway over water back in the Cairnhollow:

"Chillerserpents", he cautions, and adds in a whisper: "There are no exits either South or West as we would wish to go, and if we take the lower bridge East we will have to climb down to it. I like it not, but it seems there are few good choices with the end of the world nigh."

[ Does Draxim think that the eastern door could be the one that was blocked with the boulder? ]

[Square, I think you are misreading the map - I believe that we simply cannot see the end of the southern and western paths but someone correct me if I am wrong. ]

"Me thinks we should be headin' forward" Pogar says as he slowly creeps into the room. As he proceeds through the doors, Pogar will look around the walls for anything unusual.

"Let's make sure there is an exit on the other side."

Khelzhad drops his pack and clanking sword belt and volunteers to scout ahead as quietly has he can.

"Oy lad" Pogar says as he holds out his had and grabs Khelzhad.

"We best let one o' the ones better suited fer sneakin about. Either Atan, Draxim er Janes'll be a better lad fer sneakin. Yer about as loud as me when me bellies full o' mead'n me been in the smithy fer days." Pogar chuckles softly in reference to the time he spent 2 days in the smithy in anger beating the hell outta some steel that was uncoperative.

"No offense lad, me thinks it'd be better fer one better at it than ye, dont wanna be food fer a chillserpent, now does ye lad?" He asks with a light hearted slap to the back.

Re: Open Sez-a-me
Khelzhad knows Pogar is very protective of him but proceeds all the same.

"Draxim should not always be the one to bear the danger of scouting. Just come a runnin if I yell", he says with a wink.

With a single bolt loaded in his crossbow, Khelzhad slowly creeps onto the catwalk.

As the dwarves scamper up the stairs Sangraal turns to Madragar.

"Your strength in the arts have grown considerably. I did not think it had much chance of working but I am glad we tried."

Turning to the blind guide he rests his flail upon his oppisite shoulder and extends the other to support Tsai.

"Tsai do you need an arm to lean on?"

[OOC: Sangral silently wills the Dragonnewt armor Protection from Chaos special power to be on. He also offers his arm to guide the blind tsai if he needs it. ]

Watching Khelzhad walk off, Pogar is about to yell at him but lets it slide.

He's his own dwarf, he can handle himself, lad. Yer no his momma Pogar thinks to himself, then mutters under his breath "If'n anythin happens to ya, I'll follow ye mesel' ta Humkat er whate'r gods be taken ya and I'll be mak'n sure ye no ferget that I be comin after ye when its me time" so that he could feel better about Khelzhad going off on his own.

Re: Open Sez-a-me
Leaving his pack behind, Khelzhad slowly moves onto the long stone bridge. He is very mindful of his footing for the constant spray of salty mist in the air makes the cold flagstones slick. Gripping his crossbow, he advances while Pogar and Draxim watch him go.

Khelzhad gets about thirty feet from the door when he stops dead in his tracks and hisses some foul dwarvish curse. Deep within the darkness to the south he spots an immense humanoid shape. For a moment he realizes that with the party's light sources behind him that his silhouette must make a tempting target.

A fraction of a second later a boulder the size of a watermelon flies through the damp air and smashes Khelzhad in the chest. The massive creature roars out its defiance as the missile knocks the bard clean off his feet. He spins wildly out of control and tumbles off the edge of the walkway, falling twenty feet to the lower walkway. Khelzhad lands flat on his back with a terrible crash and does not move.

Pogar and Draxim can barely believe their eyes, the swiftness with which their dear friend was laid low. The giant bounds into the edge of their view and brandishes an immense spear - six inches in diameter and fifteen feet long if it's a foot. The creature itself is a scaly humanoid that stands naked to the waist. Its head is human-like, but the flesh below its jawbone lays out in long undulating gills. It wears on its chest a thick disc of metal in an odd eye-and-spiral design. Neither dwarf recognizes it.

[That was the surprise round. Only Sangraal, Draxim, and Pogar beat the thing's initiative. Map. Go.]

Re: Open Sez-a-me
Seeing Khelzhad fall twenty feet, Pogar yells out "Ye blasted no-beard!", a traditional curse of Pogars, when he is mad but nothing can be done.

As the beast steps forth Pogar is more concerned with Khelzhad than with himself. Pogar rushes forth 10' and grabs a throwing axe while yelling a stream of dwarvish profanity that would make the hardest of dwarves blush.

[Drawing a weapon is a free action for Pogar. What else does he do? -GM]

[He will hold his action. If the beast moves forward or moves like he is going to try to reach a spear out to Khelzhad, Pogar will throw the axe.]
