Beddo Unregistered User (grommet) (7/20/02 11:04 pm ) 203.80.162.11 Reply | Edit | Del KZN185 towing capacity -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My 185 Tare weight is 1880 & GVM is 2520. Towing capacioty was mentioned earlier in discussion on the old site - though I believe you can tow 80% of your Tare weight - check with RTA. Hope this is helpful. My local Toyota dealer looked it up on the Jap Toyota web site. All very nice except nobody can show me where any regulatory body also agrees with this or would also approve an increase in both applicable weights if appropriate engineering were to take place ie an authorised upgrade of suspension and the like. I do know for a fact that the Aussie spec Prados towing capacity is 2500kg (braked) with a max ball weight of 250kg so I am assuming (and have been told) that the same applies for the 185 which has the same chassis and running gear as the Prado. But just to be safe don't overtow your car. Just thought of something else. The max towing weight for a hilux is 1800kg. This includes twincabs, petrol, turbo diesel etc.. Maybe the caravan salesmen are thinking along the lines of the earlier 4runner type surfs. This may be a technical point but your surf doesn't appear to be a 185. According to my sources the older 4runner type surfs have a tow rating of 1800kg whereas the prado based 185 is 2500. The 185 weighs more than the 130. There is also a difference between a H/D reciever type hitch and a normal duty hitch. This more than adequately caters for my current interest in caravans. (approx 1,300 to 1,700 kgs ie upto 15' pop top in a double bed setup) with an additional laden weight of 300 kgs bringing it up to 2,000 kgs max. I guess that I just need to be sensible in choice and how it is packed. Shane
