Re: Good story
This has been an excellent way to pass the evening at work. Fantastic story so far. I really want to read more. Mantar and the mysterious weapon are intriguing. Cenard is definitely a character to watch.

Chapter 6: Thorn
He watched tears stream down her face as she quickly wrote out invitations to all the Safehouse Holds all over Norrath. Several young rogues stood around her, each waiting for Nishva to hand them a letter and specify a destination; appropriate wizards had been hired and were standing outside on the docks waiting to teleport each messanger to the needed place. The room was filled with life now, such a difference to the earlier muffled feel. News of the Peace Flame's executions had traveled fast and many rogues were greatly unnerved by it. Dran looked around the room as he had several times. He saw young and old staring into the distance lost in thought. Others constantly gripped their fine blades as if reminding themselves they were still there. There were others who stood sharpening their swords and daggers. Still others reacted much like Nishva had in cold fury, some had tears and others had a fire of death in their eyes.

Dran shook his head to clear his thoughts. The Guardian Medallian clinked against his armor. All this had happened so fast. Dozens of Rogues..."sucked" into a strange container at Kelethin, the disappearence of the three other rogues who had escaped with them, the medallian, the death of Mantar, and now the Peace Flame. He felt a hand touch his shoulder and turned to see the understanding face of Brontiger, his dearest friend.

"Don' ye be thinking about it too much now lad. Ye've got enough on yer plate te be worry'in bout the damned Peace Flame, Nishva be quiet capable of handling that situation at the moment. Ye need to be finding the Raven's Eye. Perhaps in doing that ye will b' able te help out Nishva as well." Brontiger finished with a nod of his head, knowing Dran would see the wisdom in such a course. For, if the leader and greatest of all the rouges could not help the Safehouse, who could?

"Your right dwarf, we need to find Thorn. Hopefully he will be able to tell us where the Raven's Eye is. No one else seems to know." Dran inhaled slowly, then, just as slow, exhaled trying not to get frustrated.

"I think we should wait for Thorn here, all of the other rogues around seem to be migrating here," Rin said suddenly. Dran and Bront looked at the ussually quiet elf. They had almost forgotten he was with them.

"Makes plenty o' sense to meself lad," Bront agreed. "Every oth'r rogue within this are be coming to the Hold in hopes of answers."

Dran nodded his head. "Alright, I guess we wait here then. Ill go out to the docks and wait for him there. You two see if you can help Nishva out. But if not, I suppose do what rogues do best, stay out of the way." With that Dran turned and walked out without looking back. As he moved away his armor seemed to blend into the shadows of the place.

"Me friend be changing I am thinking," Brontiger said to himself quietly. "He's becoming a leader." With a grin he turned to see if Nishva might need a hand with the letters. Seeing as how she had nearly a half dozen other rogues circling her, Brontiger turned back to Rin and motioned to a nearby table. They sat down and quietly watched the commotion around them.

Each could feel the maelstorm about to explode around them. But for some reason Bront didn't think it focused around the leadership of Nishva. He turned and looked to the door his friend had walked out of. With a prayer to Bristlebain to watch over Dran, he turned back to Rin and pulled out a box of dice.

*                *                *                *                *

It was nearly past midday. The sun was bright and the reflection off of the waters of the Ocean of Tears only made it seem brighter. Dran sighed and leaned against the small inn that resided above the Safehouse Hold. There was no wind, everything seemed dead after the mornings activities. He swore he could still smell the burning pyre of his fallen peers. Shivering for no apparent reason, Dran shook his head and looked across the docks.

A group of about half a dozen wizards stood along the docks waiting to teleport messangers about Norrath. They all wore robes to a person, though all varied greatly. Some held small wands in their hands while one carried a large staff with a glowing crystal on the top. Every so often a rogue would come out from under the docks and approach one of the wizards. They would talk breifly then the wizard would begin muttering arcane words. After a great show of waving his arms and reaching a cresendo with his voice, a great magical "hole" would open up around the pair. Then, with a loud boom that sounded much like thunder, both wizard and rogue would disappear as if they had never been there.

Seeing the wizards only made Dran think more on Reave and the events earlier. It was so strange having two factions coming against the Safe-House at the same time. It couldnt be a coincidence and Dran knew it. The only thing was, who was playing the middle man between the two factions. Obviously, the Peace Flame hated rogues more than anything in the world or Reave was a damn good actor. For some reason, Dran was positive that the Peace Flame truly meant what it said. So if the Peace Flame hated rogues, how was the new society manipulating them? Possibly the Peace Flame did not know that it was serving the purposes of another rogue society in its attack against the Safe-House. If the middle man could be found, a line could be drawn to the new society possibly...

Dran sighed, what was he doing? He needed to figure out his own problems before he threw himself into the politics and battle for the Safe-House. He needed to find Thorn so he could figure out what this damned medallion was.

"You dont make a very good look out you know," a peppy voice said below him. Dran looked down to see a short halfling with black hair looking up at him. "Ha, I came inside and saw Brontiger. He asked if I had talked to you and I didnt even know you were here. Your gonna hear about it from him later old friend."

Dran couldn't help but smile. "You runt! You snuck past me just to prove you could didn't you!" With that Dran squated down to hug the diminutive rogue.

"Get off me you tall lug! Your making a scene!" After pushing away the grinning half elf, Thorn made a point of straightening out his clothes and dusting himself off. Then with an attempt at a baleful glare (one that only made Dran snicker) he said, "so what do ye need me for Dran? Brontiger mentioned that you got yourself into some trouble back in Kelethin and needed some information. Ill go cheap this time, since it seems like your in dire straights." He winked at his friend and Dran knew he wouldn't accept a copper even if Dran insisted.

"Well, heres the story..." Dran began to relate everything that had happened since Kelethin. Thorn listened attentively, and as Dran expected, none of it was news to the well informed halfling. Well, nothing suprised him except the medallion he pulled out to show him.

"Damn boy! A Guardian Medallion! Wow, thats big stuff you know? Well, I dont know much about them actually...no one does it seems, and trust me, I've asked around after I had been told about them by Nishva. So what does it do?" The curious hafling leaned closer and Dran had to squat down to let Thorn look closer.

"Well, to tell you the truth I have no idea. Thats where I was hoping you would help me out." Thorn gave him a inquisitive glance and Dran continued, "I need you to tell me where the Raven's Eye is."

Thorn looked up at Dran and smiled. "Well good friend, you've come to the right man for that. But, to meet with the Raven's Eye you must be announced beforehand. Give me twenty four hours to set you up a meeting and you'll be set."

"Thorn, where you lacked in height you always made up in helpfulness. Thank you friend. Meet back here tomarrow midday?" Dran said.

Thorn nodded. Then with a wink he twirled around walking briskly away from Dran. The half-elf rogue watched him go with a smile. Maybe he would figure out his problems after all.
