finally the political topic we agree upon!
Hefty fines for spyware makers and distributors.

Frankly, I think the real ass pirate in all this is... Microsoft. Yes, Microsoft. Here is why.

Let's say Gator tries to install something via activex or whatever. You often get this message saying do you want to install blah blah blah. Yes, No... and a checkbox saying, Always trust content from Blahblah.com.

Why is there no "Never trust content" box? I mean, is it really OK that if i get, say, 800 Gator requests a day, I have to say no to each and every single one of them?

Well, anyways

I think we won't see this in effect until spring of '06...but it is a giant leap in the sense that Congress adknowledges the fact that the internet is a very vulnerable place, where consumers and citizens are at great risk.

I'm glad that they finally are passing laws that cover personal computers from malicious companies like gator, bargain buddy and all that crap.

I constantly check my computer once a day, and I'm constantly finding 67+ instances of infected materials. Those NavBars and Search Assistants that have auto-regenerating registry entries are a pita to fix, because you have to rid them while disconnected from the internet, in safe mode at the same time.

You end the process (if it's running) delete the registry entries, run hijackthis, run adaware, fix the problems, check the registry again...then finally delete the folders that the software was contained in...the majority of it in temp folders, or sometimes even in your windows directory hidden amongst a ton of other things.

Anyway, I'm very happy that congress is taking an initiative to protect us in the cyber world.

the 1 is a republican, Ron Paul. He's not so much for spyware as he is against any kind of government spending at all for virtually any reason and will always vote against it - he's a strict Constitutionalist. He is from Texas, just like Nanelien and Zubov.

Maybe it's just me but I have at least a little respect for a man who knows what he believes in, and stands up for it no matter what the pressure, no matter how many people tell him he is wrong, foolish, or how many thousands of emails he will get advising him that a vice-admiral in Nigeria has funds that he needs to get out of the country and is willing to pay him a small banking fee for his assistance with such.

You might be able to configure your browser to do this by adding the domain for Gator into your restricted sites list. The mixed domain stuff can be kindof tricky, however (the domain of the control is unlikely to be the same as the domain of the page referencing it). Also, the bad guys could try to get around that by constantly changing domains and whatnot. In general, I only ever use the Internet and trusted sites zones. Keep everything that's potentially dangerous (like scripting and ActiveX controls) set to disabled in Internet, and only add domains into trusted sites when necessary. You could also try using a different browser with different options available. Personally I like IE, but there are other choices for available for web browsing. And I'd recommend using windows update to apply the latest service packs for the OS and IE. I have been pretty impressed with the last one for XP; a lot of the personal firewall features you used to have to buy are now built into the OS, and the alerts are much more descriptive. Like after applying it I found that every time I launch Warcraft III the program attempts to contact Blizzard. Very sneaky. Of course, the smart bad guys will just always make sure their stuff goes out over http, cause who's going to block that? Anyhoo, as per always, it's a constant battle, just have to do the best you can.
