Joy Enriquez On The Rise
Written by Glenn*

"Joy's album is definitely worth picking up!".

With today's teens searching for the ideal pop star to look up to and the new faces that show up almost at a fast rate, it's hard to distinguish who's who in the music world. Ask Joy what separates her from the other teen acts and she might tell you "I want people to buy my album because they feel my music, my sincerity, and me as a person". It's true, since miss Enriquez isn't your average "pop" star rather she's in it for much more .... she has family members to inspire!

Upon listening to the cd, I must say that Joy Enriquez is on her way to becoming a star! Along with the urban contemporary beats, it offers a vast array of ballads such as "without you", which in my opinion is the best song on the entire album. Her vocal range is deceptive in some tracks yet if you are the type of listener who enjoys a quality performer, then it might peek your interest. To me, she sounds like Jennifer Lopez in some of the songs but at the same time, the difference is Joy has more of a stronger range than miss Lopez ( I know since I have both albums from Jenn). She also has the tendency to mix up her voice to fit the mood of the music. "Shake Up The Party" is a salsa/merenge type of song so you will hear that latin voice at its best. Whereas in "Situation", you get the much deeply r&b one like only LaFace can provide. Despite the comparisons to other artists, Joy needs to make a song where people will say "that is joy enriquez" and on the album, I've yet to find that song.

From a musical stand point, the whole concept revolves around that of a typical r&b best seller. Producers like Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Rodney Jerkins, and Soul Shock & Carlin lend their crafty magic to match Joy's vibe. A couple of songs are on the pop side such as "tell me how you feel" but overall it sways away from the teenage wonder years cliche. That is, it has deep and meaningful lyrics on some of the tracks. "How Can I Not Love You" is a prime example because it is a testament to her beautiful voice. This song is the first exposure that Joy got from the world and quite frankly, it's not a bad thing since everyone seems to enjoy a slow ballad every now and then right?

Not all of it is just about love though. In a song called "Just When I Needed You", she briefly explains that "This is my personal favorite out of all of the songs I've done. I get to make a song where I thank God for all his blessings and all the success I've had up to this point in my life". It definitely signifies her gospel roots as the song delivers the rich vocal ensemble. This would've made a great closer to me since it has the complete feel of a "last song" type to it, and the fact that BMG decided differently is beyond me. I just have to point out that I didn't agree with the track listings but other than that, it's still a good compliation of songs.

The best part about Joy's music is there is no age requirement. What I mean is a teen could enjoy it as much as an adult in their mid 30's. It was made for a purpose according to her as she states : "I want to make music that lifts you up. I want to be an inspiration!". With that said, I believe anyone who likes uplifting songs and isn't too afraid to admit it, you will like what you hear. From fast, uptempo songs such as "Between Me And You", Joy will make you dance but there is also a message in the process as she talks about a relationship on the brink of extinction. Then, there are songs like "I Can't Believe" where Joy tells the love of her life (or soon to be that is) that he is everything to her. A lot of us can relate to songs like these because love is an everyday part of life. Yet, if you don't like that sort of thing, you probably won't enjoy any of the tracks since 7 of the 12 on it are about the subject.

With a new single on the horizon and a couple of magazine pictures, this will be another chapter in her career. A record that displays her music about the triumphs of love, the betrayal of a lover, and yes, the ever loving party song "shake up the party", look for this album to not only open some eyes but to also get people to realize how there can be so much "joy" in the music world once again. So then, I conclude with some final thoughts.

LaFace has a new songbird and one with the crystalline pipes that will shatter doubts about her talent. Joy Enriquez is geniunely good from start to finish but I look foward to her collaborating with other artists to make her presence really felt. After winning star search 11 times, it's no wonder why she will be a crowd favorite in the future ahead. All I can say is that I think I've found my new favorite female vocalist. Yes, I did say "vocalist" and not "singer", there is a difference. A vocalist has range in songs they sing whereas a singer is limited to only a few chords. It doesn't take much to grab my attention with music but after completely reviewing the cd, it quickly made me realize that Joy's album is definitely worth picking up!
